Good for Fleck

As noted, starting to swim closer to the deep end. Coach like a stud and it'll take care of itself.

bstinger -> RE: Gopher Football (11/5/2019 8:40:26 PM)

If PJ were to sign a contract and break it right away he would lose his credibility. That is worth a lot to him, I don't see him doing it.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (11/5/2019 10:07:00 PM)

So we just entered a new era where we aren't rowing the boat. Dare I say we just bought a Minnkota trolling motor? [:-]

Phil Riewer -> RE: Gopher Football (11/6/2019 7:10:26 AM)

If all goes well maybe they expand seating at the stadium? :) That is the best case scenario as the stadium was built to be able to expand by 30k.

This essentially takes him off the market for two years. At that point they will be negotiating another extension anyway. And you're right, it makes absolutely no sense that Fleck would go through the process of signing a big new contract if he planned to jump after the season. If he tries to go after next year, the $10 million buy out comes into play. Regardless of what some think, that is a big chunk of change for a college football power to shell out on top of what would likely be a $50 - $60 million contract. That all of course assumes that one of the big powers is looking for a coach after next year and designated Fleck as their guy. Ohio State, Auburn, Alabama and LSU obviously won't be looking. USC and Florida State will have filled their vacancies this year.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (11/6/2019 9:02:51 AM)

I liked what Fleck said about finally establishing here what people did elsewhere
Fitzgerald at Northwestern
Alvarez at Wisconsin
Ferenz at Iowa
What I've begged for for years.
We're not asking to be Clemson or Alabama
We're asking for a program that yearly contends for realistic success in our world.
Have always said "why not us"?
It truly sounds like Fleck gets that. FINALLY. Someone at least understands that process. It takes a damn long time.
And he's on that path.

Phil Riewer -> RE: Gopher Football (11/6/2019 9:07:52 AM)

The big key here is that if they pay him he will stay.....you go to certain programs and there is history of coaches (Bowden-FSU, Carroll-USC, Myles-LSU). He doesn't have that battle here....he is able to recruit anywhere too....

MDK -> RE: Gopher Football (11/6/2019 12:40:11 PM)

Badger ahead of the Gophers in the Football Playoff Rankings poll....

Pen State goes up a notch in the playoff rankings as compared to the AP poll.

I say.....Gophers.......win out and make the decision for the pollsters easy.

Agreed. Want to know the big, long-term difference? When kids in town grow up dreaming that they'll be good enough to play for you some day. Kids in Michigan dream of wearing Maize and Blue. Kids in Ohio dream of wearing Scarlet and Gray. Here? Minnesota has been so mediocre for so long that Minnesota seems to be the "safety school" for most kids -- i.e., if they're the only D-1 option I've got, great, but otherwise I'm looking elsewhere. And I'm guessing it'll take at least a decade of sustained success before that significantly starts to change.

But we don't have a color scheme anymore.

Yep being able to retain quality staff is key.

And the flip side, I first got sold on Fleck when he canned his DC and saw an immediate turnaround. If something’s wrong he won’t hesitate to pull the trigger to fix it, even mid season.

That's loyalty for you. [&:][:'(]

Loyalty? The defense was awful.Loyalty doesn't mean sticking with someone who sucks at their job.

That's about how I see it. This guarantees he'll be here a minimum 2 more years. He wouldn't go through all these motions and spout everything he did if that weren't the case.

Anything after that, there are too many variable to even predict. And that's true of any coach. He will likely be here longer but who knows?

Yup.

I'd say that he was showing loyalty to the program and all the kids on the team by getting rid of someone holding everyone else back.

Choosing loyalty to one over loyalty to many is how you end up with Richard Solomon coaching on your team for 10 years.

If the Gophers miraculously win out could they get in the Championship playoff? They would get a playoff game with Ohio State right. That would do it.

Why aren't their tampering rules with college coaches under contract?

You can justify it all you want, but firing your coaches is not loyalty. If you are being loyal you stick with them and help them turn it around. Was his D coordinator bad? I don't know. Good coaches can only do so much. However, I agree it was probably the smart move, the best move, but don't say it was the loyal move.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (11/7/2019 6:55:18 AM)

There is loyalty and there is loyalty to a fault.

Starting to get that …. "uh ohhhh, everyone's getting on board, this isn't good" …. feeling, again.
I no likey when that happens.

Will this time be different?

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (11/7/2019 9:11:39 AM)

The main thing that worries me is that Kamal Martin is still a game time decision.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (11/7/2019 9:55:07 AM)

I grew up in a time where the Big Two were pretty much untouchable in the B10
One thing that buoys me at this time is that Penn State is NOT that type.
Very solid. Well coached. Talented. Good in all phases.
But NOT unbeatable or god-like.
I truly believe if we just settle in, no matter what happens early, we can play right with them.
I don't see the hug gap that used to exist, or the need for a miracle.
Hang with them. Punch them back. Stay relaxed even if the wheels go off at times.
Beating top-ranked Michigan in 1977 is probably my favorite Gopher memory of all time.
It won't take that type of miracle. Be ready to battle fellas. They won't be taking us lightly.

Agreed. One thing that could help is that Penn State is perennially overrated. Beating Michigan and Michigan State is not nearly as impressive as it was a couple of decades ago.

Here is a pretty fair and balanced article on Gopher football.

https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/minnesota-is-finally-a-program-to-reckon-with/

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (11/7/2019 1:35:01 PM)

Dat's a good one.
As you say, pretty even-keeled in the delivery.

bstinger -> RE: Gopher Football (11/7/2019 2:56:01 PM)

I believe we're for real. Almost fully healthy and as talented as we've been in my lifetime at least. We will give Penn State a fight, we may not win, but I expect a good game. Barring major injury issues I expect to go 3-1 in the final 4 games and be in the big 10 title game. Question is, will it be OSU or PSU? It would be cool to win that, but I'm not expecting it yet.

If we finish 11-2 and the team winning the Big 10 title game goes to the CFP, what would the likelihood be of a Rose Bowl appearance? I think that would be awesome.
