With this program there are no easy opponents right now.  We need to just stay the course, keep our heads down and keep working to get better.

Alipate getting some love from Reusse.
Have you been watching the kid lately, Lynn G?
Sounds like he's growing and maturing.
I hate to admit it, but I'm getting sucked into Gopher-hype already.
As others have said, if the program can finally turn the corner and recruit and attract great athletes year after year after year, we'll be on the right track. Size/speed/smarts.
Good article on Shady Solamon today also. Good citizens and good athletes are out there. Make the U the place they want to be.

By the sounds of it, Alipate is a pretty good LB. I'm wondering where the Gophers plan on playing him. They did move Grant to LB, but he knew that when he was offered a scholarship

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: Gopher Football (9/13/2008 9:47:50 AM)

Whats the verdict on the all-world QB kid they just sent home (Gray?)
Is there a chance he comes back? I'm sure that whole situation is affecting needs/plans.
I agree Jim, that Alipate is probably being looked at for D help, most likely as an active OLB.
Still one of our biggest needs. If I'm a kid that size, I volunteer to play whatever position gets me pt right away.

Gray is out for the year. I think he needs to re take the test. Haven't heard if he will stillwant to attend the U.

As for Alipate, I guess the Gophers could give him an opportunity to play QB, but if he doesn't beat anyone out, then he loses time learning the LB position. Tough call for the kid.

Jim Frenette -> RE: Gopher Football (9/13/2008 12:17:58 PM)

Watching the game, I see a lot of empty seats. I realize this team shouldn't be very competitive and that might be the reason. I'm wondering if that trend will continue with the new stadium on campus?

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Football (9/13/2008 12:19:50 PM)

I keep meaning to get to a Jefferson football game, partly to take a more recent peek at Alipate - but just haven't gotten over there.  Most of the other parents that we used to sit with have moved on now that their kids are all at college.

But it sounds like he's committed to the Gophers, right?

I'm betting not.   There's a TON of excitement about that new stadium and I'll bet the first couple of years they'll fill it no matter how the team does.

But the upbeat start to this season (they've got to win this game, right?) will help too.

Yes he has committed.

You might want to go to a game before you need to put the long johns on and carry a blanket[:D]

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: Gopher Football (9/13/2008 2:07:26 PM)

C'mon.
You cannot give Montana State a touchdown a quarter (or more)
Arghhhhh.

They have 325 yds, and there's still 10 minutes left in the game.
Have some pride. Play some defense.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: Gopher Football (9/13/2008 2:11:15 PM)

Weber with another nice efficient day, doesn't turn the ball over.
That used to be a huge problem for us.
We get that straightened out, and the rest of the game leaves us.
Haven't even run for a hundred yds yet today.
Can't stop their run. We are still a work in progress.
I'm not so sure we are ready for that NDSU re-match yet. [&o]

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: Gopher Football (9/13/2008 2:52:06 PM)

Another win.
Keep working fellas.
3-0 feels good.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: Gopher Football (9/13/2008 3:03:44 PM)

You know how to pick a winner, Lynn.
Mizzou is smothering people right now.
They've turned the corner with that program.

The way the Gopher defense was pushed around by MS, the Gophers won't win a game in the Big 10. Those guys are bigger and faster. This is a young defense and might be prettu good next year

I wish I could take credit for picking them - but it's my two sons that decided to go there.    But I've got a Mizzou sticker on my rear windshield!

The nice thing is that winning leads to winning.   More of the good recruits will look at Mizzou than used to and it'll keep the program going well.

That, of course, is the road that the Gophers are on as well.   Winning games plus a new stadium plus a head coach that could talk a blind man into buying a pair of binoculars ...

Things are looking up.   [sm=doindadomodance.gif]

(We need some smileys that have Gopher emblems)

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (9/13/2008 9:28:08 PM)

The biggest thing about this D is they still lack a  pass rush.  Van De Stig will flash once and a while (he had a great stat line tonight) but that's about it.  Our secondary is very young and inexperienced too.

Solomon was shady tonight and the kid from San Fran took the lead as our new RB.  Weber is becoming a very good QB but he still needs to learn to throw it away at times.  Also,  it's just STUPID coaching to run a QB sweep with 2 minutes to go when you are up by 2 scores.  WTF were we thinking?

Decker continues my Hiesman hype.  If he were a USC Trojan:

Brad H would believe in him and his name would be God

Karl H -> RE: Gopher Football (9/14/2008 11:47:14 PM)

Hey Jim....

Nice to see the Gophers at 3-0 so far...but this team is still learning how to win.  I thought 4 or 5 wins would be an acceptable season.  Bigger expections for 2009 however!

It sure sounds like he wants to return...

Gray issued a statement saying he expects to be back.
"I'm confident that I can clear up my situation this fall and I'm excited to rejoin my teammates at Minnesota," Gray said.
The Gophers have lost arguably the two best players from the freshman class as linebacker Sam Maresh will miss this season because of a heart ailment.

I thought Montana State might be a let down game....hopefully that was the case.  I believe they can play with the bottom half of the conference.  Winning a couple of those is certainly possible.

Also, it could be argued that our offense is younger than the defense.  On the 2 deep depth chart... offensively they will only lose the starting TE and the backup QB's.   Very replaceable.
Defensively, it's a couple DE's and a few LB's.  Probably 4 or 5 who play a lot.  Keep recruiting defense!  Rivals.com has a bunch of offensive players listed as early commits, but I'm hoping some of those will move over to the defense in college.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (9/15/2008 10:01:21 AM)

What's really scary to think about now is that the Gophers may get more wins than the Vikes and they have a better QB [:-]

Jim Frenette -> RE: Gopher Football (9/15/2008 10:03:31 AM)

Karl you need to post more, especially on college football. I miss reading your thoughts.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: Gopher Football (9/16/2008 10:25:24 AM)

Ok, this is just weird ....

Glen Mason will be a Big Ten Network television analyst for a Gophers football game for the first time when Minnesota plays at Ohio State on Sept. 27. The former Gophers coach will celebrate a more significant milestone before the game when he serves as an honorary captain for Ohio State, the school where he played and worked as an assistant coach.
Awkward?
"I don't think so," Mason said Monday after learning he'd be working the game. "Even when I do games like this weekend -- I've got Penn State against Temple -- I still have to be impartial, even though I'm a Big Ten guy."
Mason said Ohio State coach Jim Tressel approached him last summer about being an honorary Buckeyes captain.
He accepted the invitation, but he didn't know until Monday that the BTN would grant his request to allow him to work the game.
"Everything worked out," he said. "Of course, I was hoping that when I got the chance to do a Gophers game it would be a home game, so I wouldn't have to travel."
BTN officials say they're not concerned about Mason's close ties to both programs.
"He's had a relationship with both schools," said Elizabeth Conlisk, BTN vice president for communications. "But that comes with the territory when you hire famous alums -- you know there's a chance they might be honored someday. We know coach [Mason] is a professional."
Mason has continued to live in the Twin Cities since being fired as Gophers coach on Dec. 31, 2006.

I'm kind of a streaky poster here....

I wonder if Brad knows much about JuCo WR Hayo Carpenter from College of the Canyons.  Scout has him as a 5 star recruit.....and it looks like Minny is in the running.  Had a big season last year and already has 6 TD's in 2 games this year.

I see the Gophers are receiving 4 votes in the latest AP poll.  Hmmm...even as an optimistic fan, thats a bit soon for me.

Ask him in the Viking folder on the college thread. He will give you an answer if he knows.

If I were coaching that team I would make him a captain.  He was the biggest reason OSU cranked out wins against the Mighty Gophers.  [;)]

Good point, JJ

he always put such an emphasis on that game and I think we played well there once under him
I could be wrong.
Often times, it was all about him.
I don't miss that.
