Heard a cool stat today: If Clayton Kershaw wins the ERA title this year that will be four in a row. The first guy to do that since the teens. 1.73 ERA this year after 1.83 last year. 207 ERA+

And he's 26. [:-]

Like Trout, we're watching a historically great one here, folks. One of those "top 10, chance for top 5 or even better" type of guys IMO.

Enjoy it.

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (9/3/2014 6:02:42 AM)

It's a good thing MN signs middling guys to the medium bucks deals.

CIN is looking at forearm surgery for Homer Bailey, HOPING to avoid UCL surgery.

1st year of 6/105 mill.

TRex would keel over, committing to a pitcher that much and to see surgery upcoming.

djskillz -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (9/3/2014 8:47:31 AM)

More teams should try to do what the Sox did with Lackey; if you have TJ and are out for a year, then you tack on an extra year at league minimum.

I love Football and Basketball sucks.

Spring for me is nice as we work our way out of winter in MN.
Spring training springs hope eternal, but I am cynical enough to know that with Gardy managing this team is going to stink again.
March Madness makes me want to puke. And can someone tell me why anyone would want to play in the NIT or whatever the secondary tournament is...if you win it, your like the 65th best team in the country...CONGRATS!!!

djskillz -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (9/3/2014 9:33:40 AM)

The NIT is terrible, I agree. But March Madness is the best. Those first two days of the tournament should be national holidays because they're the least productive days in the country anyway for workers (statistical fact).

Coaches love the NIT since it allows them to continue to develop young teams.......and success in the NIT often translates into success in the tournament the next season.

What amazes me is how thick the skulls are of the college football people who fought like crazy to keep a playoff format out of college football. This year's 4 team playoff will be huge. I would prefer a 6 or 8 team format.

djskillz -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (9/3/2014 9:49:32 AM)

No doubt, Miles. The media for it is going to be crazy. The other bowl games are just like the NIT anyway; they don't matter to anyone but the players and the alums of those schools. So they will continue to not matter to anyone else and still have their place.

Dave E -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (9/3/2014 9:57:35 AM)

Agree, Miles and Dustin. This argument that "No one's going to car about the Music City Bowl anymore!!!" is just silly -- no one cares about it anyway.

I'll be shocked if it isn't an eight team playoff within five years.

Funny you say that too; I have a couple friends that work for the MCB. They say the new system actually helps them because they have more freedom in picking the participating teams/matchups now, and I think the same is true for a number of other bowls.

It's as if Gardy has been running the BCS for all these years.

MDK -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (9/3/2014 10:19:43 AM)

5 teams per division, 3 divisions per league, 2 leagues, 30 teams

14 games against teams within your division

14 x 4 = 56

9 game (3 - 3 game series) against teams within your league

10 x 9 = 90

Interleague....each division plays one other division and the interleague divisional matchups rotate....

Inititally, west vs. west, central vs. central, etc. next season, Al west against NL central, AL central against NL east,

One 3 game series per team

5 x 3 = 15

Total, 161 games........add another game for 162. Still get interleague play but increase the games for teams within the league and decrease the number of games within a division.

Joe Posnanski swings and misses on this column. The fans should support a good product like the Royals at this point. Joe Posnanski wrote this blog entry to suck up to the fans. He comes off sounding very preachy. It's the first Posnanski article (I don't read anywhere near all of them) that I've completely disagreed with.

Dave E -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (9/3/2014 3:31:18 PM)

Really? I tend to agree with the column. For background: it's become pretty clear that Posnanski HATES Ned Yost and thinks he's a terrible manager (not without reason) -- so to me, this was more of a "shred Ned Yost" thing than a "suck up to the fans" thing.

Using Posnanski's logic, nobody should ever show up for a baseball game. He keeps going back to "market your team better" or "lower the prices." It takes a lot of money to run a major league team. Prices will not be coming down. Get with reality, Joe. I don't blame Yost at all for his frustration. The Twins and almost every team out there are outdrawing the Royals by a lot almost every night. Why not call out the Royals fans? Maybe it will make them try to save the team from moving to a place where the fans are a little more appreciative of effort and current success.

So next year, if the Twins somehow perform better and are marginally in the race in August, you'll be OK with Gardy exocriating the fans for not coming out in appropriate force?

Depends on if we are really in the race or not. If we are in the race, yes, I would be OK with that approach by Molitor.

twinsfan -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (9/3/2014 4:00:07 PM)

This is the part of the article that just bugs me:

Let’s try again: If more fans buy one book than any other, it goes to No. 1 on the New York Times bestseller list. If more fans go to a movie than any other, it becomes the No. 1 grossing movie. If more fans buy one song than any other, it shoots to the top of the ITunes list. People can and do complain about the choices of these lists and what they say about society, but what they’re not complaining about the lists themselves. The lists are reflections of the fans wishes. The fans define those lists. They cannot be wrong. A director who moans that more people should have watched his or her movie is not just ludicrous, he’s by definition wrong. Exactly as many fans watched the movie as watched the movie.

What is this, the pop culture argument? I hate that one. "Elvis had to be the best artist of all-time - he sold more records than anyone (I actually don't know if he did, but I'm using him as an example here)! Your favorite singer is not as good as Elvis! There's proof!"

The fans have most definitely been wrong on Justin Bieber, and that's just one easy example.

He was posting when I was gone. I remember reading a few.

When I checked in reading from time to time while I was gone, it seemed like this place ran better without me. That Idle Talk stuff really took off.

Why? It's amazing where they are at all. And they're still leading the WC and are well within striking distance of the Beibers. They still play them 3 more times.

Royals haven't made the postseason in almost 30 years. Can anyone blame the folks down there for not investing a lot to go see them? They've had about two seasons where they've legitimately contended into September and this is the second one....

Why do people still go to Yankee games? or Red Sox games? Because they play to win.
Put a winning team on the field and eventually the fanbase will show up.
Unless you play in a shithole like Tampa.
