But Vick might now have a HC that knows how to win. Vick does know how to play quick, and that offense might become hard to defend. I think Vick has abilities to pass and run, I'm just not sure if he has the right make up to be a good teammate and to be a winner.

A long time ago, I think it was back in 2004 when there was debate about the Redskins' name, I read somewhere (it may have just been a joke, but the writer insisted it was the truth) that the name 'Redskins' had nothing to do with Native Americans, but instead came from something in regards to the Boston tea party, something about their faces appearing red as they dumped the tea into the sea. Anybody know anything about this ?

So name a Washington D.C. team after them.

Marty - that sounds like someone who writes fiction for a living. I continue to be amazed that the team name "Redskins" still exists and is supported by so many.

Andy Reid knew how to win.  He went to four straight NFC Championship games and a Superbowl.

It's why he was quickly hired to coach another team.

What Reid didn't know how to do was with without Jimmy Johnson running his defense.  He knew how to run an effective offense.

marty -> RE: Around The NFL (News) - 2012 (5/5/2013 7:46:53 PM)

This writer likes Johnny Football, thinks he'll be something special:

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/9234917/johnny-football-nfl-prospects

I think he may be a great NFL player, but I suspect he'll have a down season next year. He'll have trouble duplicating last season, and will be missing his best WR and his LT, and the team will miss its' best DE.

With a down year, he'll either not enter the NFL draft (that to me is most likely), or he'll drop in the draft, maybe out of the top 10, maybe right to the Vikes (hard to say where they'll be picking), maybe later. If Ponder has a poor season, I would hope the Vikes would consider Johnny, he is rather fun to watch.

Im pretty sure they came from Idaho but there was a heated controversy coming from the Russet supporters.

I will not refer to that team as anything other than "Washington". I don't care if other people don't mind their nickname. I do. I draw a lone between nicknames like "Seminoles" or "Illini" and ones like Washington in the NFL or Cleveland in MLB. The former are an attempt to honor the spirit of specific peoples from those areas, with attention paid to their particular heritage and customs. The latter are lazy and reductive, honoring no one at all, and Washington's in particular is flat out derogatory. I'm going to go with how Chris Rock put it:

"Washington Redskins, that's not nice! That's a racial slur! That's kind of like having the New York ****s, okay?"

The NCAA will allow teams to keep their mascots with no penalty if they can get the support of the tribe in question. Florida State, for example, was exempted after gaining the support of not only the Florida Seminole tribe, but also the Oklahoma Seminole tribe. North Dakota had the support of some tribes, but there were holdouts, so they were not given an exemption.

To me, this is the correct approach. Which points to exactly why Washington's nickname needs to go - which tribe are they honoring? Who can they ask for permission? Beyond the fact that the name itself is a slur, its usage is entirely reductive - it doesn't make any distinction beyond the color of the skin of an entire race. It is nothing more than a pejorative wrapped up in tradition.

As a University of Illinois graduate, I was a bit ticked on how the NCAA handled it. I could go either way, but be consistent. Illinois couldn't keep any Native American reference because the Illini tribe no longer exists, so they can't get permission. The Seminole tribes that gave permission also get some income for giving their permission. Sounds sort of like a bribe to me. I think if the NCAA is going to come down on one team, come down on all of them. Maybe we can get rid of that hothead leprechaun perpetuating stereotypes of redheads and wee folk [8D]

Interesting fact on Don Shula (for no particular reason than I came across it and found it interesting):  He had a winning record against every coach he ever faced except Marv Levy, against whom he was 5–14 during the regular season and 0–3 in the playoffs

We lived in western NY during the Marv Levy years. I think those losses were a factor in Shula leaving Miami. Too bad Marv couldn't carry that momentum into a SB win. Now I get to dread a Vikings - Buffalo SB.

Vick attributes the perception of holding the ball too long to the West Coast offense the Eagles ran under Andy Reid. “We had a lot of deeper throws last year, which required more time,” Vick said. “It’s just a big difference.

Mhmmm. Vick has played in 10, 13, 12 games the last 3 years and has thrown pretty much 20 passes 31 yards and beyond in that WEST COAST OFFENSE each year.

quote:

New coach Chip Kelly’s system will result in quicker throws; if Vick can make them, he’ll likely be the starter. Kelly also has taught Vick something unrelated to throwing the ball — how to run with it, without fumbling.

“The other day, I broke out in the pocket, and the first thing Chip told me was to tuck the football,” Vick said. “So I showed him how I was running with it, and he looked at it and he knocked the ball right out of my hands. And he was like, ‘Hold it like this.’ And what he told me felt comfortable. I had a tighter grip on the football. That should secure that problem as long as I work on it.”

Wow good for you!

It's a ball holding technique unique to Chip Kelly's system.

I have some doubts about Andy Ried being a good HC. IF Kelly is a good HC, Vick could do MUCH better, and Philly could surprise.

Andy Reid was a good coach until Jimmy Johnson died.  Then he sucked.  So unless he's got a really good DC, I don't see KC really getting much better.

If Vick hadn't figured the way to hold a ball by now...then it's too late.  How he holds the ball in the pocket or as he starts running isn't going to suddenly change the fact that he isn't a good QB in the first place.

Lynn G. -> RE: Around the NFL (News) - 2013 (5/21/2013 9:24:56 AM)

Just to clarify - he went by the name Jim Johnson. Not to be confused with Jimmy Johnson.

Several years in a row now, Vicks running style has got him dinged up early in the season, and has led to bad second halves of the season. He'll get dinged up again in 2014 (running is the only way he can be effective) with the same results. 2014 is probably his last in the league. Maybe he'll be able to hang on as a backup.

marty -> RE: Around the NFL (News) - 2013 (5/21/2013 10:13:44 PM)

I think Vick has some talent, and if Kelly can make some corrections on fundamentals with him, the Philly offense could surprise. The defense might surprise as well, now that Reid is gone.

The Giants are the team that I'd pick to win that division, but I wonder if they made a mistake not keeping Bradshaw.

The team I think could surprise is Arizona, at least early in the year. Carson Palmer brings them a decent regular season QB, but I suspect he'll falter if they make the playoffs. An ESPN commentator was saying a few days ago that the guard they drafted in the 1st round reminds him of a young Steve Hutchinson. Add to that, Honey Badger on defense, along with the S.O.D. (Swope of the Draft), and they could be a surprise team (unless Honey Badger and S.O.D. end up spending their time doing dope).

Vick is 32 years old.  There really isn't anything anyone can do to correct his fundamentals.  Vick will not be with the Eagles next year.  There will be some that will suggest, no matter how well Ponder does, that the Vikings pick him up.  I will be in full opposition to that.  Vick is a great athlete, not a great QB.

With Eli at QB and good recievers...plus a pretty good D...they can get by without Bradshaw.  I think they fight the Redskins for the division title.

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/9313291/third-7-not-knee-haunts-john-fox-denver-broncos

Four months after the Denver Broncos' playoff loss to the Baltimore Ravens, coach John Fox said he'd still have Peyton Manning take a knee and go to overtime rather than try for the win with 31 seconds left.

A good reason to NOT pick the Broncos to win it all. Fox has shown he can get a team to the SB, but not win one. I don't think he's likely to win won with Denver either, but Peyton's desire to win as many SBs as his brother might overcome some of Fox's flaws to win a SB. It'll be interesting, we shall see.

Fox made an idiotic move taking a knee. He just wont admit it. While watching that game I was flaborgasted when he had Peyton take a knee with 31 sec left good field position and only needing a field goal. plus, you have Peyton Manning qbing you offense, Fox should have been fired for that.

While I agree let's not rewrite history. They had the ball at their 20.

Vick is no longer a great athlete. Yeah, he allegedly beat McCoy in the 40

Yeah, he claims he can outrun any QB

But all it takes is a couple good hits in the game and then he runs slower than Big Ben

His passing accuracy, which was top notch in 2010, has faded also.

Vick might have been a decent pickup for the Vikings THIS year but by next year he will be as shot as McNabb was when he came here

Vick needs to play on a team that runs the ball 55% of the time

Pretty sure RGIII would light Vick up in the 40 or 100 meter. He was a star track guy as well. This statement is on the premise that when he is fully healed from is acl.

Agree Vick might really flourish with our good run game. Vick does have a great arm and was playing out of his mind a couple years back when he supplanted McNabb. Vick needs a clean pocket to be an effective passer and the Eagles O-Line has been a mess the last two years.

The National Football League has lost one of its legends as Hall of Fame defensive end Deacon Jones has died at the age of 74.

Washington Redskins general manager Bruce Allen relayed the news via the team’s official website. He died of natural causes at his home in Southern California.

“Deacon Jones was one of the greatest players in NFL history. Off the field, he was a true giant. His passion and spirit will continue to inspire those who knew him” said Allen. “He was cherished member of the Allen family and I will always consider him my big brother.”

Jones, nicknamed the “Secretary of Defense,” was one of the most dominant players of his era. He was a two-time NFL defensive player of the year and five-time first-team All-Pro selection. He was named to eight Pro Bowls during his 14-year NFL career. He was also named to the NFL’s 75th Anniversary team. Jones spent his first 11 seasons with the Los Angeles Rams before playing two years for the San Diego Chargers and his final season with the Washington Redskins in 1974.

Bruce Allen’s father, George, was Jones’ head coach for five season with the Rams and again during his final season with the Redskins.

Jones was a member of the “Fearsome Foursome” with the Rams that consisted of Lamar Lundy, Rosey Grier and Merlin Olsen. It was among the most imposing defensive lines ever constructed. Famous for using a head slap to gain an advantage on offensive linemen, Jones was a nightmare for quarterbacks as a pass rusher. Although sacks didn’t become an official statistic until 1982, Jones would be among the best all-time in the category. He unofficially recorded 22 sacks twice during his tenure with the Rams and would rank among the all-time leaders in career sacks. Jones is even credited with first coining the term “sack.”

Jones was named to the Hall of Fame in 1980 during his first year eligible to be elected.
