Yup
A couple of these guys we hype as unbeatable, are getting pounded like rented mules or southern-raised children. (Too soon?)
To me .... It'll always be what I've griped about for years ..... Good teams have built their offenses to eliminate holes.
No slouches. No defense-only guys. No one-dimensional players.
Bigger, stronger, more-athletic hitters, 1-9. Moustakis is the #9 hitter fer chrissakes.
You can't build a staff that will guarantee you a win every night. You have to build an offense that carries the team, pitchers included, for the entire season. Not just streaks. I credit the Yankees for stressing this years ago.
Focused on at-bats. Took pitches. Only played guys who could DRIVE the ball.
Yes, it made games longer. Yes, it's ugly 9-8 scores. But it's progress and it's how kids want to play the game.
Do what you can, to build a pitching staff, but if you can't wear out your opponents staff, you ain't winning nothing.

SoMnFan -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (10/4/2014 10:21:00 AM)

All these teams are handing their "ACES" large leads early.
And still losing.
Because these offenses never quit coming.

Maybe someone's already posted this, but Max Scherzer reportedly turned down 6/$144m. I got a feeling he's going to end up regretting that. Unbelievable.

Not sure about that. He'll have a bidding war with the Cubs/Yankees/Sox this year. I expect the Cubs to be the biggest players in FA this year. They have a $500M renovation to Wrigley coming and they called up the kids late this year, signaling that they're ready to start the process. Basically where we will be next year when Buxton/Sano get called up.

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (10/7/2014 7:54:03 AM)

Texas lopped off 7 guys from their 40 man Monday. Need 2 more IF they re-activate all 9 guys on the 60-day DL.

TRex's head would explode if he had to make those decisions. The Twins should remove a ton of guys from this team's 40-man roster.

Without looking, there have to be at least 7 we could chop without batting an eye. TR, on the other hand...tears, night sweats, etc.

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (10/7/2014 3:37:00 PM)

Teams wishing to make one-year qualifying players to pending free agents will have to be willing to pay them $15.3MM, the Associated Press reports (via Sportsnet.ca; h/t to Ben Nicholson-Smith). That represents an 8.5% increase over least year’s $14.1MM price tag.

The qualifying offer value is arrived at by averaging the salaries of MLB’s 125 highest-paid players. Teams may extend qualifying offers to eligible free agents-to-be within five days after the end of the World Series. Players have seven days to weigh the offer. When a player rejects the offer, his former team becomes eligible to receive an additional “sandwich” round pick in the next amateur draft, while a new signing team must forfeit their highest non-protected pick. (No draft pick movement occurs if a player re-signs with his original team.)

In order for a player to be eligible to receive a qualifying offer, the CBA states that he must have spent the entire regular season on that team’s roster. For example, Brandon McCarthy is ineligible to receive a qualifying offer after beginning the season with the Diamondbacks and being traded to the Yankees. Click here for more details on how the qualifying offer system works.

Another reason to like the Royals.
After the game Sunday several Royal players went on twitter to invite Royal fans to join them at a bar in the downtown Power District. One of the fans was a cancer patient that Hosmer had invited to hang out with the team the past couple weeks. Hosmer handed him a bottle of champagne to and told him to spray the crowd. Hosmer also bought drinks for the bar for an hour. Baseball is far from dead in KC.

Hosmer spent $3K out of pocket, entire team spent $12K that night

Great gesture by the team to the fans.
