Really, Wisconsin?
You HAD to score 83?
Really?

The BCS just took margin of victory out of their calculations, too.

I like Jeff Horton a lot -- he seems like a good man. Same with Adam Weber. It's just too bad neither of them are all that great in their respective positions on a Big 10 team. But I did very much like to see that win today.

I couldn't agree with this more. I've got a lot of angst for this team, and the year they've had, but you are right. Horton seemed down right giddy after the game. Good for your dude, after all that's happened, you deserve it.

And Weber, I may not have like some of the passes you've thrown, but I would love for you to make it to the next level and be the next Brady.

CHAMPAIGN, ILL. - Curtis Hughes hoisted the jug over his head and soaked his coach with the Gatorade inside. Brandon Kirksey jumped into the stands with his family, shouted the Minnesota Rouser with exaggerated brio, then swan-dove into a mosh pit of cheering teammates. Tight ends coach Derek Lewis, tears streaming down his cheeks, hugged player after player.
The whole maroon-and-white mass moved into the locker room, where pandemonium reigned. This wasn't a celebration, it was a demolition, a TNT keg ignited under a season's worth of calamity and disappointment.
"Everybody is so happy, so emotional," said running back DeLeon Eskridge, who provided the catalyst Saturday with three touchdowns, the last one coming with only 16 seconds remaining to cap Minnesota's fourth-quarter rally and deliver a startling 38-34 victory over Illinois. "It's good to see the coaches crying."
Joy is an emotion the Gophers had not felt this season, having gone more than two months since their only other victory back on Sept. 2. And that made the euphoria all the more intense for a team that has been booed, criticized and mocked, its coach fired and its quarterback harangued through a 1-9 season.
"We've got heart, that's all I can tell you. No matter what, we've got tremendous pride," said Troy Stoudermire, whose 90-yard kickoff return to the Illinois 4 sparked the Gophers' charge from a 10-point deficit with only eight minutes to play. "It's not like we ever go out there and lay down, let teams run over us. We play hard, every game, and we definitely deserve this win."

Great stuff. I'm not gonna apologize for my 2-9 team celebrating like they won a national championship.
On every bad team there are many many great kids. This group hasn't deserved all the pain they have endured.
I know what it feels like. And I know where their emotion came from yesterday. Good for them and good for Horton.

I found it interesting today when they said that Weber has been sacked more then any other QB this year. I knew he hasn't had much time back there most of the year, but to be leading in number of times sacked isn't good and record shows it

Huh?

llinois then had its two chances to finish the Gophers, and came up with neither.
First Weber tried to hit Gray — also one of the Gophers' leading receivers — but instead found defensive back Tavon Wilson. Gray hit Wilson, knocking the ball away.
Then, with the ball at Illinois' 6-yard line, Weber tried to force a pass to Da'Jon McKnight that defensive back Travon Bellamy had two hands on but dropped.
Finally, from the 2, Eskridge rescued the Gophers, slicing through the left side of his line and into the end zone.
Weber, who said during the week that he understood fans' calls for more Gray, was 20 of 26 for 225 yards and two TDs. He was seldom pressured by the Fighting Illini and wasn't sacked.
Zook credited Minnesota's protection, noting Weber has been sacked a relatively low 15 times this season. But defensive coordinator Vic Koenning said his defense has played flat two weeks running

That was coming into the game.

Is 15 a lot of sacks over 10 games? Or 11 games, for that matter? Jim, you said he's been sacked more than any other QB this year. I find it hard to believe 15 is "more than any other QB" this year. But maybe?

That is what the announcers said during the game

Jim Frenette -> RE: Gopher Football (11/24/2010 10:22:15 AM)

Article in paper today had Maturi in San Diego possibly talking to the San Diego St coach. I really didn't think they had a power house team. Can a no name come in and actually recruit up here?

Just looked them up and they did play TCU and Utah to close games. But rest of conference is weak

http://espn.go.com/college-football/team/_/id/21/san-diego-state-aztecs

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Football (11/24/2010 10:41:05 AM)

I'm surprised Maturi would be talking to him. because I thought they hired a scouting service to find their guy. I suppose it's possible that they've narrowed the field to a handful and now Maturi is personally interviewing the finalists.

Jim Frenette -> RE: Gopher Football (11/24/2010 10:51:03 AM)

He did hire a service and they put a list together that they have checked out. It will still be up to Maturi and Bruniks for final say

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Football (11/24/2010 10:58:08 AM)

So they've already narrowed it down to just a few? I assumed it would take quite a bit longer.

Not necessarily.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (11/24/2010 11:22:02 AM)

If Brady Hoke is a finalist, color me unimpressed.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (11/24/2010 3:13:02 PM)

Me too.  So much for the "big name" guy we heard about them trying to lure [&o]

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Football (11/24/2010 4:36:24 PM)

Maybe this search company specializes in the unknown guy...aka HIRED CHEAPLY

drew -> RE: Gopher Football (11/24/2010 6:25:04 PM)

Hoke has actually turned around two pathetic programs in Ball St. and SDSU and made them respectable.  I don't know if he could do the same here, but his track record so far hasn't been too bad.  I think we need a guy that knows how to build a program up, this isn't going to be a 1 year turnaround.  If we don't hire him, he will be moving to a bigger school soon, IMO.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (11/24/2010 7:56:37 PM)

Sounds a lot like Glen Mason [>:]

drew -> RE: Gopher Football (11/24/2010 8:12:45 PM)

That could be true JJ.  Although we found out Mason was a helluva lot better than Brew, I still don't miss Mason!

So you are looking for respectable? I want a winner

Hoke is making about $650K right now so it looks like Maturi was lieing to us saying it isn't a money problem

drew -> RE: Gopher Football (11/25/2010 10:40:35 AM)

Jim, respectable is about 5 steps up from where we are right now.  He took SDSU from 2-10 the year before he was there, 4-8 last year, and 7-4 so far this year.  They've lost to BYU, Missouri, Utah, and TCU all by five points or less.  It seems to me he's got it going in the right direction.  He did the same thing at Ball St. before going to San Diego.

I agree with you though, I want a winning program.  I think this guy can get it done, he knows how to take programs from the gutter and build them up.  We need a guy who knows how to take a program from the basement and move it up, and Hoke has already done that with two programs.

Jim Frenette -> RE: Gopher Football (11/25/2010 11:42:55 AM)

Drew losing to BYU is good as they aren't very good this year. Brewster's second year he started out 7-0 also so we can't go by what is accomplished at SDSU this year.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (11/26/2010 10:19:11 PM)

Hoke had a 6 year losing record at Ball State. He finally broke through in his 6th year and won the MAC. Now he has a 7th and a 5th place finish in the Mountain West. As I said before; color me unimpressed. Troy Calhoun and Kevin Sumlin are both 1000X better candidates than Brady Hoke.

Supposedly, one of the advantages of hiring him is that he can bring essentially his entire coaching staff here from San Diego State. I don't know enough about him or the program to have an opinion.

Is Calhoun the coach of AF? If so, I don't think that offense will work in the Big 10

Corleone -> RE: Gopher Football (11/27/2010 5:40:41 PM)

Helluva win for the Gophers.  Kirk Ferentz with possibly the douchiest thing I've ever seen on taking that last time out.

David Levine -> RE: Gopher Football (11/27/2010 5:40:42 PM)

Congrats to the Gophers - finishing with 2 straight wins, getting their first TCF win and taking Floyd.

Just goes to show you how bad Brewster was.
