So we get the Brewster style rah-rah guy. Except this guy comes with a head coaching resume. He had the top ranked recruiting class in the MAC for 4 years straight. You might say MAC, big deal. But they all have roughly the same recruiting limitations and he consistently was at the top. That's how you build a program. First and foremost you need the horses.
And he took that MAC team to a bigger bowl game than the Gophers have played in over 50 years. I can live with a lot of bumper sticker cliches if he wins and runs a solid program.

Fleck had a lot of talent on that Western Michigan team. They looked like a program that could compete with anyone.
The last coaches we had couldn't figure out that Leidner was a bum for 3.5 years.

The Gophers had defensive talent to win 10 games and contend for the title. Claeys is a very good defensive coach that was too buddy buddy with his players. He isn't a bad coach---he would be a great MAC coach and after a couple years of seasoning could be ready.

First thing he may want to do is find a good diet, or he will be dead before he finds his next job. Seriously, I look at that guy and wonder when he is going to drop dead on the sidelines. Dude has to be pushing 4-bills.

I felt the same way. Say what you want but image is an important part of being a college head coach. To have such a large guy coaching an athletic program was not good. Not to mention the health issues.

Reminds me of a great t-shirt I saw in the Kansas crowd one year when Mangino was coaching them. "Our coach can eat your coach" it said.

First of all let me say that I have no idea if Fleck is at long last the guy to lead us out of decades of embarrassment and mediocrity. What I do like is that Coyle identified his guy right away and went out and got him. We were spared the embarrassing cluster f***s that were previous major coach searches conducted by Teague and Maturi.
After hearing about how Norwood had a short list of BB coaches in his pocket at all times courtesy of his great Villa 7 program, we were subjected to a series of thanks but no thanks response including Flip Saunders who absolutely bled maroon & gold before settling for Pitino based on his name more than any accomplishments. Joel Maturi was even worse by first using an outside service to get us Basement Brew and then going through an embarrassing string of talking to coaches without getting permission from the schools’ permission first, getting doors slammed in his face, having alumni urging coaches not to come and work for him and finally settling on Kill and trying to pass him off as his first choice.
Coyle has a bit more of a major league feel to him than our last couple of AD's. From his comments when announcing the firing of Claeys, I got the sense that he knows you have to invest in a real coach and be ready to pay him at this level. He seems to understand that an athletic department at this level is a big time operation and it has to be run as such. Athletic departments have to be self-funding and the success of high revenue sports is crucial. I don’t know if he got the right guy or not. I do appreciate the way he went about getting him though.

I like how he had Fleck and Miles ready....no brainer to let Claeys go IMO. You don't sell out seats and with no new money coming in because Claeys & Kill weren't great fund raisers plus the new scandal had people picking one of Admin/Coach/Players. As bad as Brewster was as a coach I went to a Gophers Athletics fund raiser at Perham and Brainerd. I even was able to see Tubby in Perham one year. John Anderson always showed up to those whereas Tubby showed once in four years (our boss told them Tubby better come or no money as he was a big booster for the Baseball Team as his son was a stud for the team back in the day).

Brewster sure could fundraise even though Mason/Claeys/Kill were always the better coaches. Now hopefully we have the combo fundraiser/coach we need to move forward.

I did enjoy the defensive coaching job that Claeys did....we had a big time defense last year (even though the offense outside of Smith/Brooks stunk).

That's an interesting point. I remember a story in the Pioneer Press after Mason was fired. The article stated that there were a lot of local high school coaches who did not like Mason. He came off as arrogant and aloof didn't seem to have any interest in forming working relationships with the Minnesota high school coaches. Basement Brew came in and immediately barn stormed the state to meet with every last one of them. In the short term he made a great impression and was a hell of a salesman. Too bad he couldn't coach and had no idea how to run a program.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (1/6/2017 1:28:40 PM)

A short term boost is that recruits from a better recruiting class than ours are sure to follow Fleck here.

http://www.twincities.com/2017/01/06/expect-western-michigan-recruits-to-follow-p-j-fleck-to-minnesota/

“I committed to P.J. Fleck,” said Tyrone Chambers, a three-star defensive tackle who has reopened his recruitment. “I’m willing to follow P.J. Fleck wherever he goes.”

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Football (1/6/2017 1:49:24 PM)

In a statement Friday, Coyle called Fleck "a proven winner and a strong leader."

"He's built a unique, positive culture that gets the best out of his students on the field and in the classroom," Coyle said of Fleck. "His infectious energy and passion make him a terrific coach and dynamic recruiter. I am excited he will be leading the Gophers for years to come."

You aren't the only one either (worried how big he has gotten)....he had better watch it.

Glad someone else addressed it.
Looked bad as the head of a group you want to be fit and athletic.
Sorry, it's truth.

Brewster/Anderson/Borton made time for everything/everyone at the Gopher Outstate Fundraising --Golf Scrambles....Mason/Kill/JJ/Tubby/Lucia hardly ever showed at the fundraising events outstate that I went to--they would send their assistants. Fans remember that too. I think I went for 5 years in a row in Perham and Brewster/Anderson/Borton went the majority and Tubby showed once as did the Hockey coach--Lucia (Perham doesn't have a hockey program so that isn't as big as a surprise).

You want to raise money & fundraise for the new athlete village...Fleck is the man. It tells you something that the University had to bring back Nanne instead of Kill....

Grew up with the gophers #1 in-state signee this years Dad and his family.
They're not Fleck fans.
Psssssst ... That's ok.

Why not?

MN offense was hardly the stuff of future NFL stars.

It takes some time...maybe a few calls will help, maybe not. Did they like Claeys (as that is bound to cause friction)?

They loved Claeys.
They're staying, but were turned off by Fleck during recruiting.
Like I said, it's not a big deal. I'll be pleasantly surprised if the kid ever sees the field.
No matter who coaches.

Phil Riewer -> RE: Gopher Football (1/6/2017 2:35:38 PM)

Sounds like Sid and his repaired hip are going to be at the Press Conference (according to Chip Scoggins). He had Ruesse helping him there....:)

McMurfy -> RE: Gopher Football (1/6/2017 2:41:05 PM)

Word out of Eugene is that PJ Fleck and his people were the only one's saying he was up for the job at Oregon.
Word was that Fleck was all sizzle and no steak.
That being said, I like Fleck and think he is potentially the best Head Coach Minnesota will have had since the days of Leather Helmets.

Claeyes(sp) and Kill were terrible, as you will hopefully soon see.

With a Tape Recorder plugged into a microphone.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Football (1/6/2017 3:12:23 PM)

Listening to the Fleck press conference. He managed to outdo Brewster. He just said he has visions of Rose Bowls and National Championships.

Jeezo Beezo, I can't wait for next season.

Please tell me he didn't say Gopher Nation.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Football (1/6/2017 3:38:30 PM)

I think it would be funny if one of the reporters brings up a Brewster comparison with Fleck. See if he is aware of the scary similarities.

No, but he has gone with Ski-U-Mah approximately a dozen times.

Phil Riewer -> RE: Gopher Football (1/6/2017 3:41:10 PM)

I remember the only thing stopping Brewsters yapper was a sore throat from talking so damn much.....lol

McMurfy -> RE: Gopher Football (1/6/2017 3:56:05 PM)

I'm sure Fleck is already having his agent throw is name out there for job openings in San Francisco and Denver.

Karl Juhnke -> RE: Gopher Football (1/6/2017 4:39:36 PM)

He's going to be on Barreiro sometime soon. I'm sure Barreiro will go down that line of questioning, how we've heard it before and how do you convince people you're more than talk.

What I heard of his press conference was pretty entertaining. He was really wound up. Even the simplest question would unleash at minimum 10 motivational poster type proclamations. I do not exaggerate.

But in between the bluster he said some really smart things. It's going to be a mixture. And it's not going to be dull.

Karl Juhnke -> RE: Gopher Football (1/6/2017 4:42:16 PM)

He has already latched onto Ski-U-Mah. He says it like a samurai warrior charging into battle.
