Or get so much talent that even our coaches can't screw it up.

Billick was mediocre for years.  They pick Moss, suddenly he's some genius !

Duane Sampson -> RE: Da Bears (2/10/2010 8:57:57 AM)

The lid to my beer cooler knows more about offense than Chilly.

At least my cooler would know that Diet Pepsi Machine was double-covered....

Chicago Bears: Can Mike Martz save the Bears' offense?

Five years ago, Mike Martz was considered by some to be the top offensive mind in football. Oh, how times change. He was fired by the 49ers following the 2008 season and got the Bears job only after about a dozen people turned it down, fearful of head coach Lovie Smith's long-term status. Now, Martz is tasked with helping Jay Cutler find the form that led the Bears to trade multiple first-round picks for him only a season ago.

In some ways, the hiring of Martz is downright bizarre. Cutler's primary problems last season were his propensity for interceptions and his lack of protection behind a shoddy offensive line. Cutler threw a league-high 26 interceptions last year and got sacked a career-high 35 times. Martz has long encouraged his quarterbacks to play freely and not fear interceptions, and his focus on deep passing and multiple receivers leads to large numbers of sacks. Jon Kitna got sacked more than 50 times in each of his two years as a starter in Martz's offense. Considering the poor talent on the Bears' offensive line, Cutler will be hit a bunch next year, risking the health of the Bears' largest investment.

Martz's reputation has understandably taken a hit in recent seasons. His tenure as a head coach in St. Louis ended poorly; his Detroit teams never had good offenses; and in San Francisco, the ill-fated J.T. O'Sullivan experiment was a complete disaster. Still, while the Martz addition will not lead to a return of the Greatest Show on Turf, the offense should improve. The 49ers improved from the league's worst offense to a little below average in Martz's only season as the offensive coordinator. In Detroit, his offenses were below-average both seasons, but the Lions still played much better than the year before he arrived or the year after he left.

Martz is far from a panacea, but he should put Cutler in position to have some success. Martz's offenses run up a ton of negative plays, but he does allow his quarterbacks to attack down the field. Cutler has a strong arm that he was not free to use this season, because the Bears were so concerned about his being hit. Additionally, Martz uses running backs well in the passing game, and Matt Forte has proved to be an adept receiver. The Bears' offense will not be good next season, but it should be better.

Trekgeekscott -> RE: Da Bears (9/13/2010 9:20:38 AM)

I just wanted to say one thing about the Bears/Lions game yesterday.

Ok maybe more than one thing.

Lovie Smith is done for.  Even though they won, he made probably the dumbest coaching decision thus far this year.  4th and goal, and the Lions O wasn't moving the ball at all.  and instead of taking the points that would put them ahead with the FG, he goes for it.  Absolutely brutal call.  Bears Brass noticed that they barely, and luckily won against the Staffordless Lions....and it should be pointed out that they won because Calvin Johnson just lost the hold of the ball at the end.

Season opener at home against a team that has won just 2 of its last 32 games and you nearly blow it?

Bears will be lucky not to finish in last place.  But injuring Stafford may help them in that regard.

Truthfully - it wasn't even that. Johnson held onto it plenty long. Two feet and a butt down, and THEN puts the ball down. That is a really, really bad rule.

SoMnFan -> RE: Da Bears (9/13/2010 9:44:32 AM)

Detroit got screwed royally.
If that had happened to an elite team, the rule would be changed this morning.
Stupid, stupid, stuff.
You're in the end zone. Next move? You don't need a next move ... you're in the end zone. Ridiculous.

Lynn G. -> RE: Da Bears (9/13/2010 9:48:39 AM)

Yep. As soon as he got both feet down and had a firm hold on the ball, it should have been a touchdown and didn't matter what happened after that.

How many times has someone simply swiped a ball over the pylons and then ended up on the sideline with the ball flying away - - - and they call THAT a touchdown just because it crossed the plane? This "process" thing is nonsense.

SoMnFan -> RE: Da Bears (9/13/2010 9:52:33 AM)

Yep
Butt down.
In end zone.
Ball in hand.
Touchdown.

As you say ... ten times more than what has been given before.
used to take a swipe or a nose, or a sniff of the ball even touching the plane.
What a freaking joke.

Lynn G. -> RE: Da Bears (9/13/2010 10:06:45 AM)

Another example: What about the play where someone reaches across the line and touches the ball down in the endzone? Touchdown, even though the ball touches the ground before any other part of his body does on that side of the line.

I would be so livid if that call happened to the Vikings that I'd be firing letters off to everyone even remotely connected to the NFL. [8|]

I'm not following. Of course that's a touchdown.

The difference is in the Calvin Johnson play, the question was "did he ever fully have possession?" In your example, possession is already assumed and everything you describe comes after that fact.

John Childress -> RE: Da Bears (9/13/2010 9:45:22 PM)

It has been shown over and over

The call was right

The rule is bad

Yes. That's what I'm saying. And Calvin Johnson had it in his possession over the line much longer and more deliberately, yet they say it wasn't a touchdown because he put the ball on the ground when he went down.

In Johnson's example, not only did he have complete possession (he wasn't bobbling the ball in the least), he had two feet and a butt down before the ball touched the ground.

Todd M -> RE: Da Bears (9/14/2010 9:40:11 AM)

Let's look at it this way. If Johnson's catch had occurred at the one, and if while swinging his arm to the ground he would have broken the plane of the goal line, the proper call under the "second act" exception would have been touchdown.

Stupid NFL. Two feet and control = TD...KISS

Trekgeekscott -> RE: Da Bears (10/11/2010 10:08:20 AM)

Bears are 4-1.   the good news about this?  Lovie Smith likely will keep his job for a couple more years and the Bears will (despite what their record shows) continue to suck eggs.

marty -> RE: Da Bears (10/17/2010 11:39:31 PM)

As much as I think Lovie is a BETTER coach than Childress or McCarthy, I felt like he got outcoached against Seattle.

The Bears seemed to give up on the run, which is a trademark of Martz, and apparently Lovie isn't going to trump that. I hope they keep that up, it gives the Vikes a shot at the division.

TheGonz -> RE: Da Bears (10/29/2010 3:43:33 PM)

In a story you might have missed, the NFL announced on Wednesday that Washington Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall was named the NFC's Offensive Player of the Week for Week Seven of NFL action.

It looks like Jay Cutler will already have his little piece of the HOF. I read the HOF asked for Hall's game jersey. [&:]

marty -> RE: Da Bears (10/29/2010 6:26:52 PM)

I expected a slow start for the Bears, and they are actually doing BETTER than I thought they would.

I thought Cutler would take awhile to get used to Martz's system, wondered if they had good enough WRs, and thought Tice wouldn't get their OL to get until about midseason. I thought from about game 9 on, the Bears would be a tough team, and it was unfortunate the Vikes didn't play them early on.

I still had the Bears in 3rd place, but probably underestimated them. They still have the best coach in the division, although I thought Shanahan and Carroll outcoached him, but I think they are also very good coaches. I don't think much of McCarthy or Childress as HCs.

The Bears have NOT allowed over 23 points all season. Watching enough of their games the last few weeks, I now am starting to wonder if their OL will ever gel, if Cutler will improve, and if they'll commit to the run.

Looking at the Bears schedule, I didn't realize it was so brutal to close the season. I think this team is VERY unlikely to win the division. It's there for the Vikes or Packers to take. The Vikes win this week and they are right back in it. Lose, and I STILL think they have a chance.

It's either Vikes or Packers winning the division, and I think the Vikes are the better team. I'm not a big homer, I many times pick AGAINST the Vikes. The Packers just got lucky Harvin didn't get his feet down in bounds, or the game and momentum for the season would have went right to the Vikings. Hopefully, the win does NOT give the Pack a bunch of momentum where they now go on a nice run.

The Vikes are the BEST team in the division at running the ball, and I now think if they get the ball rolling, they CAN win the division. I wouldn't count the Bears out, they'll be hard to catch, but I think the Vikes can do it, just a long road ahead.

Martz offense will be useless in December and January in Chicago. Probably half of November likely game temps in the 30s and windy

Which means that their best chance to win a game in the second half of the season will be. . .

When they come to Minnesota to play us.

Andy Lowe -> RE: Da Bears (12/29/2010 11:05:56 AM)

Grrr, so I will eat a plate full of crow. I've been yapping for years that Cutler will never be a winner.

have to give him his due this year. he's done a great job, and finally shown why he's an elite talent. he is making some mind blowing throws this year!

That being said, I would still not trust him long term. I think it's been the perfect storm this year for Chicago.

Lynn G. -> RE: Da Bears (12/29/2010 11:09:22 AM)

I hope he has just one more good game in him. [:D]
