Huge 15 yard penalty for OS after driving to our 1.

David Levine -> RE: Gopher Football (9/9/2017 10:09:33 PM)

Didn't matter....

bstinger -> RE: Gopher Football (9/9/2017 10:13:28 PM)

Not looking good now...hurry up offense backfires.

bstinger -> RE: Gopher Football (9/9/2017 11:42:43 PM)

Looking much better now. Penalties and turnovers by the Beavers are helping big-time, but we look like the better team in most phases.

bstinger -> RE: Gopher Football (9/10/2017 12:18:57 AM)

41-14 with 3:00 and counting. Nice job. Croft scores as I type this.

kgdabom -> RE: Gopher Football (9/10/2017 1:28:55 AM)

48-14 on the road over a Pac 12 team doesn't suck. Oregon State is not what one might consider a football power though. Fleck has the boat rowing in the right direction.

Phil Riewer -> RE: Gopher Football (9/10/2017 6:49:37 AM)

Offense looked so much better.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (9/10/2017 9:33:11 AM)

By the way, in case it escaped anyone's notice, Tyler Johnson is a stud. I've followed the kid since his days as the starting QB / CB at Minneapolis North. They recruited him as a DB, but I was actually hoping they would look at him at QB before making that decision. The kid is a great talent, hard worker, leader and a winner. I cringed when Claeys moved him to WR. I had visions of his talent being wasted at that position in offenses that had no concept of a passing game. But, in the end, the cream finds a way to rise to the top.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (9/10/2017 1:06:18 PM)

Yeap. He/Celestine/Rhoda and Brooks were difference makers. We only had 1 stinker, IMO, and that was the KO's. They landed between the 10-15 and usually got returned past the 30.

Not sure if we are kicking them short by design or not but I don't like it. He also botched a pooch kick after a 15 yard penalty. Kicking from the 50, he tried to pin them deep and kicked it OOB.

They've definitely got a prime target receiver established. Even in a game where they threw only 8 times Johnson still managed a decent stat line. 4 catches, 127 yards and a TD.

And about those 8 passes. It's an aberration. It's not a return to the Kill / Claeys days. The circumstances dictated running - they got in the lead and the weather turned bad. You have two very effective running backs, so at that point you turn the game over to them.

I think Fleck will know how to utilize WRs like we haven't seen here before maybe ever. But he's also going to be flexible enough to go with what the game dictates. And I think he's going to learn to love Smith and Brooks, his two stellar RBs.

Thought we might struggle there.
Pleasantly surprised.

The running game looked so much better....pouring rain helped them work on that I guess...[;)]

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (9/11/2017 9:55:37 AM)

The one thing about the running game that was a bit worrying was they seem to run the same 2 plays nonstop. I would like to see more diversity. Especially to the outside. I am hoping the weather played a part in it.

stfrank -> RE: Gopher Football (9/11/2017 10:32:32 AM)

I heard a little bit of the PJ Fleck show on KFAN the other day and it sounded like they are only showing a little bit of their playbook at this point. I suspect we will see more as the season progresses.

With the big lead and the 2nd half shutouts, I'm pretty sure we've been exceptionally vanilla so far.

I would actually love it if we ran just one play and ran it so well the other team could never stop it.

I think it was partly the weather and partly because they just kept doing it because they were never stopped at it. From Rhoda's postgame comments:
quote:

“They were awesome,” Rhoda said of the line. “… Coach [Kirk] Ciarrocca [offensive coordinator] was saying, ‘Hey, we’re going to mash that thing up the middle.’ Once [the Beavers defense] stopped being able to stop us from doing that, I knew were going to kind of take the life out of them.”

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Football (9/11/2017 3:18:25 PM)

Jerry Kill had a "minor seizure"; is back in the hospital

Fleck says Rhoda is the qb til further notice

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (9/11/2017 3:21:14 PM)

Man, that poor dude.
One of those .....

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (9/12/2017 7:24:07 AM)

Re-watched the game
* Love the white unis
* We ass-kicked them
* We enjoyed ass-kicking them
* We have some pretty damn good athletes who like to have fun
* They're all bought in right now
* A couple guys deep at most positions, who all want to play (very key)

Just like our pro team .. gotta stay very patient here. But there are some good signs ......

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (9/12/2017 8:48:38 AM)

Agree with all of that and more. Love the adjustments from week 1 to week 2. Love that some real studs are emerging this year. Winfield, Johnson, Celestine and more are all buying into the "ELITE" concept.

As hard as I am trying not to gulp the Kool-Aid, I'm even loving the PJ sprint leading the team on and off the field. DAMN IT! There went another gulp.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (9/12/2017 8:57:57 AM)

This team has some "bully" in it.
Not a bad thing, in football.
There are some hyped-up, aggressive, mouthy kids on this roster.
Tired of always playing against those types. Would be nice to have it on our side for once.

Btw ... Fleck has so many things that should drive people mad, but its' him, and it doesn't for some reason.
The I-only-hand-the-football-to-the-ref thing would drive me nuts years ago, but now I like it.
If you are ok with your idiosyncrasies and use them to your advantage like Fleck does, you can't fault him until he fails miserably.
And he hasn't yet.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (9/12/2017 9:02:10 AM)

They couldn't be more different personality wise, but there is an element of Herbie in there. He does and says everything for a reason. He knows what buttons to push and when to push them.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (9/12/2017 9:07:59 AM)

Good comp.
Some love him, some probably hate him, but you can really never call him fake.
He truly believes the way he does things .... will work.
And yes, its surprising how many are faking it. He's not fake from all accounts.
I hear stuff about him away from the field and it's not an act.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (9/12/2017 9:17:41 AM)

That sequence where we simply pounded the ball at them for like 20 straight runs ... was incredible.
That's belief, and perseverance.
No impatience at all. Loved it.
