Would like to see a little heat put on Gardenhire by way of a story on his history with players who leave.

I'm not talking about Span really because he did well here, but the rest of them too dating back to Balfour & Lohse. Balfour was one of the first to go through the Twins now patented medical staff machinations and innuendo about toughness. He said his am wasn't right, they said he was one of those players who wouldn't pitch unless he felt 100%. Well he ended up with TJ surgery soon after leaving.

If only one of the beat writers would do a long article on players who have gotten away from Gardenhire's idiocy and did well elsewhere. A big old list in the Trib with pictures, stats with the Twins, quotes from Gardenhire when they were here. Stats and accomplishments after they left.

Seconded. We should just compile one as a board and blast it out to Twins' media. See if one of them picks up on it.

Seriously ..... The AMOUNT of material on the subject, would be staggering.
And no ball-less writer or newspaper in the TC will touch it.

Stacey King -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (9/17/2014 10:32:35 AM)

a 4-part series.

MDK -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (9/17/2014 10:34:32 AM)

Get Ken Burns to take it on.....a PBS special. Ron Gardenhire and the MN Twins......the Untold Story.

twinsfan -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (9/17/2014 12:05:28 PM)

Athletics pitcher Jason Hammel will miss Saturday's scheduled start due to the birth of his second child, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Drew Pomeranz will make a spot start in his place.

So I assume Hammel's child has already been born. It's Wednesday. Why can't he make the start on Saturday? In the heat of a pennant race, I think this is a little strange.

Maybe there are complications....a birth is still no guarantee that it went w/o problems.

Jason Hammel will miss his scheduled start on Saturday in order to attend the birth of his child.

Oh. Weird they couldn't schedule it for a different date. Obviously I don't know the circumstances though. Just commenting.

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (9/18/2014 10:33:15 AM)

it sure sucks when players decline drastically

Jeter's last year

.249 avg, .298 OBP

.297 SLG

Sports are very unforgiving for athletes when they fade.

And Girardi continued to bat him at the top of the order, effectively killing any chance the Yanks had.

twinsfan -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (9/18/2014 10:48:55 AM)

Back in April, Joe Girardi talked a big game. But in the end, Girardi couldn't deliver on his promise, not even close.

"I wasn't hired to put on a farewell tour," Girardi said back at the beginning of the season to the question about whether the long good-bye expected for Derek Jeter might affect Girardi's decision making.

No, Girardi insisted. Winning games is all that counted. It was a strong sentiment, a stronger statement. But it's one the Yankees manager couldn't back up, not by a long shot.

In the end, Girardi batted Jeter second throughout the year despite plummeting results. Jeter, 40, stands second on the Yankees in at-bats despite ranking near the bottom of the league in offensive categories and last in baseball among 150 qualifying hitters in slugging percentage.

While jeter batting second didn't help the Yanks, the team had way too many holes to be a playoff team this season. I don't think they underachieved, I think they least achieved a level of performance consistent with ability and perhaps overachieved. They are -34 in runs differential and are above 500.

The most amazing teams this season are probably St. Louis who until recently still had a negative run differential and Pittsburgh who were out of the race and now are 2.5 games ahead of the next team in the Wild Card race. St. Louis has only a 11 run positive differential.....lowest of any of the division leaders by a huge margin.

Yankees had a much better season than this fan expected.
Mostly in part to having a great manager.
Will be interesting and refreshing to see what the post-Jeter Yanks look like.
Helluva career. Time for everyone to move on. Haters included.

SoMnFan -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (9/18/2014 11:26:32 AM)

Feel bad for the shell-shocked As
They peaked too early
Smarardajackivardstpg pitched eight wonderful innings last night, and then sat and watched it all get blown up in the ninth.

I used to hate Jeter. He who could do no wrong. His defense was highly overrated by a few highlight reel plays in the playoffs over the years, in reality I thought they should have moved him to another position when ARoid arrived because ARoid was the far better defensive SS. I truly believe they didn't want to upset the captain and probably thought ARoid was more apt to successfully learn another position than Jeter was.

Looking at his whole career though, it's hard to dismiss him as 3000 hits is no easy task. And he could have played a few more years too.

SoMnFan -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (9/18/2014 12:51:43 PM)

I liked Moneyball the first time I saw it.
Really liked it the second time.
Love it now. Watch it again if you haven't lately.
It climbs five notches on my favorites list every time I see it.
Probably in my top ten at this point.

I hated Pulp Fiction the first time I saw it. (probably because of the negative nellies I went with)
But my progression on that film mirrors this.
Probably in my top ten.

Wonder who the SS will be next year.

Hanley Ramirez or Troy Tulowitski?

I was sure it was HanRam.
Until Tulo started making waves.
Now I'm leaning that way.
He needs a fresh start somewhere. Yanks won't care if it fails. At least they'll try.

Hehehe.
