Bears | Briggs doesn't sign Mon, 16 Jul 2007 16:24:44 -0700 ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports the Chicago Bears and LB Lance Briggs did not agree to a contract before the deadline Monday, July 16, for franchise players to sign multi-year contracts. I hope he holds out now. 8)

Bears Could Still Deal Lance Briggs? The passing of the deadline renders LB Lance Briggs' threat to sit out the first 10 games of the season shaky at best. It cannot pressure the Bears toward a long-term deal, because one cannot be signed now, and simply costs Briggs a weekly check of more than $400,000. Briggs yet could be in the lineup by the season opener and could agree to sign the one-year deal in exchange for the Bears' promise not to place the franchise tag on him again next year if a long-term deal cannot be reached. The Bears still could deal Briggs before the trade deadline later this season. But his new team can't give him a long-term deal this season either, and there was little trade interest in Briggs during the off-season, including around the time of the draft. http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/football/bears/cs-070716bearsbriggs,1,1444500,print.story?coll=cs-home-headlines

All-Pro linebacker Briggs signs one-year tender offer Two-time Pro Bowl weakside linebacker Lance Briggs, who was unable this spring to reach a long-term deal with the Chicago Bears as a designated franchise player, on Wednesday agreed to sign the one-year qualifying offer of $7.206 million that accompanies the tag, and report to camp on Thursday. Chicago will advance Briggs, who had earlier threatened to sit out until the 10th week of the season, $1 million of the $7.206 million. More important, the Bears have agreed that they will not use a franchise marker in 2008 on Briggs, to again limit his mobility, provided that he participates in 75 percent of the defensive snaps this season. Briggs, 26, has averaged nearly 90 percent of the defensive snaps the past three years. So if Briggs remains healthy through the season, and reaches the same playing time levels that he has in recent seasons, Chicago will not be able to keep him off the unrestricted free agent market next spring. Lance Briggs Briggs Linebacker Chicago Bears Profile 2006 Season Stats Tot Solo Ast FF Sack Int 134 113 21 4 1 2 "Lance decided it was in his best interests, and those of the Bears, to play football in 2007, and to be in camp on time preparing to do so," agent Drew Rosenhaus said Monday evening. "He wants to create the most positive atmosphere possible for himself, and he did not want this to be a distraction to the team. It's a good compromise for everyone involved." A four-year veteran, Briggs has chafed much of the offseason at being designated as the Bears' franchise player. After rejecting a seven-year, $33 million contract extension last spring, Briggs had sought a long-term deal again in recent months. Bears officials, though, were steadfast in maintaining that they would not offer a multiple-year deal, and that Briggs' lone option was to sign the franchise tender. Chicago balked at a long-term deal for Briggs, in part because the Bears' organization has already committed $6 million-$7 million per year to five-time Pro Bowl middle linebacker Brian Urlacher. Although the Bears invested heavily to sign both starting cornerbacks, Nathan Vasher and Charles Tillman to long-term deals within the past month, the club did not place a similar priority on the linebacker position. The Bears' coaches also feel that a pair of young linebackers, second-year veteran Jamar Williams and rookie Michael Okwo, could soon be ready to move into the lineup. Both are projected as potential replacements for Briggs at weakside linebacker if he departs after the 2007 campaign. Rosenhaus said that his client considered accepting the same arrangement from the Bears -- a one-year deal with the promise that the franchise tag wouldn't be used again in '08 -- earlier in the spring. But Briggs held out some hope that a trade could be consummated, and the Bears did negotiate with the Washington Redskins on a deal in March and April. The two sides were unable, though, to consummate a trade. When he was in Chicago negotiating a contract for first-round tight end Greg Olsen three weeks ago, Rosenhaus re-opened dialogue with Chicago general manager Jerry Angelo about Briggs, and talks continued, finally resulting in Wednesday's accommodation. "Once we got beyond the July 16 deadline [for franchise players to sign multi-year deals]," Rosenhaus said, "this was the best option. At that point, the Bears couldn't sign Lance to a long-term contract, and neither could any other team that acquired him in a trade. And so we tried to make this work, because, under that scenario, he wanted to remain with the Bears. And it's been my experience that players who hold out from camp tend to not play as well. This allows Lance to have another great season, and then we'll see what happens." The agreement with Briggs means that just one of the original seven franchise players this year, New England cornerback Asante Samuel, does not have a contract. Three of the players -- Indianapolis defensive end Dwight Freeney (six years, $72 million), New Orleans defensive end Charles Grant (seven years, $63 million) and Detroit defensive tackle Cory Redding (seven years, $49 million), signed long-term contracts. In addition to Briggs, Cincinnati defensive end Justin Smith ($8.64 million) and Seattle kicker Josh Brown ($2.078 million) signed their one-year tenders. Neither Brown nor Smith elicited from their teams a stipulation precluding use of the franchise tag again in 2008. Debate between the Bears and Briggs grew heated at times this spring, with the linebacker telling ESPN.com at one point that he would never play for the team again. He eventually softened that stance, but then adopted the position that he would not report until the 10th week, which would still permit him to gain a season toward the pension plan. A former University of Arizona standout, Briggs was chosen by the Bears in the third round of the 2003 draft. He earned a starting job as a rookie, emerged by his third season as one of the NFL's top young weakside linebackers, and was chosen for the Pro Bowl in each of the past two seasons. In 64 games, Briggs, one of the game's best all-around weakside 'backers, has 441 tackles, 3 ½ sacks, six interceptions, 29 passes defensed, seven forced fumbles and three recoveries.

Watched the first half of the Bears/Colts tonight. Best moment: Jaws blathering over how much Rex Grossman has improved over last year after he made a simple roll out throw, outside the pocket. Kornholer was giving him greif about and the next play, guess what? Rex fumbled the snap. He also threw a pick. Recovered his own fumble later. Looks the the same Sexy Rexy to me! I can't what to see what our defense does to him this year!

Even though Jaws was loving up Grossman, he is head and shoulders more tolerable than Joe Theisman.

I really hope the Bears stubbornly stick with Grossman all year, cause that increases our chances of overtaking them in the division (pipe dream I know but I can dream, can't I?).

I don't believe at this point it is a pipedream Scott. I really think the Bears are going to take a step back and we will take a step up and arguebly last year head to head we were only a half step behind them. I think Green Bay's defense is going to be good. I think Detroit's offense is going to be above average(thank goodness they don't have a qb better than Kitna).

Though this isn't the Lions thread I have to say this about Mike Martz...If he could make Kurt Warner look good...What could he do with Jon Kitna?

Good point, I will give you this question to think about. What can Martz do with a qb who Holmgren gave up on? Two ways to look at it: Holmgren knows quarterbacks or he has no patience with any one that lacks above average natural ability.

Same O, Same O......Grossman had 59 yards, 1 INT and 3 fumbles. Grossman did run in one for a touchdown, but that was after Hester returned a kick and downed it in the redzone at the 24 yard line. Hester figured that even a blind squirrel could get a TD in from that distance.

 Bears Seek the Help of 10 Year Olds To Help Grossman -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Handling a snap is so easy, a fifth-grader could do it. In fact, Rex Grossman might do well to heed the advice of the Widget-level players we contacted Tuesday. The Bears quarterback dropped two more exchanges from center Olin Kreutz on Monday during a preseason game in Indianapolis, leaving many to wonder how an NFL veteran could struggle with something mastered at the lowest levels. ''It's very easy to take snaps,'' said fifth-grader Jimmy Smolik, 10, a quarterback for the St. Linus Hawks in Oak Lawn. ''Just open your hands and wait for the ball, and then you close your hands.'' • It's a snap! Smolik and the Hawks' other quarterback and centers show up 30 minutes before practice to work on snaps. It seems to be helping. ''They usually pick it up real quickly,'' said Hawks coach Scott Smolik, Jimmy's father. ''Sometimes a young quarterback likes to pull his hands away too quickly, and that causes an exchange problem. ''So we have all of our centers and quarterbacks take extra snaps. And after a couple of days, you see improvement and then virtually no missed snaps.'' Perhaps Grossman’s problem is the positioning of his hands. "We tell our quarterback to make sure he gets his hands under the center’s butt," said Daniel Terrini, who helps coach 8- and 9-year-olds on the Wheaton Rams. "Kids can get funny at this age, and sometimes they have a tendency to crouch down low. But they usually pick it up within a week." Brian Barry, 10, another Hawks quarterback, empathizes with Grossman. "It seems easy, but it’s harder than it looks," Barry said. "You have to keep your hands open and wait for the ball. I’ve been taking snaps for two weeks — I get about 25 in practice and about 40 before practice — and I drop three or four of those. "I’d tell Rex to try and not have so many turnovers and to get lower — he’s high a little bit — and to practice more." Maybe the problem lies with Kreutz. Hawks center Dan Markunas, 11, said experience is a key factor. "It depends on how long you’ve been snapping," Markunas said. "This is my first year snapping, and it gets easier as I go on. After a while, it becomes automatic. "Try to get the ball to the quarterback and practice together a lot more." Mike Ruane, 10, another Hawks center, offered some advice many Bears fans likely shouted at their television Monday. "Tell them to keep their eyes open," he said. Many believe the size of Grossman’s hands is a factor. "A hand problem is a possibility," said Myles Coleman, who coaches 8-year-olds on the Glen Ellyn Eagles. "But I would think that problem would have surfaced before now, like in high school or college. "We’ve gone for a year without a snap problem. It’s not a difficult skill." http://www.suntimes.com/sports/football/bears/519859,CST-SPT-snap22.article

-- Bears Call Neal's Hit on Mike Brown Dirty -- Wed Sep 12, 2007 The San Diego Union Tribune reports Chargers FB Lorenzo Neal is being vilified in Chicago for what some there see as a bad hit that resulted in Bears FS Mike Brown rupturing his ACL. According to reports, some Bears players privately questioned Neal's block on a blitzing Brown after the game, and fans and media in Chicago have called Neal dirty. Neal reacted strongly yesterday when asked about the hit. "I haven't ever been involved in a play where I tried to hurt someone intentionally," Neal said. "It wasn't a collar. I talked to Mike Brown. He knows I would never do anything intentionally. That's what happens when you play football. I apologized to him. You never want something like that to happen." As RB LaDainian Tomlinson ran for a 6-yard gain with about 10 minutes to play, Brown ran in and was wrapped up by Neal. The fullback spun with Brown, and both went to the ground. The play might have merited a holding call, but it did not appear malicious.

A TV Cable Cost The Bears A Win? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Chicago Bears lost a game at least in part because of a TV cable. It might have happened yesterday at Qualcomm Stadium. According to Mike Scifres, his short third-quarter punt that set up the Chargers' go-ahead touchdown might have glanced off a wire on which a TV camera hovers above the field. The punt hit an unsuspecting Chicago blocker (Brandon McGowan) and was recovered by the Chargers' Matt Wilhelm at the Bears' 29-yard line. Scifres said he wasn't sure if the punt hit the wire, but a Chargers official watching the game from the field confirmed it did. Nate Kaeding's first kickoff of the day also hit the wire. http://www.signonsandiego.com/uniontrib/20070910/news_1s10chnotes.html

I'm a big Mike Brown fan but his career has been riddled with injuries and this one might end it. The Bears lost two key defensive starters this week which will really hurt their run defense.
Rivera is already denying that he said that.
Rivera didn't say "mental midget" his player did. His player got this impression from what Rivera told them about Rexy. He can deny using the term, but there's no doubt it's a pretty accurate desciption of Rexy's play. Change it now, Tobster!
