And before anyone calls me 'negative nancy'. We are giving up an average of 30 points per against comp that isn't exactly a murder's row of teams.

I don't think it is negative nancy, I think its reality. To be fair to the defense, 5 TD came as as either direct result of a TO, short field created by a TO, failing to cover an onside kick or the opponent starting on the Gopher 20 as part of OT. The D is doing better than 30 ppg, but that's a hell of a lot of mistakes leading to points against not the greatest competition. That has to be cleaned up. The defense is also losing intensity later in games. The old, playing not to lose instead of playing to win.

The only place, I differ slightly with you is that the offensive line is hands down the biggest frustration to me. The Gophers are bigger across the offensive front than most NFL O-lines. They should be able to overpower the typical college D-line in a power running game. There should big cloud of nasty swirling around them when they step up to the line of scrimmage and I just don't see it.

I'm starting to get that feeling again … the one where I start thinking …. "hey, are we..."
Please stop me before I hurt myself, again.

But anyway.
THAT was a good win.
Purdue thought they'd roll us.
Its nice when you are good enough to go … NOPE. Not today.

We not only won our Big Ten opener, but managed to get through it without losing Winfield Jr for the season.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (9/30/2019 10:13:13 PM)

I mentioned the D because I think the OLine will still get better. I think the D is what we think it is. Could be a sucker. End on a positive note though, I've been told and damn….Morgan and the WR's were absolute fire.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (10/1/2019 6:45:59 AM)

Well, he's no Mitch Leidner.

Thank God.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (10/1/2019 9:06:36 AM)

Rewatched it.
Could have been a 40 point blowout if we had kept the foot on the gas.
Purdue were absolute pricks at the end, players and fans and coaches all felt robbed.
I thought it was finally a well-officiated B10 game. First ever. Weird how that works.
They let the play go. they stayed out of deciding the game. Thats all I ever ask out of refs.
Our receivers will play on Sundays. Lost of em will.
Favorite part was the immediate game plan to attack. Put them on their heels and they never really recovered.
D has some obvious holes, but we also have some studs.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (10/1/2019 9:39:32 AM)

Like it. Tanner Morgan's reaction to a record breaking passing performance and being named Big Ten offensive player of the week ... “I got to be better.” Apparently he was talking about leadership. Sounds like he takes responsibility for sacks because he didn't make better protection calls.

Sounds like a great kid
He fell a couple of times when he felt pressure, wasn't really touched by a defender.
Good to hear he's looking to keep improving.
Made some really nice throws early, missed some late. Great stats tho.
He and the WRs made Purdue look like chumps almost every passing down.
Harder tests are coming. Sure seems like we have enough offensive talent. LOTS of RBs too.
Glad to see the OL was being liberally substituted. A couple of the big hosses need breaks.

Pete M. -> RE: Gopher Football (10/1/2019 3:55:28 PM)

My question? Can Tanner stand in and deliver a strike on a key 3rd and 7 against Iowa/Wisconsin late in the year, when the defense is in a tight man coverage and guys aren't running free across the middle against a befuddled zone? Purdue had no chance against the RPO, and many of those were simple pitch-and-catches across the middle. They'll get more man to man (and pressure) in later games. I have no doubt that Bateman and Johnson will get a step on their man; will Tanner be able to stand in/avoid the pressure and deliver a strike? Can't say I'm confident at this point.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (10/1/2019 4:08:23 PM)

Pete, what you say about Purdue's defense is true. On the other hand, Morgan exploited it for all it was worth. I don't care who you are playing against; completing 21 out of 22 is damn impressive. Here is Morgan's passing line for the year ... 69 out of 94 for 73.4%, 1,095 yds, 11.6 ypc, 10 TD, 2 int and a 202.1 rating.

No doubt, there are much, much stronger challenges to come, but I have more faith in Morgan to deliver in those situations than I ever had in Mitch Leidner, Phillip Nelson, Connor Rhoda, MarQueis Grey or anyone else this century.

Pete M. -> RE: Gopher Football (10/1/2019 4:13:56 PM)

Tim, you're absolutely right. Crazy impressive. Same thing in the bowl game last year: when we play the RPO effectively off the explosive mid-level passing game, the offense is fantastic. Let's see what happens when it's 3rd and 8 and the RPO isn't a threat. I tend to agree that I trust Tanner more than the other guys you mentioned, though it may also be because we've never had a WR corps like Johnson/Bateman/Autman-Bell/Douglas.

Speaking of WR corps -- does anyone else remember the Wells? Thelwell and Atwell? They were a pretty good duo. Wacker could definitely design a passing attack; unfortunately, he couldn't design much else. [&:]

The Gophers are the Jack Morris of college football. Do just enough to win the game. No more, no less. Will it get us to the Rose Bowl like it got Jack to the Hall of Fame?

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (10/1/2019 4:52:31 PM)

Very true.
Just enough to win.
Which is ok.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (10/3/2019 2:24:22 PM)

Not trying to get the cart out front here … but
We gotta hammer these guys Saturday, no?
If we're any good?

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (10/3/2019 2:30:30 PM)

We gotta hammer these guys Saturday, yes.
Gotta show we can fix the issues.
Gotta show we can deliver payback with interest.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (10/3/2019 2:34:13 PM)

Enjoyed Flecks show this week recapping the Purdue game, but got pretty uncomfy by the end.
Coughlin was on and was very candid about the defense's struggles.
But then he went into how deeply the team is immersed into using its religious faith.
Lets nip that some, PJ. I get allowing individuals to use whatever motivates them. But keep it nipped.

And a bad drop by Tyler Johnson.

Dropped pass by Johnson, sloppy start.

bstinger -> RE: Gopher Football (10/5/2019 3:10:51 PM)

Running game is solid. Stick with it for a while.
