So looking forward to this season. The unbridled enthusiasm of some predictions is a bit much because it could go many different ways. But anything from 6-6 to 10-2 would not surprise me. 6-6 would be a buzzkill, but entirely possible. Likewise, 10-2 and a major bowl bid is possible.

Anything beyond those extremes would be surprising. Less than 6-6 and the Claeys coaching era is in serious jeopardy. Anything more than 10-2, they're naming future sports complex buildings after him.

It sounds like Tyler Johnson from Minneapolis North has made a huge impression and is climbing the WR depth chart as a true freshman. He was signed as a QB/DB. They moved him to WR in June and he just took off. I remember watching the kid in the prep bowl last year. GREAT athlete, with an extremely high football IQ.

They were talking about him on the KFAN morning show today. He has a 45" vertical. If so, he should be playing for Pitino. That's up in Jordan territory.

Yep, he was also the PG for the basketball team. Like I said, I just saw him the one time in the prep bowl, but he impressed the hell out of me. I thought there was an outside chance they might see what he could do at QB. He looked like he was tailor made for the Gophers offense. Then I saw the way he jumped a passing lane to pick off a pass and could see why they recruited him as a DB. Now it sounds like he is even more impressive at WR. Sounds like Claeys and Johnson almost immediately ruled out a red shirt season.

Black 47 -> RE: Gopher Football (9/1/2016 1:39:11 PM)

I don't think they'll win a conference game.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (9/1/2016 1:52:56 PM)

I think you're ugly.

Seriously, I think they will do just fine in the conference. Ohio State, Michigan and Michigan State are off the schedule this year.

Karl Juhnke -> RE: Gopher Football (9/1/2016 2:12:09 PM)

Nothing short of 3-0 non-conference is acceptable. Then the conference schedule starts out with two tough tests, Penn St. on the road, Iowa at home. Then there's the soft underbelly of the schedule in the middle. And two tough road games at Nebraska and Wisconsin towards the end.

Realistically, I say they stumble on one of the home games and two of the road games. Take your pick which ones. 9-3.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (9/1/2016 2:54:32 PM)

Penn St. on the road, Iowa at home are both very winnable games IMO. 10-2 would not surprise me at all this year.

Karl Juhnke -> RE: Gopher Football (9/1/2016 3:44:11 PM)

All are very winnable, I agree. Those first two games are exactly the type that represent a respectable test, but a good team should be able to handle. We'll find out very quickly which way this season will go.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (9/1/2016 4:02:30 PM)

Agreed Karl. And I will say again, I have absolutely no data to support it, nothing to quantify it or even a rational reason for saying it but ... in my gut I just have a really good feeling about Claeys. I think he is a guy who is going to win those games where we historically stumble over our own feet and steal some games that we aren't supposed to win. I think he will surpass Kill and Mase.

Brad H -> RE: Gopher Football (9/1/2016 4:53:29 PM)

Hopefully Leidner will learn how to play the position of quarterback in his fourth season as the starter.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (9/1/2016 5:44:50 PM)

first round pick baby! [8D]

The smartest move he made was getting rid of Limegrover. Not that he was terrible necessarily but it was time to modernize and time to break up the old Kill gang and put Claeys' own stamp on things.

From all accounts he made a good choice. Jay Johnson should open it up, he's had success everywhere, he's well respected, and there's even a local connection too.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (9/1/2016 7:02:55 PM)

My only problem with entire Kill era has been Limegrover. It was clear from day one. I'm shocked he lasted as long as he did. I still have serious reservations on Claeys but lets hope.

Karl Juhnke -> RE: Gopher Football (9/1/2016 7:56:18 PM)

I was always luke warm on limegrover but let's face it, he didn't airways have a lot to work with. He had some moderate success here and there, but I'm very glad Claeys went with someone new. Hard to imagine them moving forward with Limegrover. They needed new blood.

David Levine -> RE: Gopher Football (9/1/2016 8:06:18 PM)

Nice return by Myrick. He's got wheels.

David Levine -> RE: Gopher Football (9/1/2016 8:07:30 PM)

Awful 3rd and 1. No chance.

David Levine -> RE: Gopher Football (9/1/2016 8:10:37 PM)

Great punt and the D took advantage.

David Levine -> RE: Gopher Football (9/1/2016 8:17:34 PM)

Santoso is a hell of a punter!

Another one inside the 10.

David Levine -> RE: Gopher Football (9/1/2016 8:24:19 PM)

Gashed...

This is going well so far. Gophers trail 7-0. Offense has two three-and-outs, Poock ejected and defense giving up big plays. Other than that

David Levine -> RE: Gopher Football (9/1/2016 8:47:35 PM)

Man, Devers is FAST off the edge.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Football (9/1/2016 8:48:10 PM)

Leidner looks awesome. NFL? Must be desparate. 5' over a couple of receiver's heads. blech

David Levine -> RE: Gopher Football (9/1/2016 9:03:37 PM)

Devers again.

Love the way Claeys is using Devers. Brings him in on third down, stand up rusher. Too fast around edge for Oregon State right tackle.
