I think the best comparison for Jones is Big Ben, but seemingly with better wheels once he leaves the pocket

Culpepper is another one.

Just have to complain about the AP college rankings:

1. Ohio State (59 first place votes)
2. Oregon
3. TCU
4. Alabama

So Alabama barely loses to Ohio State, but gets rated below Oregon, which got crushed?

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/ncaaf-dr-saturday/ohio-state-no--1-and-tcu-no--3-in-final-ap-poll-of-2014-season-081035803.html

Agree. They should be #2. Oregon/TCU a toss-up for 3rd. I'd expect Ohio State to be #1 next year preseason with Bama/TCU nipping at their heels.

Ok, settle down.
Clearly not Mariota's best game, but he went 24-37 for 300 plus and 2TDs.
The offense is certainly not a one read offense for the QB as well.
Oregon was definitely pounded but there are some absurd comparisons going on here.

I agree. I like Mariota. And he has the tools physically. He's bigger than people seem to think (6-5?) and is very fast. And you know he's going to work his ass off. I just have some concerns about the system and whether or not he has "NFL" arm strength. I think his floor is very high (solid backup?) but could see anything from that to star, and anything in between. He's a tough case IMO.

Oregon did win one playoff game against the then undefeated, defending national champions. That counts for something.

Sure it counts for something. Just like Alabama's wins over other teams count for something, and Alabama would have crushed FSU.

Although it was politically impossible to leave FSU of the playoffs, it shouldn't have been rated high enough to get in (by differential, they weren't even in the top 10, lots of close wins, good + "lucky" ≠ great). TCU should've been in the playoffs over them.

This.

Jones is the prototype NFL QB. Huge arm and a tall big body that can take an NFL pounding. Kid can run and deliver a blow as demonstrated. he was running over Oregon D-lineman.

If he declares he will go top of 2nd rd if not slip into the first. His stock will go up with more chatter and his measurables are thru the roof.

Kinda makes you wonder how, in his third season, he was passed by a true freshman and fell to #3 on the depth chart.

Heard some talk of this which does raise a red flag. Kid with those tools should be starting over both Barrett and Miller.

Did hear he was ahead of Barrett but got moved down before spring practice even started. My guess is he is a little immature. He did make a pretty dumb tweet about why football players have to attend classes a while back.

He clearly has more talent (arm/size), but ya, remember this is a 22-year old redshirt sophomore. Not exactly the brightest kid (had to go to prep school to delay his start at OSU), and by Urban Meyer's own claims in the last few days he was very lazy and immature. Says he grew up immensely in the last 6 months, but you never know. Certainly the biggest red flag on him aside from experience.

McMurfy -> RE: College Football (Future Vikings!) (1/14/2015 10:55:47 AM)

I think a team will be very pleased with Mariota as an NFL QB on and off the field.
I think on the low end he's an Andy Dalton/ Alex Smith caliber QB and on the high end he's a bigger, stronger, Russel Wilson.
He does not turn the ball over which is a huge attribute for a young QB.

djskillz -> RE: College Football (Future Vikings!) (1/14/2015 11:12:18 AM)

Ya, my concern would be that other QB's haven't turned the ball over much either though. Obviously he's done about as well as you can do in the system, but how much is still the system? Seems like the throws are generally incredibly high percentage throws. Look at the past:

2014: Mariota: 42/4 TD/INT, 4454 yds, 68.3%
2013: Mariota: 31/4 TD/INT, 3665 yds, 63.5%
2012: Mariota: 32/6 TD/INT, 2677 yds, 68.5%
2011: Darron Thomas: 33/7 TD/INT, 2761 yds, 62.2%
2010: Darron Thomas: 30/9 TD/INT, 2881 yds, 61.5%
2009: Jeremiah Masoli: 15/6 TD/INT, 2147 yds, 58.0%
2007: Dennis Dixon's last year: 20/4 TD/INT, 2136 yds, 67.7%
pre-Kelly: 2005: Kellen Clemens' last year: 19/4 TD/INT, 2406 yds, 64.0%

Mariota's done it better for sure, but all these guys have had incredibly good TD/INT ratios and good percentages.

djskillz -> RE: College Football (Future Vikings!) (1/14/2015 11:13:37 AM)

And....I'm just ecstatic the Vikings don't have to worry about it anymore. [:D]

If TB or Tenn offered Winston or Mariota for Teddy I'd hang up and laugh at them.

McMurfy -> RE: College Football (Future Vikings!) (1/14/2015 3:23:12 PM)

If any Facebook firiends are interested, I just uploaded game pics from Oregon/Ohio State

Again, Oregon won a playoff game. Alabama didn't. It didn't matter who played who.

I have no issue with Oregon being Number 2. In reality, if theyre aren't number 1, who cares. No one will remember Oregon was ranked No. 2 in the final AP poll in ten years. They will never forget Ohio State won the first undisputed national championship game.

drviking -> RE: College Football (Future Vikings!) (1/14/2015 8:21:20 PM)

does it really matter who is #2?

now that there is a playoff, it only matters who wins.

nobody cares about being NFC Champion

YMMV

If I was a team that needed a QB I might spend a 2nd rounder on Mariota but have no confidence he will be a stud QB

Guest -> RE: College Football (Future Vikings!) (1/15/2015 10:23:03 PM)

Mariota has the ability to become a good NFL QB.
TEN will draft him and hope he's their next McNair.
It is too much of a QB driven league to not take the chance.

BTW, the best team won.
#2, #3 etc... irrelevant.
Hopefully this is the beginning of the end of rankings determining a playoff field and champion.

i am not sure how you set the playoff field without rankings.

what did you have in mind?

I don't know that the Titans take him, if he's even available. I think they like Mettenberger and he looked the part before he got hurt.

128 team round robin?

Conference champs only.
Some expected conference realignment.
No at large bids.
Tidy Bowls can go to 2nd/3rd place finishers.

Mettenberger is no sure thing.
Neither is Mariota, but you double your chances.
QB driven league.
You gotta find one or be mediocre forever.

Going to 8 power conferences? Or 4? It won't ever go to 8. If anything, 4 may happen anyway and the NCAA will disappear as players will (finally) get paid.

They like Mettenberger, but I think they know they can't go into the year with just him. I still think Mettenberger will never amount to anything, but whatever. But Mariota's a pretty bad fit for Whisenhunt's scheme. I think if Winston is there at 2, they'll take him, but not Mariota. If Mariota's there, they'll try to cash in on a lot of teams trying to trade up to their spot. Whisenhunt is all about the big dropback passer and his scheme doesn't fit mobile QB's at all. Locker is actually a decent QB when healthy it appears (he's just never healthy), but Whisenhunt wanted no part of him from a scheme standpoint.

I think in an ideal world (their world, not mine) they would get Jay Cutler and bring him "home" to Nashville. Good fit for Whisenhunt's offense and he'd be the perfect fit as far as a "stopgap" for Zach in their mind I think. But I think the money situation makes it unlikely Cutler gets moved. They fired Trestman, so it appears they chose the QB over the coach, and he's due a lot of money this year, but not much after that. So they can try him for one more year, and then cut bait or trade him if they want to after that.

I like 8.
You could split up the SEC and Pac 12 into 2 conferences instead of divisions. Add a couple teams where necessary to make 8 team conferences. 64 total teams.
Play out of conference schedules similar to the NFL where you rotate.
One or even 2 losses wouldn't preclude you from being a contender anymore.
Just win your conference.
No rankings.
You know, real sport results.
Not judging synchronized swimming or floor excercises.

Apprentices get paid in many fields that are less hazardous than football, where their companies make nowhere near the money the NCAA does.
To take it further, start a real minor league for the NFL.
Don't make kids have to go to college to get better at sports.

djskillz -> RE: College Football (Future Vikings!) (1/16/2015 10:49:56 AM)

Umm, Art, good luck getting the conferences to go to less teams....and less money in their TV contracts. Ain't happening, man.

Rankings will always be a part of it.
