College football is all about being appealing to a 17-18 year old male. I'm not overly fond of the uniforms, but I think they strike a fairly nice balance between looking "cool" and futuristic and still retaining a lot of classic qualities to them.

We don't paint wings on our shoulders like Murf might. [;)]

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Football (1/21/2012 9:00:13 AM)

Biggest difference seems to be that they took out the piping and lightened up the "gold" (yellow).

Meh.

I like the helmets though.

They look better on here ....

panndder -> RE: Gopher Football (1/26/2012 6:31:49 PM)

Andre McDonald is a Gopher.

That's a nice get for kill and co.
Kid can play.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (1/27/2012 11:46:30 PM)

Kill has nailed down 3 of the top 4 in state recruits Usually we are lucky to get 1 out of the top 6.

Who escaped and where will he go? I know someone went to Stanford but not sure if that is who you are referring to, but that school offered so much in education you have to understand that move

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (1/28/2012 3:53:55 PM)

The offensive lineman that moved here from North Carolina and played for Eden Prairie. I can't remember his name, but he is the one who committed to Stanford.

Isn't that one of the Vikings coaches kid?

Karl H -> RE: Gopher Football (1/28/2012 4:34:27 PM)

A consensus top 10 or so of MN high school recruits looks something like this (in alphabetical order):

N. Davidson (OG) - Stanford
A. Hayes (OC) - MN
J. Harden (DT) - Western Michigan
W. Johnson (TE) - West Virginia
M. Leidner (QB) - MN
A. McDonald (WR) - MN
P. Nelson (QB) - MN
J. Pirsig (OT) - MN
M. Rallis (S) - MN
C. Webb (CB) - undecided
M. Williams (TE) - MN

- Davidson only played here his senior year so a lot of folks don't even count him.
- Johnson did get away..... to West Virginia? Seems a bit strange but it's his call.
- Harden would very likely switch his commit if we decided to offer him.
- Webb is rumored to have academic issues. We didn't even offer to my knowledge.

IMO Johnson is the only guy we really missed out on; however, signing day is only a few days so lets see what happens!

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (1/28/2012 6:51:15 PM)

Check that kids criminal record.  Especially with party related crimes.  WVU is notorious as a party school [&:].  Might be how they snagged him.

Jim Frenette -> RE: Gopher Football (1/29/2012 5:02:44 PM)

Kill says Moses Alipate will move to TE this year. With him getting bigger, probably good move. Good article in paper today of the Minn kids staying home featuring Pirseg and Hayes

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (2/1/2012 2:43:55 PM)

National signing day
And we're still ranked near the bottom of a conference thats poorly ranked for its overall recruiting.
[:@]

Got some good kids, but we need a lot more good ones.
The rich got richer today, unfortunately.
Blue-chippers really only go to a couple places anymore, it seems.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (2/1/2012 4:30:56 PM)

The star ratings are worthless. Wisconsin wound up towards the bottom like they always do. Somehow they just keep winning. The star system does not measure work ethic, desire or heart. It also doesn't take the level of coaching the kid received into account. Erci Decker the number 1 receiver for an NFL playoff team was a 1 star recruit at the U.

I was looking at MaxPreps and the 'elite'/top 200 players. Gophs got 3

And that's only less than Wisconsin/Michigan/Ohio State in the Big Ten.

Baby steps (on top of lowered expectations).

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (2/2/2012 9:14:53 AM)

Funny story on Kill taking his wife along on recruiting trips as an assistant.
They both need some time apart now ... [:D]

Dave E -> RE: Gopher Football (2/2/2012 9:38:28 AM)

Rivals rankings don't concern me. Brewster had a couple sweet recruiting classes, yet we managed to come out with no talent.

Good to see most of the in state talent staying home. That's a start.

They did start 7-1 with a bunch of Juco guys. They had talent for a while, but switched schemes too much.

The lemon a used car salesman suckers you into starts out humming like a champ sometimes.  In the end, it's always still a lemon :)

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (2/5/2012 6:13:09 PM)

gophers class of 2012
Here are the 29 Gophers players who are expected to make up the incoming class of 2012.

OFFENSE
Duke Anyanwu, ATH, Blaine, 6-4, 225: Late commit adds athleticism to class.

Isaac Fruechte, WR, Rochester (Minn.) Community and Technical College, 6-3, 210: Has three years of eligibility left.

James Gillum, RB, Gulf Coast (Miss.) Community College, 6-0, 200: Could be an immediate contributor at position of need.

Jamel Harbison, WR, Mallard Creek (N.C.), 6-0, 191: Gophers beat out Vanderbilt, others for him.

Isaac Hayes, OL, St. Thomas Academy, 6-3, 270: Could wind up playing center with his frame.

Ben Lauer, OL, Wayzata, 6-7, 270: Another late commit adds to Jerry Kill's in-state haul.

Mitch Leidner, QB, Lakeville South, 6-4, 220: Good size, wowed coaches at camp last summer.

K.J. Maye*, ATH, Mobile (Ala.) Murphy, 5-10, 193: Playmaker who could be slot receiver or RB.

Andre McDonald, WR, Hopkins, 6-3, 200: Physically gifted player who could be a difference-maker.

Philip Nelson, QB, Mankato West, 6-3, 216: Perhaps the top prize of this year's class. Could be QB of the future.

Jonah Pirsig, OL, Blue Earth Area, 6-9, 300: Could eventually hold down a tackle spot for years.

Maxx Williams, TE, Waconia, 6-4, 225: Versatile athlete spent time at quarterback in high school.

Rodrick Williams Jr.*, RB, Lewisville (Texas), 5-11, 220: One of two players from his school to pick Gophers.

DEFENSE
Jeremy Baltazar, DB, Blinn (Texas) Community College, 6-0, 196: Good size for a corner and runs a 4.5 in the 40.

Briean Boddy, DB, Coffeyville (Kan.) Community College, 5-11, 175: Turned himself into D-I player via JUCO season.

Scott Ekpe*, DT, Lewisville (Texas), 6-4, 265: Among handful of early enrollees after December graduation.

Jordan Hinojosa, DT, Miami Central, 6-3, 265: Hard worker. Gophers beat out Michigan State and West Virginia.

Antonio Johnson*, DB, Shaker Heights (Ohio), 6-0, 185: Called Jerry Kill "the ideal coach."

Roland Johnson*, DT, Butler (Kan.) Community College, 6-2, 295: Good-sized DT had offers from Illinois, Colorado State.

Alex Keith, DE, Columbia (Mo.) Hickman, 6-4, 235: Working to add weight to frame.

Jack Lynn, LB, Lake Zurich (Ill.), 6-3, 205: Committed before the start of his senior season.

Dinero Moss, DB, Sunrise (Fla.) Piper, 5-11, 183: Speedy playmaker had offers from Nebraska, Connecticut.

Eric Murray, CB, Milwaukee Riverside University High, 5-11, 173: Attended Gophers camp as WR, but recruited as DB.

Brian Nicholson, LB, Miami Central, 6-1, 221: Might have a chance to contribute early.

Lincoln Plsek*, DE, Waco (Texas) Reicher, 6-3, 235: Offered by Gophers and accepted in December.

Nick Rallis, S, Edina, 6-0, 200: Younger brother of current Gophers linebacker Mike Rallis.

Martez Shabazz, CB, Trinity Valley (Texas) Community College, 5-11, 170: Runs a 4.36 in the 40; decommitted from Baylor.

Yoshoub Timms, DT, Fort Walton Beach (Fla.), 6-2, 265: Late commitment picked Gophers over Syracuse, Southern Miss.

Damarius Travis, DB, Pensacola (Fla.), 6-1, 194: Adds more depth to a position of need.

Karl H -> RE: Gopher Football (2/5/2012 9:41:23 PM)

Not too bad of a class IMO, especially with the in-state kids we were able to keep. The one change I see is that Dinero Moss was a last second switch and did not commit here. Per his tweet on signing day, he is "taking his talents to Iowa"!............................ummm......................but he didn't mean the Hawkeyes.............it's Ellsworth community college IN Iowa. LOL He had a few people scrambling and a lot fooled with that tweet. Maybe we'll see him in a couple of years if things work out.

Also, there were a few preferred walk-on's who should get named as they could have gone elsewhere:
- Cedric Dicke DB 6-3 200 Cannon Falls, Minn./Cannon Falls HS
- Tyler Hartmann DL 6-3 245 Andover, Minn./Andover HS
- Ben Holcomb DB 6-4 200 Germantown, Wis./Germantown HS
- John McKelvey ATH 6-0 190 Hunting Valley, Ohio/University School

I could see most of the 6 JuCo kids getting significant PT right away. Pure speculation on my part but Gillum at RB, Johnson at DT, Boddy & Shabazz at CB and Baltazar at safety could certainly be on the 2 deep. Wouldn't be surprised if one or two of the new WR's were also.....

Last I read we have one offer left. Dunno how or when Kill will use that.

I know there was one kid they were concerned about grades, is that Moss? If so, let him get it taken care of in a Juco and still play

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (2/6/2012 3:39:17 PM)

What was the story with the DL out of New Jersey who committed the Gophers only to have Kill withdraw the offer?

Dave E -> RE: Gopher Football (2/7/2012 1:22:05 PM)

Read yesterday that 18 members of the Patriots were zero, one, or two star recruits coming out of high school.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (2/7/2012 1:27:59 PM)

Well, yeah ..... they suck. (in case you hadn't read the SB re-caps) [:D]
