They just flashed the message, gophers have given up zero points in the second half this season. I don't care who you're playing, that's impressive.

David Levine -> RE: Gopher Football (9/16/2017 5:43:05 PM)

Minnesota wins 34-3. P.J. Fleck becomes the first #Gophers coach to start his career 3-0 since Murray Warmath in 1954.

Nice. Hopefully they can follow this up with a solid Big Ten showing.

I just checked the Coaches poll and the Gophers came in at 37th. Not sure if this is an updated vote after yesterdays game or not. Not bad for a rebuilding season after all the key players graduating from last years team.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (9/18/2017 10:39:07 AM)

Another nice outing
Worried about the current offense once the real opponents start, tho.
We won't be pushing B10 teams around. Will our players be able to move the ball?
As usual, RBs are as good as anyone's
A couple nice receivers, and one possible star ...
But.
Can our QB get the ball to the right people when needed?

This is not a rebuilding year. There were a lot of key returning players and Leidner graduating was addition by subtraction. Fleck took over a team that won 9 games and a decent level bowl game. There are some depth issues on the lines, but all in all I think most people expected them to be almost as competitive as they were last year.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (9/18/2017 11:01:38 AM)

Think I tried to bring that up awhile back
This was a pretty solid team at the end of last year
Think there was some "hey lets lower expectations" work going on
Not a bad plan, but in truth, this should be a good year.
Worried by the injuries to the RBs on Saturday
Those guys are bellcows. We need em leading the way.

Line play is going to be a huge factor. They graduated some decent line men and haven't really done a great job recruiting the line that last couple of years. I think Rhoda can be competent if the line is solid and the running game is moving the ball. If the run game gets stuffed, I don't see Rhoda as the big play QB, who will make things happen. That's why Croft has been a disappointment. He is younger, more skilled and has a higher ceiling, but he hasn't stepped up and grabbed the opportunity. Maybe Green will push past the top before the end of the year. It sounds like the best guy is a freshman (can't think of the name), but Fleck is adamant that he is not willing to pull his red shirt.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (9/18/2017 1:01:37 PM)

Someone help me with the latest Gopher FB commercial that runs on the B10 network and FSN
Typical Minnesotan taking tickets with the typical goofy MN smile and nice talk
Then they go to a "we're not that nice" thing where they talk about us being just like the Fargo characters.
Umm, where is Fargo?
I get it, it's our persona, I get it, but there's no Fargo, Mn.

The team was dang good on defense last year and didn't lose much even after the Salem witch trials. Good thing Winfield stayed on.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (9/18/2017 1:11:35 PM)

Say that every time Winfield makes a play Phil ...
Thank god the family stuck with this program
Would have been very easy to move on

I think they were really lucky to get Fleck, he was able to get the ones to stay who beat the witch trials:

Winfield stayed
Green stayed
McCreary stayed
Shenault stayed

& also Rhoda stayed as he was going to transfer

After losing the 3 DBs who did get expelled plus Winfield and Shenault transferring if they got pissed enough---would have been a mess.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (9/18/2017 1:49:50 PM)

Rhoda graduated and was going to get a job and start his career.

Not true, he was going to play QB somewhere:

Yes true.

“I kind of explored a couple options, but honestly, I was probably a week away from looking for a job,” Rhoda said Saturday.

Because Claeys was going to cut his scholarship and Fleck wasn't....reread the article again Sweens.

Former coach Tracy Claeys had been blunt, telling Rhoda his scholarship wouldn’t be renewed once he graduated last December. Rhoda was crushed. The former walk-on from Cretin-Derham Hall had looked forward to competing for the starting job this year, as a graduate student.

This part was if he wasn't put on scholarship his fifth year:
“I kind of explored a couple options, but honestly, I was probably a week away from looking for a job,” Rhoda said Saturday.

When the Gophers fired Claeys in early January and replaced him with P.J. Fleck, it quickly changed the picture. With his strong, accurate arm and the experience that comes with being a fifth-year senior, Rhoda is better suited for the system Fleck and offensive coordinator Kirk Ciarrocca run. They rely heavily on the run-pass-option, which demands quick decisionmaking from the QB.

I like your outlook, but the vast majority of what I had read regarding this season was it was going to be a rebuilding year and Fleck was going to learn a lot about losing.

kgdabom -> RE: Gopher Football (9/18/2017 4:38:36 PM)

Coaches poll likes Gophers a lot more than the AP. Gophers currently at 35th on the coaches poll not receiving a single point from the AP. We're ahead of Iowa and Michigan State on the coaches poll while they receive points in the AP and we don't.

The quarterback has to have a brighter future than Leidner. That kid was terrible.

Right.

Some people predicted maybe a slight step back because we were seen as overachieving a bit down the stretch - plus factoring in learning a whole new coaching scheme.

But definitely not a "rebuilding year". And people that paid more than cursory attention to the team figured if we could find a QB that could put the ball near a target, we'd have a chance to be better.

Phil Riewer -> RE: Gopher Football (9/18/2017 10:46:08 PM)

+1

About the only thing gone from last years team was the Center and Leidner on offense and one of the top corners on defense. Not even close to a rebuild....many thought last years team should have won 10 games with their schedule.

Karl Juhnke -> RE: Gopher Football (9/19/2017 4:58:18 AM)

Not a rebuilding year, but I think any time a new coach and staff come in, they're allowed a 'reset' year, where even if he's taking over a pretty good team there may a slight slide backwards while installing everything new. I think this year's Gophers have a chance to avoid that though and be as good as last year.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (9/19/2017 9:06:55 AM)

Maryland isn't a pushover anymore. This will be a very good test to see where we are. Should be fun.

I hate open weekends. [X(]
Even tho we probably need it, with our RB issues.
