What happens when you suck vs the Twins

The Royals have designated veteran lefty Bruce Chen for assignment, according to a tweet from Chris Cotillo of MLBDailyDish.com. Chen, a 37-year-old native of Panama, is playing on a one-year, $4.25MM deal that includes a $5.5MM option for next season ($1MM buyout).

Reality bites
If you can't get it done versus the Twins .......

12:49pm: The Brewers have bolstered their bullpen by acquiring right-hander Jonathan Broxton from the division-rival Reds in exchange for a pair of players to be named later, the teams have announced.

BALT is all in

The Orioles have announced that they’ve acquired infielders Kelly Johnson and Michael Almanzar from the Red Sox for infielders Jemile Weeks and Ivan De Jesus. This is the Orioles’ second significant trade of the evening, having also recently acquired outfielder Alejandro De Aza from the White Sox. The Johnson deal gives the Orioles a bit of low-cost infield depth.

The Orioles have announced that they’ve acquired left-handed outfielder Alejandro De Aza from the White Sox for minor league pitchers Miguel Chalas and Mark Blackmar. Orioles executive Dan Duquette says (via MASNsports.com’s Roch Kubatko on Twitter) that De Aza had been available for a few weeks, which suggests he cleared waivers.

The Mariners have placed first baseman Jesus Montero on the suspended list for the remainder of the 2014 season, the team announced. The move comes as no surprise given that Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik recently said that Montero wouldn’t play again this year in order to focus on off-the-field issues. Montero’s suspension and Willie Bloomquist being moved to the 60-day DL creates two spots on the team’s 40-man roster that have been filled by catcher Humberto Quintero and right-hander Carson Smith, who had their contracts selected in corresponding moves.

It was only a few years ago that Montero was considered one of the very best prospects in all of baseball, yet his star has almost completely dimmed after three tumultuous years in Seattle. Montero has hit only .251/.291/.378 with 19 homers over 680 PA as a Mariner while battling injuries, weight issues and a 50-game suspension for his involvement in the Biogenesis case. Just last Thursday, Montero got into a heated altercation with a Mariners scout that apparently stemmed from the crosschecker sending an ice cream sandwich to the dugout as a taunt about Montero’s weight.

Good news Stiegs. This scruffy dud isn't planning on retiring.

37-year-old lefty Joe Beimel not only has no plans to retire, his 12-year career might only be half-over. “I plan on pitching until I’m at least 50….I don’t see any reason I can’t do what Jamie Moyer did,” Beimel said. “He was starting games at 49 years old and getting guys out with 80 mph. I’m not down that low yet and I figure if he could go six, seven innings, I could at least come in and get one or two guys out.” After missing 2012 and 2013 due to Tommy John surgery, Beimel is enjoying a nice comeback year out of the Mariners‘ bullpen. The veteran southpaw has a 2.03 ERA, 5.2 K/9 and 1.92 K/BB ratio in 40 innings, and he’s held left-handed batters to only a .480 OPS.

Does it amaze anyone else ... how much of a boost moving to a new team seems to give EVERYONE?
Its fascinating to watch.
Cannot tell me emotion and adrenaline doesn't rule sports, It absolutely does.
Dunn homers in his first A's game today.

Beane really wet the bed when he traded Cespedes for Lester. They had plenty of pitching and they traded their main run producer to get more. It completely screwed up the offense and the dynamic of the team. Now the pitchers are pressing because they can't score any runs.

Proof that pitching isn't everything. Even if you have it you need offense to go with it or you get nowhere

Yet Oakland maynot win the division, but leads the WC chase, and when pitching is most important, the playoffs, they're in good shape.

If they make it. [8|]

I don't expect them to recover.

They will probably make it.......but.......having a essentially a play in game for the two WC teams is really difficult, even with great pitching.

Should have traded prospects instead of a position player for Lester......upset the apple cart and team chemistry with the trade.

Cards now leading and still do not have a positive run differential.

Yanks with a -27 run differential....wow.......Giradi is a miracle worker.

Anyway we can change their G man for our G man???????

Hey gents,

Back from a great weekend in the Smokies and Atlanta. I saw the no-hitter yesterday! I've just had crazy dumb luck. I've now seen two of them, both against the Braves. Was there for the last one against them, 2010, Ubaldo.

Hamels was filthy at times but still walked guys. Braves had scoring chances and Heyward stole three bases. Don't see that often (or ever?) in a no-hitter. Giles for the Phillies was pure nastiness. What a stud that guy is.

Teheran pitched a good game but was no match for Hamels on a scorching day in Atlanta. I told my buddy I went with that I would leave after 6. Well, you can't really leave a no-hitter. But yesterday, at least half the crowd was gone by the 9th. I really can't believe my luck though. I thought I'd never see one in my lifetime and I've now seen two. [:D]

djskillz -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (9/2/2014 11:32:45 AM)

Can't agree on the A's guys. In the playoffs you need an ace, and Lester is that. They NEED him in the playoffs, and they're still going to make the playoffs. Cespedes is highly overrated. He had a .767 OPS with Oakland this year. Adam Dunn's been better than him this year.

It's a slump. They had to have one of those at some point. They'll come out of it and be better for it.

Not good when the manager closes the door and blasts the team......at this point in the season.

I liked that they went and got Lester.....but sometimes moving a positional player midseason, even one that is overrated, etc., can disrupt team harmony.

We shall see. But if you face Seattle in one game and they have Felix and you have Lester, all the other great pitching on the staff doesn't mean squat. Same thing if you face Detroit for one game.

djskillz -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (9/2/2014 11:49:14 AM)

Yep, Miles. Which is why I like the move. Lester stacks up well with those guys. They NEEDED him.

MLB image even suffers on-line, with the media.

It's Tuedsay, the NFL starts in 2 days, with ONE GAME

and the first 4 "top stories" are football related. None of them big stories.

then it's the world USA basketball team

THEN baseball.

djskillz -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (9/2/2014 2:55:56 PM)

Heard a piece this morning with Jason Stark. Was talking about how Manfred is going to make a lot of people in baseball (players, fans, teams, union) uncomfortable because he would make baseball much more relevant in the pop culture. ie lots more endorsements of players individually, lots more "star" stuff wherein right now it's always been more team oriented and guys are kind of toned down by teams/managers.

Pretty interesting to hear.

The Minnesota Dinosaur and Okie will cringe at that.

I like football and I LOVE basketball. But I always will hate that part about the calendar change. Football's a very distant 3rd to me behind those two. Spring is still my favorite time of year because you have March Madness AND the start of baseball season, probably the two best events in sports (other than the Olympics) IMO.

I could see even players taking issue with it to some extent. I'm sure he's talking about a lot more access to players, a lot more showboating allowed, etc. But it must be done to try to catch up with the rest of the sports world. Should be interesting.

Personally, I think it's going to be VERY tough for baseball to ever catch up. The NBA has fantastic world footholds already; probably the sport of the future when you think about how much the world is shrinking and how "star driven" a basketball team can be with only 5 starters. And football obviously dominates sports currently for coverage. Baseball has killed itself marketing-wise for 30 years, at least.
