That's a pretty weak trade overall for the Rays IMO. Would have thought they'd do much better from the Dodgers or Pirates. Freaking Tigers.

The more I look at the Price deal, the more I'm confused. Was Friedman drunk today?

1) Why even deal him for this return? He's the best player in their franchise's history and you have him for one more year. They could have traded him in the offseason, next spring training, or even next trade deadline and not gotten anything less. Plus they wouldn't have destroyed a clubhouse that clawed its way back from the depths this season. What's the rush?
2) They got more for James Shields! A lot more. James Shields people!
3) If you deal Price, don't you deal Zobrist too? Especially when Franklin is in the deal?
4) The A's gave up more for both Lester and Smardzija.

I really don't understand. One of the most mind-boggling trades (from a really smart GM vs 2 relatively dumb ones too) in a long time.

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (7/31/2014 8:53:46 PM)

Joe Maddon @RaysJoeMaddon
No fun losing a David Price. Hate it. But we have to do what is best for our group. Continue to move it forward and that's what we've done.

SoMnFan -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (7/31/2014 11:36:22 PM)

A lot of really big, fun moves today.
nice to see other teams get how its done.
See need
Fill need
They are rewarding their fans, by at least attempting to get better.
odd concept around these parts

The thought that we might see a Tiger/As series down the road is exciting as hell.
Two extremely loaded teams.
That series would be great for baseball if it happened this Fall.

No doubt. Though I hope the A's demolish them. That's a matchup of easily my 2nd favorite team in the sport and possibly my 2nd LEAST favorite.

Matt/Ed, this is what Stacey and I were getting at. From Stark:

Can the A's replace Yoenis Cespedes' production? Not quite, but the offense doesn't take a huge hit with a Jonny Gomes-Sam Fuld platoon, the two other players the A's acquired Thursday:

Cespedes versus LHP, 2013-2014: .262/.347/.492
Gomes versus LHP, 2013-2014: .264/.370/.440

Cespedes versus RHP, 2013-2014: .241/.278/.436
Fuld versus RHP, 2014: .250/.343/.340

I cheated a little bit there, since Fuld was terrible in 2013. The A's lose power but pick up better on-base guys. It's actually a pretty even tradeoff, assuming Gomes and Fuld play at that level. The A's have other options, as well: Against right-handers, they could put Derek Norris behind the plate, DH John Jaso and play Stephen Vogt in the outfield instead of Fuld. The A's still have lineup flexibility to replace Cespedes, and they picked up one of the hottest starters in the game.

Just caught this:

What makes Lackey, 35, appealing is that a clause in his contract calls for him to make only $500K next season. It's been reported that Lackey plans to honor that and not seek a new deal.

Holy sh*%, that's pretty amazing. Weird that Lackey and his agent agreed to that deal, but it's kind of refreshing.

it was in his original deal b/c of a pre existing elbow condition,

if he had elbow issues during the contract he signed with the bosox

and he did --he missed a season with tj...so the 500K clause for 2015 kicked in
