Can already tell we're going to lose this one. Zebras are clearly pro Badger. Play calling too conservative after the big play and the 2nd and 1. Take a shot FFS. FG's aren't going to win, not when you give up pick 6's.

Gophers won handily.

Yeah recruits are going to love this.
I thought he stayed one more year already due to COVID.

I am not worried about Clark---he was 3rd or 4th string after Kramer and Annexstad. More worried about the dynamic 4th star they redshirted from Illinois I believe.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (11/29/2021 12:10:15 PM)

Yeap. It's the domino effect this may have.

OC Sanford was fired also.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (11/29/2021 4:57:26 PM)

Why the hell would you fire your OC before the Bowl Game?

Mister Ed -> RE: Gopher Football (11/29/2021 8:52:57 PM)

The Gophers will have a new play-caller in 2022 as offensive coordinator Mike Sanford Jr. will not return for a third season with the team, a source with knowledge of the situation confirmed to the Star Tribune on Monday.

Sanford's contract is set to expire on Jan. 31. He was making $650,000 and will not coach in the Gophers bowl game, per the source.

Sanford oversaw an offense that had and up-and-down season, closing strong with a 23-13 win against a tough Wisconsin defense on Saturday as the team finished the regular season 8-4. But the offense also struggled mightily in a 14-10 loss to lowly Bowling Green and a 14-6 loss to Illinois.

With Sanford replacing Kirk Ciarrocca, who left for Penn State following the 2019 regular season, Gophers quarterback Tanner Morgan and the passing offense saw their productivity decline the past two seasons.

With the help of a pair of wide receivers now in the NFL, Morgan passed for school records of 3,253 yards and 30 touchdowns in 2019 on his way to second-team All-Big Ten honors. He averaged 250.2 passing yards per game.

In 2020, Morgan's average dropped to 196.3 yards, and he had seven touchdown passes with five interceptions in seven games. This year as the Gophers emphasized the running game, rushing 69.3% of the time, Morgan passed for an average of 161.3 yards per game with 10 TDs and eight interceptions.

The Gophers averaged 26.1 points per game this season, down eight points from their 2019 mark of 34.1. Their passing offense of 166.4 yards per game ranked 12th in the Big Ten and 115th nationally among 130 FBS teams.

When Ciarrocca left to become Penn State's offensive coordinator, wide receivers coach Matt Simon served as Gophers offensive coordinator for the 31-24 Outback Bowl victory over Auburn. Sanford was hired as co-offensive coordinator with Simon, but Sanford served as the main play-caller.

As for a replacement for Sanford, the Gophers could turn to Simon, a Farmington native who's been with coach P.J. Fleck since 2014 at Western Michigan. Another intriguing name could be Ciarrocca, an offensive analyst at West Virginia this season after being let go after one year at Penn State. Gophers running backs coach Kenni Burns has excelled with his group, and tight ends coach Clay Patterson is a former offensive coordinator at the junior college and Division II levels.

Fleck signed a new contract Nov. 2 that runs through the 2028 season and gives him an additional $350,000 next year to add to salaries of assistant coaches and other staff members.

The new offensive coordinator also will enjoy the return of running back Mohamed Ibrahim, the 2020 Big Ten running back of the year who was lost in the 2021 opener because of a torn Achilles' tendon. The Gophers relied heavily this season on redshirt freshman Ky Thomas and true freshman Mar'Keise Irving after two other veterans, Trey Potts and Bryce Williams, were lost to season-ending injuries.

The news came Sunday that Morgan will return for a sixth season with the chance to be the starter for his fourth full season. Two backup QBs, Zack Annexstad and Jacob Clark, have entered the transfer portal.

Minnesota averaged 198.5 rushing yards per game this year, 31st nationally and third in the Big Ten. The Gophers also ranked fourth nationally in time of possession (35:10).

Karl Juhnke -> RE: Gopher Football (11/30/2021 5:54:40 PM)

I guess I give Fleck credit on the OC change. Not because I feel a change needs to be made. I have no idea. The offense stumbled at times this year but how much of that is on the OC is hard to say.

But I credit Fleck in that he is not afraid to pull the trigger if HE feels change is needed. Regardless of whether it’s mid season or not. Why change before a bowl game? Well once you decide it, why wait? I like that. Fleck did it with the DC a while back and the defense immediately improved.

Be decisive. Make the change for better or worse instead of stringing people along.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (11/30/2021 7:57:47 PM)

Yet he’s sticking with Morgan….

Rumor I heard is Sanford did the same thing with his last job at Utah St. OC with Love at QB (QB screwed the pooch). 2018 before Sanford (32 TD 6 INT), 2019 with Sanford (20 TD 17 INT)

Mister Ed -> RE: Gopher Football (12/3/2021 8:11:24 AM)

Looks like Gophers football coach P.J. Fleck is getting the old band back together.

Fleck is planning to bring back Kirk Ciarrocca as the team's offensive coordinator, a source with knowledge of the situation confirmed to the Star Tribune on Thursday night. Ciarrocca, who was the Gophers offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach from 2017 through 2019, would replace Mike Sanford Jr., who was informed Monday he would not be returning to the team in 2022.

Cool, the offense was pretty good before he left.

David Levine -> RE: Gopher Football (12/3/2021 10:49:49 AM)

Ciarrocca was Fleck's offensive coordinator at Western Michigan for four seasons before following him to Minnesota, where Ciarrocca led the Gophers' offense for three years. His tenure culminated in a record-breaking 2019 season that saw the Gophers record the program's first 11-win season since 1904 thanks in large part to an offense that ranked 21st in the country in scoring offense, averaging 34.1 points per game.

Ciarrocca left at the end of 2019 to take the same position at Penn State, citing a desire to be closer to family in the Pennsylvania area. He was fired after one season in State College. The Nittany Lions started the season 0-5 before winning their final four games. They finished the year ranked 37th in total offense (430.3 yards per game) and 54th in scoring offense (29.8 points per game). Ciarrocca spent the 2021 season as an offensive analyst at West Virginia.

Rumors of a contentious split with Minnesota cast doubt on a possible return to the Twin Cities after the firing of Mike Sanford Jr., but perhaps time heals all wounds. No one will be more excited about his hiring than quarterback Tanner Morgan, who opted to come back next season for a sixth and final year. Morgan struggled mightily in two seasons under Sanford, failing to recapture the magic of his 2019 season. With Ciarrocca at the helm, Morgan set single-season school records for passing yards (3,253), passing touchdowns (30), completion percentage (66.0%), passing yards per game (250.2), and pass efficiency rating (178.7).

In addition to Morgan, the Gophers are also bringing back Mohamed Ibrahim, who was named Big Ten Running Back of the Year in 2020 before suffering a season-ending lower leg injury this year. The team is awaiting decisions from wide receiver Chris Autman-Bell and offensive linemen Blaise Andries and John Michael Schmitz, all of whom have an extra year of eligibility.

As far as Matt Simon is concerned, it is assumed he will retain his position as co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach. Insiders are reporting that he is on board with the decision to bring back Ciarrocca, but we’ll see if another program tries to poach him this offseason.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (12/3/2021 12:02:08 PM)

The question is will he be in place for the bowl game.

Mister Ed -> RE: Gopher Football (12/6/2021 8:35:09 PM)

University of Minnesota football coach P.J. Fleck announced today the hiring of Kirk Ciarrocca. The veteran coach will serve as Minnesota's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, a role he previously held from 2017-19. The hire is pending approval of the Board of Regents.

Ciarrocca returns to the Twin Cities after being away for two years. He spent the 2020 season as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Penn State and served in a non-coaching role as an offensive analyst at West Virginia during the 2021 season.

In addition to previously working with Fleck at Minnesota, Ciarrocca was also Fleck's offensive coordinator at Western Michigan for four seasons. He has spent seven total seasons as an offensive coordinator under Coach Fleck and helped both schools produce record-setting numbers on offense.

Ciarrocca started at Minnesota on Monday, Dec. 6, but after conversations between Fleck and West Virginia Coach Neal Brown, he will not be coaching in the upcoming Guaranteed Rate Bowl. Matt Simon, who is Minnesota's wide receivers coach and co-offensive coordinator, will call the Minnesota offense during the Guaranteed Rate Bowl when the Gophers face the Mountaineers on December 28.

"We are excited to welcome Kirk back to Minnesota," said Fleck. "Kirk is one of the best offensive coordinators in the game, but he is also a tremendous person. We have a long professional history of working together, and I look forward to reuniting with him.

"Coach Brown and I have known each other for a long time and have a great relationship," said Fleck. "With Kirk having worked at both schools (Minnesota from 2017-2019 and West Virginia in 2021), we both agreed to not have Kirk coach in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl with his knowledge of both teams personnel. When we made the decision to hire Kirk, we did not yet know our bowl opponent. Coach Brown and I both thought this would be best to avoid any awkwardness for both sets of student-athletes. It's the right thing to do."

Ciarrocca coordinated some of the best offenses in Minnesota's history during his first stint in Maroon and Gold.

In 2019, the Gophers averaged 432 yards per game (fourth most in school history in the modern era) and 34.1 points per game (third most in school history in the modern era). That same year, Minnesota rushed for 25 touchdowns and threw for 31 touchdowns, which was the first time in school history that the Gophers reached both of those numbers in the same season.

Ciarrocca was named one of 15 semifinalists for the Broyles Award in 2019 (presented annually to the best assistant coach in college football) as Minnesota joined LSU and Alabama and the only schools in the nation to produce two 1,000-yard receivers (Tyler Johnson and Rashod Bateman) and a 1,000-yard rusher (Rodney Smith).

He also coached quarterback Tanner Morgan, who set school single-season records in passing yards (3,253), touchdown passes (30), completion percentage (66.0%), passing yards per game (250.2), touchdown-interception ratio (4.28) and passing efficiency rating (178.7). Morgan would be named All-Big Ten Second Team and was a finalist for The Manning Award and a semifinalist for the Davey O'Brien Award.

The Gophers combined to pass for 51 touchdowns from 2018-2019, which is the most in school history in a two-year span. Minnesota scored 105 total touchdowns in 26 games during those two-years, which was the most since it scored 106 in 25 games from 2005-06. In addition, Minnesota punted only 93 times during the two-year stretch, which was the fewest since it also punted 93 times in 2005-06.

Ciarrocca spent the 2020 season at Penn State, which was drastically affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. Despite the irregularities of the season, Ciarrocca led one of the most balanced and efficient offenses in the Big Ten. The Nittany Lions ranked second in the conference in total offense (430.3 yards per game), third in scoring (29.8 points per game), fourth in passing (256.0 yards per game) and fifth in rushing (174.3 yards per game).

Ciarrocca first came to Minnesota in 2017 after serving as the offensive coordinator at Western Michigan since 2013-16. The Broncos thrived under Ciarrocca in 2016, as they averaged 41.57 points per game (ninth most in the nation) and set program records in points (582), total yards (6,737) and touchdowns (75). This came after setting records in the same categories in 2015.

Even though I hate it, I get why Morgan is coming back. Why the hell is Autman-Bell though? I get that he didn't have a great year but he should be riding the Johnson/Bateman wagon IMO.

35/490/6 may not get him drafted unless he blows up at the combine.

He's probably hoping that Ciarrocca brings back a high(er) powered passing offense and can get Morgan back to respectable levels.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (12/14/2021 3:19:27 PM)

Not great by any means but if you looked at Bateman's breakdown of attempts to stats in 2019, I bet it's not far off and A-B was always touted as the better athlete. Glad to have him back that one just surprises me.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Football (12/28/2021 10:58:51 PM)

This WV quarterback is awful. Should be blitzing a lot more.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (12/29/2021 9:49:58 AM)

Ugly win, but a bowl win none the less. Should have been a more lopsided win, the Gophers propensity to shoot themselves in the foot and one of the worst fields I've ever seen didn't allow that to happen. Our vaunted O line continues to leave me expecting a lot more than they showed. I get it. These guys are massive and that alone allows for success running the football. They rarely play with an edge or impose their will on smaller defensive fronts. Last night, they won the line of scrimmage for most of the game, but within the game WV had stretches where they just flat out beat the Gophers O line to make big defensive plays.

The Gophers will have to replace some key defensive players next year, but at least they have Justin Wally on the corner for the next two years. That kid is a future NFL starter.

Karl Juhnke -> RE: Gopher Football (12/29/2021 9:58:55 AM)

I loved the TD by Faalele. Credit to Fleck for giving the young man some publicity and some fun as a send off. It’s the kind of thing that teams rally around. And it will be a national talker in an otherwise rather drab game. Brilliant move.
