The collapse of Oakland is historical.........will rival the Phold of the Phillies in 1964 under Gene Mauch.

Beane needed a Lester.

He didn't need a the trade with the Cubs where Chicago sent pitchers Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel to the Oakland Athletics for 2012 first-round pick Addison Russell, 2013 first-round pick Billy McKinney, pitcher Dan Straily.

Losing Russell was dumb and dumber. Furthermore, isn't there something about ex Cubs and teams that have them don't get to the WS? Or something like that.

Finally, who wants ex Notre Dame players in Samardziji???????

This is how it is done properly.........Hunter takes full responsibility for his baserunning snafu the other night in the Twins 8 to 4 victory.

Brad Ausmus, while certainly noting that the baserunning error hurt the team, he also noted it was one of many things and doesn't identify Torri's miscue as the key to the game.

Would Gardy have responded in such a manner?

We already knew that Cuddyer's dp ended up screwing up the game for Radke the next half inning.

Or how about how key Dozier's throw was in early August, 2012.

Gardy......why is he our manager again????????

Should Billy Beane get the axe? I'll admit he almost had me fooled earlier in the year. I was almost on board with Billy Ball. But he deemed Cespedes expendable because he had a lousy OBP. It certainly would appear now he was what made that offense tick. Pitchers obviously feared his power, and he undoubtedly got other guys in that lineup better pitches to hit.

Gotta admire Beane for going for it, but losing Cespedes and Russell.......ouch. Looks like it backfired.

That was years ago and I changed my mind.

Jeter was a pretty good player. Anyone gets 3000 hits deserves some cred.

That being said, I didn't shed a tear over that video on here.
He's not some mythical being fading into the sunset. He's an old ballplayer whose time has passed.

Or Aaron
Or Teddy Williams
Or even Dimmaggio Gehrig.

He will end up in the HOF in about a half decade, but it's overrating him quite a bit to call him a legend.

Incredibly sad. I think the glaucoma ultimately killed him. He didn't get to quit on his own terms. His career was abruptly taken from him. I think he went into a state of depression. His personal life spiraled out of control. He became obese. Incredibly sad. I'm convinced that Dennis Martinez pitch to the face is what caused the Glaucoma. It did enough damage where I'm guessing it caused those blood vessels plugging up causing his blindness. I'm not blaming Martinez. That's baseball. It got away. Didn't Puck say the reason his reaction was slow was he thought it was a curve ball? What a lineup that would have been. Knoblauch, Molitor, Puckett.

he was hit on the left side of his face and the glaucoma was in the right eye.

In some ways Kirby was becoming a better hitter late in his career. He was taking walks a lot more in 1995 (his final season), and had his best OBP in his career. The way he was playing he would have had no problem reaching 3,000 hits in his career. In fact, 3,500 was within reach, if everything broke right. He's still a Twins legend, but he would have been an all-time legend if his career wouldn't have ended so prematurely.
