Brett Favre 2.0

Or is Romo 2.0 and Cutler 3.0?

Romo is Brett Favre without the toughness and weaker physically

As for Cutler, he takes way too much heat on this board.

25 TDs
18 INTs
11 sacks
4500 yards

He will be better next year when Denver re-establishes their running game.  They threw way too much this year.

I would take him in a heartbeat over Jackson.

I will say that Cutler wore down and wasn't not as good the last 3 games.  But to say Jackson is better than him first Jackson would have to start 16 games and continue to produce like he has in December.

Give Jay Cutler a RB like Peterson instead of his top guy who couldn't even break 400 yards rushing and see the results.

Similarly, if you put Jackson on the Broncos and asked him to throw the ball 600 times in one year what would be the result?

David Levine -> RE: RE:NFL News (12/29/2008 2:04:21 PM)

Cutler is very talented, but right now he has all the warts of Brett Favre.

He throws every pass as hard as he can, he makes a lot of bad throws for picks - and a lot of them are because he thinks he can make them. And he's yet to prove he's a winner - guy hasn't been on a winning team since High School.

And comparing what he has to Jackson, let's not forget he has better WRs, a better O-Line and a better offensive coordinator.

I don't think anyone has said that Jackson is better than Cutler right now, but I threw out that it could still happen.

Jake Carlson -> RE: RE:NFL News (12/29/2008 2:16:03 PM)

IMO, Cutler is the equivalent of Drew Bledsoe or even a poor-man's version of Dan Fouts/Warren Moon.  He'll put up some quality numbers and at times even gaudy stats, but at the end of his career his won-loss record will be close to or below .500.  There's no doubt the guy has certain talents but I'm not convinced that leading a team to be a consistent winner is one of them.

I can't compare Jackson to ANYONE until he starts for a full season.

Let's see what he can do for a full year with teams gameplanning against him.  Has even started 5 games in a row yet?

Jackson has to become a dependable starter for an entire year before we can claim he is better than Vince Young, forget about Cutler.

Beat the Eagles and I will be very impressed.

Another nice blog article by Mark Craig-

http://blogs2.startribune.com/blogs/nfl/2008/12/29/when-does-shanahan-get-a-hot-seat/

The 2008 NFL season had many memorable rags-to-riches stories, but it also has had some collapses that will be remembered for years to come.
The Jets went from 8-3 and a convincing victory in Tennessee to 9-7, out of the playoffs and looking for a new head coach. The Bucs went from 9-3 to 9-7, out of the playoffs and wondering if Monte Kiffin mailed it in on his game preparation since announcing he was leaving after the season to join his son at the University of Tennessee. The Cowboys went from preseason Super Bowl favorites (yeah, I picked them, too) to 4-1 to 9-7, out of the playoffs and wondering where to turn next. (Jerry Jones kept saying Wade Phillips won’t be fired, but I’ll believe it when I see him still on the sideline for next year’s season opener).

But the biggest choke job in the league was executed by Mike Shanahan and the Denver Broncos. They became the first team since division play began in 1967 to lose a three-game lead with three to play. They were 8-5 when the Chargers were 5-8. Yet they still blew it.

...

John Childress -> RE: RE:NFL News (12/29/2008 5:37:12 PM)

Don

I am SHOCKED you picked the Cowboys to do anything.  If they couldn't go last year when they had HFA there was no way those chokers were going this year.

How about Brett Favre choking so bad his coach got fired!

woa

TJACK has NO WR like Brandon Marshall !

Eddie Royal is similar to Berrian, but better after the catch.

Add Brandon Marshall to the Vikes and they would have a WR corps.  Or you could had Housh or Jennings and they would be set.  I just think a #1 might be hard to find.

Guest -> RE: RE:NFL News (12/29/2008 10:44:51 PM)

How's that Favre for MVP looking?

marty -> RE: RE:NFL News (12/30/2008 5:17:02 AM)

After the Jets went into Tennessee and won I thought Favre had a shot.  After I stated that in here, his season fell apart.  I was surprised the Jets let go of Mangini.  Are we to assume they're keeping Favre for next year ?

I still think the Packers win 3 more games had they kept Favre.  The Packers were 0-8 in close games in the 4th quarter, I think Favre wins at least 3 of them.  Plus I think he would have gotten them more early leads instead of being 24th in 1st quarter scoring.   Three more wins would have put the Pack at 9-7, and they MIGHT have won the division had they had the tiebreakers over Minnesota.

As a Viking fan, I'm GLAD the Packers let go of Favre to help Minnesota arrive at this window of opportunity.

John Childress -> RE: RE:NFL News (12/30/2008 7:30:12 AM)

Favre leaving did nothing for the Vikings.

He would not have made one bit of difference in Green Bay and may have faded earlier.  He is one of the most overrated QBs in history.  He averaged over 20 INTs a year for his last 6 seasons.  He had back to back seasons with QB ratings of 70 and 72 - if he was anyone else he would have been benched the second year.

20 INTs in his last 10 playoff games.

Yeah, he played hurt and he also hurt his team with his play.

The Jets are stupid enough to fire their coach just to appease Favre.  Did the old fool owner even watch the Jets last 4 games?  Favre IS the problem.

Then after each pick he went back to his faking ass grabbing his arm like he was hurt.  He is a complete fraud - glad he is going down in flames.

Saw this on another site:

quote:

When referee Ed Hochuli reversed the ruling on the field that Packer running back Ryan Grant had scored an 80-yard touchdown run in the third quarter Sunday against the Detroit Lions - and instead had just a 21-yard gain - Grant lost $1.35 million.

Grant could have earned a $1.5 million bonus if he reached 1,250 yards for the season. Instead, he earned $500,000 for finishing with 1,203. Grant also could have earned another $600,000 for placing in the top five among NFC rushers. Grant finished sixth - 35 yards behind the Bears' Matt Forte - to pocket $150,000.

Grant said one of the game officials encouraged him to keep going on the run.

"I've been playing football a long time; I run to the whistle," Grant said. "I saw the ref running with me, saying 'Grant, you weren't down, keep running.' When I got to the end zone he said, 'Good job, you weren't down.' I was, like, 'There you go.' "

First of all - wow - that's a big chunk of change he missed out on.

Second - I had no idea that refs yelled encouragement to players on the field.   Does this sound legitimate to anyone?   Are they supposed to give clues to a player and help them out?

Yeah, that was Mark Craig picking the Cowboys, not me.  Sorry, I should have used quotes or italicized the quoted portions of the article to be more clear.

Heck a referee patted Favre on the butt last year

NFL Talk With the Commissioner

[image]http://media.scout.com/Media/Image/47/471102.jpg[/image]

Roger Goodell (J.Daniel/Getty Images)

By NFL Press Release
Posted Dec 29, 2008

Find out what NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell had to say about the playoffs, an 18-game season, instant replay and the Collective Bargaining Agreement in these excerpts from his Sunday press conference at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore.

On how he sees teams playing guys vs. not playing guys in the final week of the regular season:
Commissioner Goodell: I actually don’t think it’s been a big issue this year. It was an issue that we spent a great deal of time discussing in the offseason last year. I think we owe the fans competitive football, and I think our players should play when they’re capable of playing. I really go back to the Giants-Patriots game last year in the regular season. Obviously, the Patriots were going for an undefeated season, but the Giants had no consequences. But it created that momentum, which may have started their move toward the Super Bowl and ultimately winning the Super Bowl. I think coaches and teams now are thinking more about getting that momentum going into the playoffs, and I think that’s a good thing for our fans.

On whether an injury to Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger would change that:
Injuries are part of the game. They happen. They’re unfortunate. Hopefully it’s not serious, and he’ll be in there for the playoffs.

On if there is any thought about reseeding the playoffs and maybe having a Wild Card team hosting a playoff game:
We talked an awful lot about that in the Competition Committee with the membership last year. Frankly, they all felt that winning the division was the No. 1 objective when you come into a season, and that should be the highest priority. I think that we’ll continue on with that system at least for the foreseeable future.

On whether there has been any thought to increasing the number of playoff teams:
There have been proposals from time to time. There’s a great deal of resistance to that, also, so I don’t see any great movement in that area.

On what the prospect of an 18-game schedule would mean for teams who are in a late-season position with no hope for the playoffs:
Who knows? They might get on a win streak.

On if he doesn’t think 16 games is enough:
I think most fans would tell you that they’d like to see more football, and that’s what we find. It’s really not just an extension. It’s a reduction of the preseason and a potential increase of the regular season. I think people, if they had the opportunity to see more regular season and less preseason, they’d take that option.

On how instant replay has changed from just looking at it into a frame-by-frame, high definition look:
That’s the way the game is. We didn’t have the high def when instant replay came into the league. That’s the reality of what happens. You get more angles. You get better angles, and you get a much more clear picture. So, you’re able to determine things now that you couldn’t determine 10 years ago or 20 years ago.

On if there has been thought about moving replay calls to someone in the booth:
We had that system once. From time to time, you hear that. We’ve had different modifications of the system, but it was felt that the referee on the field who has all the information should make the ultimate decision and the decision should stay down there. That’s ultimately where the Competition Committee and the clubs came out.

On whether he sees any further changes in the replay system for the playoffs, particularly the change talked about regarding a second consultation:
That’s in effect. That has been in effect for the remainder of the regular season and the postseason. I don’t see anything more, no, for this postseason. But we will obviously, as we do every year, go back and look at instant replay and see if there are any other modifications that make sense.

On what the latest news is on the Collective Bargaining Agreement:
They’re going through the process of selecting the new leader of the NFLPA. We are doing our work internally to make sure we’re prepared for the negotiation when they’re ready. We’ll start those negotiations whenever they’re prepared. I’m presuming they probably won’t start until the summer, at least.

Mangini Wasn't Behind Favre's Acquisition
Tue Dec 30, 2008

The New York Daily News reports former Jets HC Eric Mangini was not behind the team's acquisition of QB Brett Favre last summer. Although he publicly supported the acquisition of the future Hall of Fame quarterback, Mangini expressed concerns at the time about acquiring Favre but adjusted the entire offense and tried to make it work. In the end, Favre contributed to the late-season slide with nine interceptions and only two touchdown passes in the final five games. That doomed Mangini.  [sm=WAVE2.gif]

Pro Bowl to be Played Before Super Bowl in 2010
Mon Dec 29, 2008

ESPN reports the Pro Bowl will be played one week before the Super Bowl in 2010 and both games will be staged in Dolphin Stadium, a person directly involved in the decision told The Associated Press on Monday. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the NFL has not announced the move, but Hawaii's governor and Honolulu's mayor both confirmed the situation later Monday. "While I am disappointed the Pro Bowl likely will not be played in Hawaii in 2010, I respect the NFL's decision to play the post season all-star game in the same city as the Super Bowl, one week before the Super Bowl, on a one-year test basis," Hawaii Gov. Linda Lingle said in a statement.

Good luck having any of the Super Bowl players in the Pro Bowl....[&o]

That's an especially stupid idea. I realize no one cares about the Pro Bowl anymore since it happens after the season, but pretty much guaranteeing nobody from the 2 best teams appears in it won't help.

John Childress -> RE: NFL News (12/30/2008 3:49:49 PM)

You probably won't get any players from the top 4 teams as I could see a lot of players from the teams who lost the CG also bowing out due to "injury".

JETS head coach wish list

1. Cowher
2. Spags
3. Marty

No one wants the Lions spot!

I was just going to post the same.

The good thing is it will bring more "new blood" to the game, and people may actually watch it since that week before the SB blows.
