Turning down a bowl game is one way of saying "this is not acceptable". That said, they'll accept an invitation.

Care to retract, Black 47?

Crazy shit is .... the Chippewas will PACK that place.
60,000 people will show, and 59,900 will be for Central Mich.

What the hell. Let's shock the world. Buy some tickets for this thing and get over to Detroit! Let's paint Detroit maroon and gold and take it to the bastards! We've got the invite....we may as well show up (both team and fans) and win in convincing fashion.

And we did it![sm=buttrock.gif]

That was the best I've seen ML play in his career. He threw the best pass of life in the 1st quarter and Wolitarsky "williamson'd" it.

Yep. That ball couldn't possibly have been thrown any better. When Wolitarsky looked like Lobster Boy dropping what should have been the easiest TD of his life, followed by the Gophers punting and Central Michigan scoring a TD, I thought we were headed for our most epic bowl failure ever. Mitch has been playing much better since Kill's retirement. Whatever else you want to say about him, Claeys gets that you have to be able to move the ball through the air at the D1 level and that QB's tend to be sharper when they get to throw more than 8 passes a game.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (12/29/2015 1:16:29 PM)

BTW, why is Sioux an offensive name for a college football team, but Chippewas is not?

A Chippewa is a type of tree.

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Football (12/29/2015 4:35:41 PM)

It irritated me the entire game that they said "Chippewas." Isn't the plural of Chippewa still Chippewa? Like deer?

Chippewa is the 4th largest Native American tribe in the country. Right behind the Sioux.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Football (12/30/2015 9:19:18 AM)

You know the answer, right?

The teams that have been DI for a long time have been grandfathered in by the NCAA. Seminoles, Illini, Chippewas, etc.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (12/30/2015 11:04:54 AM)

I believe some of them have actually paid off various tribes to be OK with it. The Seminoles come to mind. In the case of North Dakota, there were 2 tribal groups that had to give their OK. One was fine with them using the name and the other said they were deeply offended ... unless of course they wanted to pay them for the use of the name.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Football (12/30/2015 11:41:57 AM)

Of course it helps that a Chippewa is also a tree.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Football (12/30/2015 12:00:04 PM)

The school's athletics logo has changed over time; once featuring an Indian spear, it is now a stylized block letter "C". Within the university, the logo is often referred to as the "flying C" or the "running C", although it is officially called the "action C". The current version of the athletic trademark was first used in 1997.

The nickname is used with the consent of the nearby Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe, who have a positive relationship with the university. The university was placed on the NCAA's list of schools with "hostile and abusive" nicknames in August 2005, but appealed the decision, with the support of the tribe. On September 2, 2005 the university announced that their appeal of the decision had been upheld.

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Football (12/30/2015 12:14:19 PM)

Just asking because I don't know the answer - - - isn't the reason some schools have a problem is that the name of a tribe comes with an unpleasant adjective? Such as "Fighting Sioux?" Just saying Chippewa with a "C" for their logo doesn't disparage a group.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (12/30/2015 12:21:51 PM)

I don't think so. I'm not offended by Fighting Irish [;)]. If it was that simple NDSU would have just dropped Fighting from the team name and become the Sioux.

Leidner undergoes successful surgery.
Nice to see a medical issue get taken care of ASAP
Odd concept for some.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (12/31/2015 9:50:24 AM)

The final sign of the Apocalypse.
That Wisconsin squad beats USC in a bowl game.
Medicore Parity, ye have reached college football completely. Congrats.

Hate Wisconsin, but the Big 10 is doing OK?
Hopefully Michigan State keeps it going.

Man, USC versus Wisconsin. Giant meteors missed a huge opportunity there [>:]

Because they won? Two awful teams with no business in a bowl game.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (1/1/2016 8:49:47 AM)

Am I just getting old, or has CFB changed a great deal lately?
You better be overly loaded with Athletes.
Its a strange kind of shoving match out there.
Defenses don't really tackle the same way, lots of reaching, grabbing, and throwing people down instead of tackling.
Just HAVE to recruit people who can RUN and find open spaces. If you want to be relevant, anyway.

I had actually thought Mich State had entered the realm of legit national contenders. Nope. Not close.
I'm willing to give Iowa the benefit of doubt in the Rose today, but another B10 shellacking there wouldn't surprise me in the least.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (1/1/2016 10:31:59 AM)

4 more B10 games today
Should be interesting.
