Just caught this:

What makes Lackey, 35, appealing is that a clause in his contract calls for him to make only $500K next season. It's been reported that Lackey plans to honor that and not seek a new deal.

Holy sh*%, that's pretty amazing. Weird that Lackey and his agent agreed to that deal, but it's kind of refreshing.

Really??

from his deal:

2015 club option at Major League minimum salary if Lackey misses significant time with surgery for pre-existing elbow injury in 2010-14

Smart contract by the Red Sox.

Roy Halladay @RoyHalladay ยท 3h

My wife was on the phone all day yesterday. When she hung up I ask what was going on. Said she was try'n to trade me, very little interest.

The arms race in the American League used to be between the Yankees and Red Sox. Now it's between the Athletics and Tigers.

Beane told reporters that after the Tigers acquired Price, Detroit GM Dave Dombrowski jokingly texted him and said, "You have one minute to acquire Chris Sale."

They have to do something about this catcher rule.

Here are some comments from Mike Redmond after last night's game:

"To lose a ballgame tonight on that play is a joke. It's an absolute joke. I don't think anybody who plays this game should feel good about winning that game. And I would say that if had been reversed. That guy was out by 15 feet. It was a great baseball play. G threw a strike to Matty. He was out by 15 feet. He didn't slide because he couldn't slide because he was out by so far. And yet those guys in New York decided the outcome of that game ...
"No doubt we have some grinders out there in this clubhouse. To look at them in the face and say we lost the game on a technicality is [B.S.]. Absolutely [B.S.]. I'm so [upset]. Like I said I played this game for so long. I've given this game everything I've had as a player and a manager. What a joke. What a [freaking] joke. That's ridiculous."

The catcher was in front of the plate before he had the ball.........BECAUSE HE HAD TO BE THERE TO CATCH THE BALL - THAT'S WHERE IT WAS THROWN. What a joke.

Lester wins his first appearance for Oakland.
Lots of excitement in some of these places
Damn it would be nice to be a relevant team sometime again, before most of us die ....

Jacob deGrom. It's time to start talking about this kid.

I have not been to a Mets game in years, but I think I will just to see this kid pitch. Too bad I was out last night and not paying attention otherwise I would have gotten in front of a TV for a bit:
http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/mets/jacob-degrom-baffles-giants-takes-no-hit-bid-7th-4-2-victory-giants-article-1.1889953
This kid has been pretty much lights out all summer. My friend who is a big Mets fan started talking him up a couple of months ago saying the kid has a little Mark Fydrich in him. I don't see him as being that eccentric but the comparison is kind of fair.

He started off 0-4 and got zero run support. He is now 6-5 and has not given up more than 3 earned runs in eight straight starts. In fact, he gave up 3 earned runs in a game against ATL on July 2nd. Every start since then he's gotten to the 7th inning and he's given up no more than 2 runs in any of those game. One other neat thing about him is he can hit. I have barely seen him pitch at all. That is going to change:
http://espn.go.com/mlb/player/_/id/32796/jacob-degrom

This kid was pretty much under the radar. Mets fans have been talking about Harvey, Wheeler, Syndergaard and others. Never heard peep about this kid until he came up and he's just exploded. I am so jealous of the Mets pitching now. They have a ridiculous number of young arms.

Can't find SMF's post about Thome signing the 1-day contract with the Indians.

Here's the story:

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/mlb-big-league-stew/jim-thome-signs-honorary-one-day-contract-with-indians--officially-retires-222054446.html

A couple cool pics that I can't get posted here for some reason. Been having more and more trouble with that feature lately.

The statue is pretty awesome. Also very cool to see his dad on the field while he signed the contract.

Speaking of the Mets, ewen, I just saw something on MLB Network that bothered me. They peeked in on the Mets dugout as they were getting ready for their game today. David Wright was going up and down the Mets dugout giving hugs and high fives to all his teammates. You could tell these guys cared...they were getting pumped up for today's contest, having fun and definitely aiming for a win. The Mets are playing for nothing, just like the Twins are playing for nothing. Why isn't anything like that ever seen in the Twins dugout? It's like a freakin' morgue in there. Is it Gardenhire? I don't know what it is, but there's absolutely no fire in this organization anymore. Nobody gives a crap and it seems like none of these Twins players even get along. Mackey noted the other day that the Twins players have nothing to do with one another in the clubhouse, they're all just plugged into their own little world with headphones and smartphones. Just once I'd like to see a scene in the Twins dugout prior to a meaningless game like I just saw from the Mets.

But it seems like it's only the other Latin players that acknowledge him.

Dozier does a little celebration with Escobar at the end of a win. I guess that's something (but rare).

Maybe it's on FSN to show more of what's going on in the dugout pre-game. But it seems like most times I see the dugout before a game, it's just guys milling around with pathetic looks on their faces.

Not sure if anyone's mentioned it yet but, battling injuries, Miggy has really tailed off this year. .903 OPS whereas the last several (4) years he's had 1.000+. He hasn't even been the best Tiger this year, which has been Victor Martinez at an OPS of .949. Obviously a .903 OPS is still great, but the decline is coming.

I've always been Miggy's biggest fan and cried for him as a Twin on here for years as the "one that got away" but man, that contract is going to look really really horrible for the Tigers in 2-3 years. Much less 8 years from now. But the owner won't care because he knows he'll be dead by then.
