Larry Fitzgerald: I want to be a Cardinal
Mike Tulumello, Tribune
Larry Fitzgerald and Adrian Peterson battled to a 7-7 tie on Monday in front of a couple dozen Arizona high school students.

The Cardinals receiver and the NFL’s offensive rookie-of-the-year were playing a game of “financial football,” an NFL-themed money-management video game at the Phoenix Convention Center.

The game will be distributed to every high school in the state, according to officials from VISA, which is helping to sponsor the program.

The pair, often getting suggestions for answers from the students, took a stab at about a dozen financial questions and missed only one each.

Fitzgerald told the students that his first job was working as a ball boy for the Minnesota Vikings as a teenager.

“You get that first money and you just want to go spend it,” he said.

But his dad warned him to put his money away, so, “Every time I ever got money, I made sure I saved it.”

Fitzgerald said he still applies this principle to his life today.

That should come in handy if he can work out a new contract with the Cardinals.

Fitzgerald reached incentives this past season that would earn him about $16.5 million in the upcoming season. The club wants to work out a long-term deal that would lower this amount in the short term.

Talks are ongoing, but Fitzgerald says he hasn’t heard anything.

His name has come up in internet trade rumors; Fitzgerald hopes that’s all they are.

“I want to be a Cardinal. I enjoy it here. I love my teammates. I love working for the Bidwills.”

GROWING UP IN FOOTBALL

Working as a ball boy, Fitzgerald got to know the Vikings’ star receivers: Randy Moss and Chris Carter.

“Randy was always good to me."

“He was a great tipper. He used to give me $100, let me wash his BMW and let me drive it around before I had my license.”

Carter used to bring the teenaged Fitzgerald down to Florida to train with him in the summer.

Now, Fitzgerald is rooting for Carter to be voted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

“The things you saw him do on Sunday were not as important as the things he did on Monday, preparing his body, the film work he did all week, the community service he did all week,” Fitzgerald said. “The things that don’t get noticed are the greatest things about Chris.”

Voting is set for Saturday, at the media center at the Phoenix Convention Center.

DUE TO BREAK OUT

Fitzgerald says the Patriots’ playoff opponents have done a good job, so far, of taking Moss out of games.

“But you can only hold him down for so long. He’s always going to do his thing in terms of stretching the field.

I definitely think he’ll make some big plays,” Fitzgerald said.

Wow, that Stevens article is simply unbelievable.

Lynn G. -> RE: NFL News (1/29/2008 9:57:17 AM)

I agree Jeff.  That's a case of a guy getting seven or eight "second" chances simply because he's a good football player.  In reality, he's a criminal and a poor excuse for a man, and I hope people stop giving him another chance to be a big shot in the NFL.

The thing that kills me the most is the "mandatory 30 day sentences that are reduced".  Not those exact numbers but hopefully you get my point.  Unreal.  It makes me sick to my stomach.

And then these coaches that "vouch" for him.  They should be ashamed of themselves.

I wonder if Holmgren would have wanted his daughter to date him?

Who gives a pony's tail about Wes Welker?    Next story you read might show him at a high school prom party getting drunk with teenagers.  I only care about between the lines.

Anyone remember jackie sherrill?

Exactly.  "He's a great guy who is misunderstood.  He catches a lot of footballs for touchdowns, great role model".

Wow, Boston is one of the most miserable places on earth.  They would have to triple my salary to get me to live there.  After 10 years in Tampa, I don't think I could deal with the New England fog.

One of the responses, From Justin Miller: “If Pats fans are so smart, how come thier (sic) state allows (homosexual slur) to get married?”

Well mister Justin (making my family name look bad) Miller, probably because they are smart enough to realize that same sex couples marrying doesn't harm anyone at all and could find no good reasont to make it illegal?  Clearly, in that regard, they are smarter than you.

Not that I want to start a political argument here, but this is one of my biggest hates about republicans and conservatives.  The whole same sex marriage wedge issue.

Randy Moss Wants to Finish Career as a Patriot
Tue Jan 29, 2008

The Boston Globe reports WR Randy Moss is a free agent after the season, but he hopes to remain in New England. “I would love to finish my career [here] just for the fact of they have everything you want in a football organization," Moss said. "They handle things from the top, all the way to the bottom, and they do a good job of that. With Coach Belichick and his coaching staff, we have a lot of fun. The fun that we have it not on the field, it's in the locker room or hanging out at guys' houses and stuff like that. The team concept is not just on the field, it's outside the locker room. For me to be able to say that I would love to become a New England Patriot and finish my career here, that is something I can really believe in.”

Todd M -> RE: NFL News (1/30/2008 10:13:16 AM)

I'm going to punch Red in the head some day. [X(]

I've been holding on to a sliver of hope all this time that Randy would come "home" and help us get a ring. Especially after grabbing one this year (in all likelihood) and becoming a FA.

Having AD really helps. I don't want him to ever come close to FA. And a trade better be Walker-esque if we ever entertain the idea.

theman1970 -> RE: NFL News (1/30/2008 12:08:35 PM)

We will see what happens when it is time to talk contract.

I keep hoping this, too.  Vikings obviously have the cap space, need for a #1 WR etc., etc. but deep down I know there's no chance it's gonna happen with the current regime in charge.  I don't think this regime views him as the "character guy" they would go after.

Has anybody heard what's happened with the allegations made by the woman who claims he assaulted her a few weeks ago during the Pats' bye week?

Lynn G. -> RE: NFL News (1/30/2008 7:46:34 PM)

Dave - they extended the restraining order and will revisit the case after the Superbowl.  I think the extension is for another couple of weeks.

Dave M -> RE: NFL News (1/30/2008 8:05:53 PM)

Thanks, Lynn.  Hope he's not guilty of the offense/accusation.  I've alway been a huge fan of Randy Moss and have generally stayed firmly in his corner in bar-room arguments re: the "character" issue.  The traffic cop incident a few years ago (and this one if true) hasn't ever sat well with me, though.  I can handle squirting refs with a water bottle, mouthing off to corprate sponsors and even walking off the field in frustration with two seconds left in a game (the mooning incident in the 2005 GB playoff game one week later is my all-time favourite Vikings moment), but when it comes to assaulting abusing/people I can't support that.

At this point I'm still willing to leave it at "innocent until proved guilty," but to my point above, I don't think the current Vikings brain trust would look favourably on this one no matter how it turns out.  Also, there's the issue of Randy saying a couple of years ago the organization could basically go f*** itself (I paraphrase), odds are slim Randy's gonna be wearing Purple #84 (or any other number in a Vike uniform ever again).  [:@]

Lynn G. -> RE: NFL News (1/30/2008 8:12:37 PM)

I agree with everything you wrote Dave.  I remain a fan of his and want to see him get a ring, but I have no illusions that he'll ever be wearing Viking purple again.

"Guilt" really isn't yet an issue in this latest Randy Moss story.  He hasn't been charged with anything.  Leads me to believe that he didn't assault her.

From what I have heard, she got a minor injury to one of her fingers as a result of incidental contact.  Her lawyer threatened Randy with breaking this as a bad thing unless he paid $500,000.00.  Since the police didn't file any charges against him, I assume that it wasn't an assault or any form of abuse.  My guess is that this is exactly what Randy says, an attempt to get money from him.

Lynn G. -> RE: NFL News (1/31/2008 8:25:10 AM)

What's weird is that apparently they've been friends for 11 years, so you have to wonder if maybe he was showing signs of breaking away and she thought she better get one last payday before he leaves.  The fact that he hasn't been charged yet (and on something as simple as this the charges happen pretty fast) gives credence to his version of events.

Guest -> RE: NFL News (1/31/2008 8:55:46 AM)

I'm not familiar enough with the law, but why isn't something like this considered blackmail?
If her version is true, then he should be charged criminally.  If Randy's version is true, why wouldn't
she be charged with attempting to extort money?

It's a "he said she said", can't really be proved either way, but considering the current circumstances (SB distractions), might be (or have been) enough to get her (and her lawyer) a few $.
