Good footage today of practice on all the cities stations ...
Good..... because it wasn't accompanied by a screaming jackass spewing propoganda about "Gopher Nation heading to the Rose Bowl"
Thank God those days are ovah.
We have ourselves a football coach ...

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (8/20/2012 10:07:36 AM)

Wiscy ... robbing someone else's recruits, as usual .....   [:D]

Quarterback Danny O'Brien will start Wisconsin's season opener against Northern Iowa, Badgers coach Bret Bielema announced Sunday night via Twitter.

In June, O'Brien transferred to Wisconsin from Maryland, where he made 17 starts the past two seasons and passed for 4,086 yards with 29 touchdowns and 18 interceptions. He graduated from Maryland in May and became eligible immediately at Wisconsin. O'Brien beat out senior Curt Phillips and redshirt freshman Joel Stave for the starting job.
"Both Curt and Joel had great camps as well, we are very fortunate that we have 3 QB's that can play winning football for us," Bielema tweeted.
This will be the second consecutive year Wisconsin will start a graduate transfer at quarterback. Russell Wilson came to the Badgers from NC State and earned first-team All-Big Ten honors in 2011.
O'Brien has two years of eligibility at Wisconsin remaining.

High school quarterbacks are going to quit going to Wisconsin because they see a pattern here.

Some decent camp reports from Gopher FB blogs.
Looks like a whole new set of names we'll need to get familiar with  ...

Big 10 net is previewing teams right now and have already done Gophers. Anyone interested, can find replays of them there.

I saw it Fargo, and thought they did a pretty good job. They seemed to say "night & day difference" between this preseason and last years a few times. From what I remember, some of the new impact/surprise players mentioned were: Gillum at RB, KJ Maye as a 3rd down type RB, Harbison & McDonald at WR, Cochran at rush DE, and Manuel at OLB.

Nine days and counting...

Jim Frenette -> RE: Gopher Football (8/21/2012 7:08:32 PM)

Karl I liked hearing that coaches went to Baylor to talk to them about how they used RGIII to see if they can use Grey in same way

Karl Juhnke -> RE: Gopher Football (8/22/2012 7:59:55 AM)

So much depends on Gray this year. I was satisfied that he showed steady improvement last year, and there's no reason he couldn't take it up another notch this year.

He must be feeling a lot of pressure to really break out. More so than the so-called top QB's. He's generally not placed in that group yet. The anointed ones are simply battling for draft position, maybe a few hundred thousand dollars difference. But a guy like Gray is on the bubble of NFL career or no NFL career. He's on the outside looking in right now, but it is certainly within his reach if he is at the absolute top of his game this year. That must weigh heavily on his mind. He's walking a tightrope.

And it is good that we seem to have a coaching staff willing to be flexible and tailor the offense to the personnel, instead of preaching some sacred system all the time.

thebigo -> RE: Gopher Football (8/22/2012 8:25:16 PM)

yawn, I think I'll wander over to the Lynx thread...

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (8/26/2012 12:55:22 AM)

What a great story.
Love the pics.

Karl Juhnke -> RE: Gopher Football (8/27/2012 8:53:44 AM)

That's what I'm talking about. This is a pivotal year in his life. Hope he can make the most of it.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (8/27/2012 8:57:13 AM)

It's game week!
We need a good start to the season
Give us some hope, boys!

To bad it's a 10 PM start time.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (8/27/2012 11:42:36 AM)

Pffft, days just gettin started at that time, Jimbo!

Karl Juhnke -> RE: Gopher Football (8/27/2012 12:52:22 PM)

I am going to be at the game in Vegas. Heading out on Wednesday.

Weather report for Game day. High of 102 low 82. Which means by game time, 8:00 PM local time, it may be around 90. Great football weather!

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Football (8/27/2012 1:57:29 PM)

You're really taking this season ticket thing seriously Karl. Have fun, and I hope none of the players has a heat stroke.

Karl Juhnke -> RE: Gopher Football (8/27/2012 2:05:28 PM)

I had planned the Vegas trip before I got season tickets. Going with some friends. Actually more a Vegas trip and the football game was just an excuse.

And I'm worried about coach Kill's health more than players. I hope he has this seizure thing under control.

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Football (8/27/2012 3:58:24 PM)

I can't believe I had completely forgotten about Coach Kill's health issues. I too hope that doctors have figured out how to help him manage it.

panndder -> RE: Gopher Football (8/28/2012 7:59:07 AM)

He spent some time away from the team and at the Mayo following that incident, and they made many mentions of hydration. You have to believe that some trainer has instructions this year to force-feed him water, regardless of what is going on in the game. I know Jerry and his wife have made visits to local epilepsy camps speaking about how it's a condition that does not inhibit success or happiness.

Have I mentioned how much I like the guy? [:D]

Karl Juhnke -> RE: Gopher Football (8/28/2012 9:05:41 AM)

Yeah it sounds like after the incident last year, they got it thoroughly checked out, made some changes and took some precautions. Another perk to being a head coach at Minnesota I guess. Between the U of M and Mayo Clinic you'e got access to some of the best health care in the world.

But heat was a factor in his seizure last year. And it's expected to be at least 90 at game time in Vegas. So this will be the first real test.

Karl H -> RE: Gopher Football (8/28/2012 4:26:03 PM)

I’m far from an expert on UNLV but here is my best effort at a quick scouting report…

QB - RFR Sherry has beaten out returning starter Herring for this spot. Sherry was pretty big recruit by UNLV standards and looks to have a good future. He’s making his first college start though. I’ll take Gray. Advantage MN.

RB - Cornett (671) is their speed guy, Bradford (615) is the power & Randle (489) is capable change of pace back at #3. RB is probably UNLV’s best offensive position. Our guys may well end up being at least as good, but they’ll have to prove it first. I'll give UNLV a slight edge.

WR - UNLV lost their top 2 players here and no other returning WR has over 4 catches. MN is rather green at this position also. However, we have several players with starts under their belt and they may well get pushed aside by some newcomers. Advantage MN.

TE - UNLV appears to have lost their top 2 guys from last year and are looking to start a FR. I’ll take Rabe and Goodger. Advantage MN.

OL - UNLV returns all 5 starters from a rather mediocre group which will include 3 Sophs. Team captain Rodgers goes just 6-2 265 at RT. The Gophers will technically start just 2 guys from last year. That’s very misleading however as we will be every bit as good as last year IMO. The numbers favor UNLV but I'll call it a push.

DE - UNLV lost almost all of its production here. Team captain Brence did very, very little in 12 games last year. The other guys appear to be transfers or redshirt players. The Gophers return their top 4 guys + Cochran. Advantage MN.

DT - UNLV returns 3 guys who played a lot last year. They combined for over 60 tackles and 3.5 sacks. They appear to be mediocre at best in talent, size, and production. UNLV certainly doesn't have a player like Optimus Prime. Other than him, the Gophers are will primarily use new players. I'll call it a push.

LB – UNLV appears to play with 2 ILB’s and one OLB who tries to do it all (pass rush, coverage, etc). Inside guys Lotulelei (60) and Maka (54) plus good depth make LB the strongest area of their defense. At the outside spot, Jackson (39) and Tim Hasson (46) are returning. MN also returns 2 of 3 starters and also has some depth. Another push.

CB – Hodge (53 tackles and 0 INT’s) returns to one corner and the other side should be Penny and/or Wilson. Neither did much last year. MN may start a couple of Seniors. Edge to MN.

S - Tajh Hasson with just 17 tackles is last years only returning player. Keys, Vea and Crawford are either Freshmen or transfers. MN has no returning starters either, but Vereen has moved over from CB with many career starts under his belt. Slight edge to MN.

Specialists – Kicker Kohorst scored 51 points, missing 5 FG’s but making every PAT. Lansford punted for an average of 41.2. They graduated both their main KOR and PR players. Ummm….call it even??

Add it up and my amateur analysis says take the Gophers and the 8.5 points. Minnesota 36, UNLV 23.

Karl Juhnke -> RE: Gopher Football (8/29/2012 9:06:21 AM)

On my way to Vegas. I will take your advice and wager on the gophers.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (8/30/2012 2:49:09 PM)

C'mon people!
It's game day!

Corleone -> RE: Gopher Football (8/30/2012 10:14:19 PM)

Diggin' the new look unis. The darker maroon looks really good.

Corleone -> RE: Gopher Football (8/30/2012 10:18:53 PM)

Unfortunately Gray still can't hit the broad side of a barn. Missed a wide open TD and then threw a pick that nearly went all the way back.
