So now Al Davis takes away play calling duties away from his OC. He couldn't just tell his new HC to do that? Why anyone would work for him I have no idea

I disagree

I would give each 3 games to see what they can do.  Stanton is no more guaranteed than Culpepper.

But Stanton's your young, developed guy.  I don't see Culpepper as a longterm answer, personally.  So you may as well see if you have an longterm answer on the roster.

JMO.
In the NFL you can't plan 5 years into the future.

Over the next 3 years Culpepper has just as much of a chance to lead a team as Stanton - who has never proved a thing.  Far more young QBs fail than succeed.  What are the % of 2nd round QBs that develop into solid starters?

Brian Brohm    Packers    Louisville
Chad Henne    Dolphins    Michigan
Kevin Kolb    Eagles    Houston
John Beck    Dolphins    Brigham Young
Drew Stanton    Lions    Michigan State
Kellen Clemens    Jets    Oregon
Tarvaris Jackson    Vikings    Alabama State
Drew Brees    Chargers    Purdue
Quincy Carter    Cowboys    Georgia
Marques Tuiasosopo    Raiders    Washington
Shaun King    Buccaneers    Tulane
Charlie Batch    Lions    Eastern Michigan
Jake Plummer    Cardinals    Arizona State
Tony Banks    Rams    Michigan State
Todd Collins    Bills    Michigan
Kordell Stewart    Steelers    Colorado

Going back the last dozen years I see one guy clearly better, a couple of INcs, and a whole lot of dreck.

Let them both get good time and the best man wins.

djskillz -> RE: Stupid fines (11/12/2008 9:34:26 AM)

Detroit is 0-9.  It's not like they're contending.

Stanton COULD be a qb for them for 10-12 years.  Daunte can't.  That's why you see if Stanton's the guy or not IMO.

Don T in CO -> RE: Stupid fines (11/12/2008 10:05:10 AM)

Then there’s a couple of 23-year-old rookies — Joe Flacco in Baltimore and Matt Ryan in Atlanta — who have gone a combined 12-6 (6-3 each). Both teams already have surpassed their victory totals of a season ago, so the race for Offensive Rookie of the Year is still very much on.
If it holds up for the entire season, the combined winning percentage of Flacco and Ryan (.667) would be the best by two rookies in the same season since the Super Bowl era began in 1966. The best up to this point came in 1983 when a couple of current Hall of Famers — John Elway and Dan Marino — went a combined 11-8 (.579). Next best came in 1979 when Steve Fuller and Phil Simms went 12-11 (.522).

Contending this year has nothing to do with it.

Chances are real slim that Stanton will be a 10 year starting QB

Again, look at the facts instead of wishes.

In the NFL teams are geared for 3-5 years MAX, not 10-12.  Neither guy has a great shot at being a Pro Bowl QB.  Both have about an equal chance of being good for the next 5 years.

2nd ROUND QBs

I'm not saying there's a "good chance" for him to do that.  But he's the guy they drafted that highly, he's got talent, and they should see what he has.  Playing a washed up guy out of retirement instead of him in a lost season is just a waste of a 2nd rd pick.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Stupid fines (11/12/2008 12:21:36 PM)

I dislike Daunte as a QB but it makes more sense to go with him IMO.  Stanton is a never was at this point.  At least Daunte's done it before.  He's also young enough that if he can get to his prime form he can give you some solid years.  They can always battle it out in TC but at least see if DC is back to his former self.  They have nothing else to lose at this point besides 7 more games.

I agree...but frankly, I hope they play Daunte through the Vikings game on Dec 7.  Then he can fumble 16 times and give us the easy win!

Other than that...they should start Stanton.

How is Stanton a "never was" at this point?  He's never even gotten a chance yet, and he's a 2nd rd pick with talent.

He was hurt for almost the entire season one of his 2 previous years in the league as well.  I think Bill Cowher is exactly right to keep harping on this one; START STANTON!

Although Scott, you're right; I welcome Daunte against us.  [;)]

NFL Fines Randy Moss $20K
Mon Nov 10, 2008

The Boston Globe reports the NFL has fined New England Patriots WR Randy Moss $20,000 for comments he made regarding the officiating following the Patriots' 18-15 loss to the Colts last Sunday night. Moss wasn't talking after yesterday's win over the Bills, but chances are he's not too happy, considering his comments were fairly innocuous. In fact, Moss started his comments last week by saying, "This is one of those funny games where you really got to watch what you say because fines will be out on Wednesday, so I'll leave it at that." But he didn't leave it at that, answering another question with a response that included saying there were some "real iffy calls out there." "I think a lot of guys are really down just for the fact that you let a game like this slip," said Moss. "Like I said earlier, when things happen you got to watch what you say. Guys don't want to get fined. There were some real iffy calls out there, and it's just some of the things that you wished wouldn't have happened. Good calls and bad calls are part of the game, so you got to live and die with them." NFL spokesman Greg Aiello confirmed it was the "iffy calls" characterization that drew the league's attention - and apparently ire.
What bull

Who died and appointed them grand pubah?

They are so good that a player can't even say a call was "iffy".

Please

The double standards in this league are amazing

Looks like the NFL backed off this one as well. What a mess the NFL is under Roger in my estimation. Mr. Tow the line is having problems with zero tolerance, which is why you should never have zero tolerance policies if you want to incorporate extentuating circumstances into the equaision.

I am with Joey Porter, explain to me again, how Matt Jones is allowed to play, quite the appeal process.[&o]

Never has been was probably a better way to put it.

djskillz -> RE: Stupid fines (11/12/2008 4:06:00 PM)

I guess I'll put it this way; would you have been pissed if TJack never got a single start after all that we invested to get him?

I know I would.  And the Lions invested more in Stanton (higher pick) than we did in TJack.

He deserves a full chance IMO, especially on an 0-9 team.

Did they trade two picks to move up to that pick and select Stanton?

I understand your point and agree that Stanton should be given a shot on an 0-9 team.  Culpepper wont be up to speed for weeks if he works hard at studying (and that has never been one of his strong points), so you may as well see what you have...

One thing though...they wont.  If they do...they will look like total morons for signing Culpepper and then starting an untested QB instead.  Pep will have to suck for a while first as the starter.

Easy E -> RE: Stupid fines (11/12/2008 5:26:28 PM)

I think only the Lions could take a guy right off the street and start him. I don't care how untested the young kid is, he has actually been in camp and read the playbook.

You normally sign a guy and take a week to get him up to speed. They are setting Daunte up to fail, but it's the Lions so it's not suprising.

Good grief! Clearly Madden is assisting the NFL Network on their over-dramatized commercials.

-- Rice Rips Gruden -- Fri Jul 27, 2007 The Tampa Tribune reports hours after the Buccaneers cut the three-time Pro Bowl defensive end, DE Simeon Rice reflected on his six years in Tampa and sharply questioned the sincerity of HC Jon Gruden. "He's the phoniest [expletive] in the world," said Rice, who helped the Gruden-led 2002 Bucs to a Super Bowl title and registered 69.5 sacks in his six years in Tampa. "Jon Gruden didn't have the decency, after all these years and all we've been through together, to talk to me face to face. I know he's happy today." GM Bruce Allen informed Rice of his release on reporting day after the 33-year-old veteran failed a club physical. Rice acknowledged he is not fully recovered from surgery to repair an injured left shoulder that limited him to eight starts last year. "The only fall-off year I had came when I was hurt," he said. "I came here for a million dollars in 2001. I took a pay cut to come to Tampa just to show the world what I could do, and I'm going to come back full throttle. I'm still not 100 percent. I played two games last year with one arm and I'm not right yet. If another team out there respects me, I'll be right in three or four weeks. "I'm the most consistent thing they ever had in Tampa. I'm excited about the future, because I believe in me. I always bet on black, baby. The next step is to let my body heal up and then I'll be a maniac. I'm an ageless wonder." Rice said he was heading back to his native Chicago to complete his rehab before seeking a new employer.

Daunte should have sat for a month to learn the system and players.  What he did, even as mediocre as it was, was amazing considering not only was it his first week with the pu**ies, it was his first week PERIOD this year in football.

Saying, like Brady in the Super Bowl, if he had of been doing that all game they would have won in regulation.

I saw a feature on sports center regarding this. I enjoyed when Joe was down on the sideline in the second half coaching nick on footwork, then they interviewed the coach about it. The coach said,"We don't want Dads on the sideline coaching their kid so we made a new rule if you are a former 3time Super Bowl MVP, you can come down and coach your kid, but that is the only exception."[&:]

I can't believe Wayne's kid didn't like to skate. I know SMFan, Scott's heart is torn out over the thought of this as well. Our boys from questionable genes gave it a run, if I only could have given mine 1% of what The Great One could have offered in the way of insite.....Oh well.
