I think Capers realized that sending 3 or 4 at crunchtime was a major factor with the Pack LOSING to Pittsburgh last season.

I think he is a good DC, that is better NOW that he realizes the importance of blitzing. I think he was slow to realize that, and excuses in the past about not sending more because there were injuries were bogus.

Outstanding. McCarthy is rumored to be getting an extension as well that will keep him around for the same length as Thompson. Very happy day.

Johnny Jolly really, really, really, really loves him some codeine.

Houston police spokesman Victor Sentias says Jolly was pulled over about 12:45 a.m. Friday. Sentias says officers discovered a bottle containing 600 grams of codeine under the passenger's seat and another bottle with an unidentified substance in the driver's side door.

Jolly was charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute.

Jolly was suspended by the NFL without pay for all of last season for violating the league's substance abuse policy. The ban stemmed from a separate drug arrest.

The Packers and Jolly's agent didn't immediately respond to requests for comment.

I remember when this story first came to light. . .most of the Packer fans I know came back with one of two excuses. Either a) "the codeine isn't his," or b) he was rehabbing an injury, which apparently necessitated that he carry a high enough quantity of a powerful narcotic to take down a charging bull elephant that had been bathed with angel dust.

Eh. . .either way, guess we won't be hearing from Druggy McDruggerson here again any time soon.

Amazing how these guys are millionaires and they just throw a dream job away over something stupid like this.

I don't think the Pack really had any plans for him to be on the team next year anyways. Assuming there is a next year.

If he gets caught with codeine again they're going to have to give him like 10 years of probation.

With their first round pick, the Packers take T Derek Sherrod from Mississippi State.

Like the pick very much. Clifton is just about done and won't make it all the way through the season. The Packers can either move Bulaga over to LT which was the original plan last year and then have Sherrod move to RT as he's proven to be a better run blocker vs pass blocker. Or they can keep Bulaga over at RT and let Sherrod learn from Clifton and not be rushed into starting. He can come in and spell Clifton during games and ease into the role of LT.

There is even talk that he may be able to move over to G which would be a need for the Packers as well.

A need pick for sure but a solid one.

On the surface, it seems to be a good draft for the Packers.

2nd round WR Cobb is a very good pick as he can return kicks and punts (a big weakness of ours from last season) and he's excellent insurance should James Jones decide to leave via FA. Also, who knows if Driver is really coming back or not and health is becoming an issue for him. The comparisons to Jennings and how he looked in college with route running and hands are coming out already and that's what they call a good thing. Plus, he brings the possibility that we could run a Wildcat type of play. I doubt it, but one never knows.

3rd round RB Alex Green is looks to contend for the short yardage (a big weak spot) and 3rd down back. Brandon Jackson is also a FA so no guarantee that he'll be back either. Gotta love that the backup plans are already in place.

4th round CB Davon House is a physical CB who is used to bump and run coverage. He'll be able to learn from Woodson and Williams (who he is reportedly a huge fan of and has tried to mimic his game from him) and contend for the dime back position. I saw that he was a top 10 CB so getting him in at the end of round 4 was a very good value.

5th round TE DJ Williams was the Mackey Award winner (top TE) and was really a steal here. The Pack's lack of a real receiving TE threat when Finley went down and Williams will help us there a lot.

The rest... well I'm not going to go into that as who really knows this far down down in the draft and I don't have a whole lot to say about them anyways.

FA was all about getting the band back together with keeping Kuhn and Jones. The offense looks just incredible on paper. Barnett was released as Bishop proved he wasn't needed anymore and plus we simply needed the cap room. Jenkins followed the $ to Philly which I don't blame him at all for doing. There's some younger guys who are projected to fill in quite well.

Banks said it best in his column at SI. The Packers simply getting healthy replaced any need for some big FA signings. Grant, Finley, Burnett, Jones... all of them were to be huge contributors last year and they have that fire to help with the post SB letdown as they had to watch from the sidelines last season.

It's training camp but apparently the rookies are looking fantastic. Sherrod has been moved to LG and playing some LT and is doing well so far. Cobb has been simply electric in kick returns and has that extra gear and doesn't dance around. TE DJ Williams is catching everthing that's thrown at him.

Lot to be happy about so far, but it's camp and everyone's happy about their teams. Just gotta keep healthy.

They are the champs and did it cleanly unless someone has evidence to the contrary

I think GB is still the class of the NFC with New Orleans and Philly one step below

Packers 42 - Saints 34
The defense of the title began on a big high note last night in a very exciting game.

Offense
  • Rodgers looked fantastic.
  • Not a bad running back by committee between Grant and Starks
  • Finley is a matchup nightmare.
  • They simply couldn't cover Jennings one on one.
  • The OL was solid. Some breakdowns but overall a much better start than in year's past

    Defense
  • Damn that was a lot of yards to give up. Brees was as dialed in.
  • Two big time stands (at the 1 and the 7).
  • Bit concerned about the Williams injury. Hopefully it's not that bad.

    Special Teams
  • Whoa Nelly! That Cobb kid is one hell of a player.
  • Sproles isn't all that shabby either. Gotta do better a job with kick and punt coverage.
  • I hate the new kickoff at the 35.

    I think Ted Thompson phrased this best after the game when he said "This was more like a playoff-tempo game. I think both teams geared up for this." That was the definate feel of the game. One of the better games I've seen and the win was a great way to start the season.

    I peeked in on the X4 Packer thread and they were all bally-whooing about the PI call on Hawk saying how bad of a call it was.....Talk about your green and gold colored glasses.  Hawk made a great play on the ball but he clearly made contact with the receiver before the ball got there.  Matter of fact, the puker fans were all complaining how bad the officiating was.....funny how when Viking fans or any other team for that matter say they got hosed by the ref's its cry baby stuff...but when puker fans say it....its real.  Talk about "entitlement!"  Its why I loathe them so much!
