I saw this in the Strib article on Claeys's recruiting: “It’s obvious that Tracy Claeys is looking, in general, for a different type of player than the program was under Jerry Kill,” said Josh Helmholdt, Midwest recruiting analyst for Rivals.com. “I didn’t see that coming because they were part of the same staff for so long. I wish he would have elaborated on that point. I know Claeys added a couple of massive JUCO OG who are projected to start next year. Kill has never been big on recruiting JUCO's. He did it occasionally, but not often. Claeys is going contrary to Kill in several areas. He opened the playbook right away on offense and started passing more, especially on 1st down. He fired Limegrover and the QB coach even though Skip had been with Kill as long as Claeys had. He gave the odd reason of wanting to consolidate the play calling. It seemed more like there was a distinct difference in philosophy and he was just being kind to a long time colleague in the press. I have read other things in the past that kind of hinted that despite their long term association on the same coaching staff, Claeys and Limegrover didn't see eye to eye on a lot of things. Now we hear this cryptic comment from a Rivals analyst about a difference in recruiting philosophy. Personally I am glad that Claeys looks determined to be his own man and not Jerry Kill 2.0. 1. Trying to be your predecessor never works and 2. He is making changes in the part of the game that was frustrating most of us. It also sounds like Green is better than the QB from Michigan who decommitted. He has the added benefit of being able to enroll in January and participate in spring practices.
