I'm with ya, but I'm not sure that would even solve the problem re: Arcia, because then you'd be forced to play Vargas at 1b, which is also a bad idea IMO. Arcia likely needs to go.

I don't see the problem with planting Vargas at 1B. You simply don't need a good defender there. It's immaterial. It actually makes me feel better about a team when the 1B is not very good defensively; it tells me they're smart enough to not over-value defense.

Disagree. Doesn't matter as much. But still matters. A 1b gets a LOT of defensive chances.

Black 47 -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (12/2/2014 5:08:46 AM)

Trading Arcia would be insanity. They can make him into an adequate outfielder. An organization this devoid of hitters with pop for so long would be insane to finally get one and then trade him. It would seem to make sense to move Mauer to the outfield and DH Arcia, but the results would probably be worse. At this point in his career Mauer's probably lost alot of athletic ability. And I could see him being hesitant to dive for balls, and also as a guy who won't be willing to run into the wall to catch a ball. Not to mention moving him to the outfield will make him even more injury prone.

Just go with:
LF Rosario
CF Hicks/Schafer
RF Arcia

And try to sign a good 4th outfielder in case Rosario's not quite ready. But I'm happy with that CF duo until Buxton is ready.

djskillz -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (12/2/2014 11:20:12 AM)

I don't know man. Again, I'm a big Arcia guy, always have been. And I do think he'll hit longterm. But if he's struggling this much defensively at 23, I'm not sure that's going to get much better longterm. OF defense still matters and we have a lot of OF options coming in Buxton/Hicks/Rosario/Kepler. Plus you still have Sano/Plouffe where one could always go to RF or LF.

From Yay-hoo

Jon Lester continues to make his way through free agency and he has one less offer to consider before making his decision.
The Braves were expected to be in the hunt for his signature, hoping that Lester making his offseason home near Atlanta might help their courtship. But according to David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, they've been priced out of the race:

Bidding for the free-agent pitcher already climbed well above $20 million annually in six-year offers from the Cubs, Red Sox and possibly the Giants, and the Braves decided they couldn’t afford a competitive offer for the left-hander.
That leaves three teams in hot pursuit. The Cubs have reportedly offered Lester six years, $138 million while the Red Sox are believed to be coming in with the same term for slightly less cash.

The Giants met with him on Monday and have the funds to make a big play after Pablo Sandoval left San Francisco for the Red Sox. Longshots for Lester include the Blue Jays, Cardinals and Royals.

Hochever re-signs w/KC, 2 years/10 mill

Crazy. Guy is a bullpen thrower coming off TJ surgery.

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (12/3/2014 8:28:44 AM)

The Blue Jays have non-tendered a trio of recently-acquired position players in John Mayberry Jr., Justin Smoak, and Andy Dirks, the club announced.

Smoak was a can't miss prospect.

Which is further proof it's tough to make it in the bigs.

Mayberry Jr is already 30. Now a bench/sub guy. Time flies when you're stuck in neutral.

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (12/3/2014 4:05:05 PM)

One day after non-tendering him, the Blue Jays have signed first baseman Justin Smoak to a one-year, $1MM deal, the team announced. Toronto obviously saw an opportunity to achieve some savings, as Smoak was projected by MLBTR and contributor Matt Swartz to take home a $3MM salary through arbitration.

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (12/3/2014 8:53:55 PM)

The Atlanta Braves and rightfielder Nick Markakis have agreed to a four-year, $44 million deal, reports Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun.

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (12/3/2014 8:55:27 PM)

The Blue Jays have traded starting pitcher J.A. Happ to the Mariners in exchange for outfielder Michael Saunders, the team announced Wednesday.

djskillz -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (12/3/2014 9:13:32 PM)

I'd rather have Saunders than Torii. For a lot less money. I could have seen Milone getting that done for us. Or maybe even less.

twinsfan -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (12/3/2014 9:41:01 PM)

Billy Beane and Josh Donaldson got into a heated argument about Donaldson begging for days off. Donaldson would also taunt Beane by calling him "Billy Boy." Beane had enough of his act (much like Brad Pitt had enough of Jeremy Giambi) and said "SEE YA!" Don't mess with Billy Beane.

White Sox acquire Samardzija. Nice top of the rotation.

Didi Gregorius traded to the Yankees.

Part of a 3-way deal

9:39am: Jon Morosi of FOX Sports tweets that the second player heading to Arizona will be an infielder.

9:21am: The Yankees, Diamondbacks and Tigers have completed a three-team trade that will send Didi Gregorius to the Yankees, reports Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (Twitter link). Rosenthal adds that Robbie Ray will indeed go from the Tigers to the Diamondbacks and Shane Greene will be heading to the Tigers. WFAN’s Sweeny Murti first reported the potential framework and noted that Greene would head to Detroit if the deal were to be completed. Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic first tweeted that Ray could be headed to Arizona.

False alarm. Phil Miller was only speculating this would happen. Sorry.

Here are the Candidates for the HOF that the veterans committee will be voting on. They include Tony Oliva and Jim Kaat.

Hall of Fame candidates

The 10 finalists for Hall of Fame consideration by the Golden Era Committee:

Dick Allen: The seven-time All-Star and 1972 AL MVP with the White Sox had 351 home runs, 1,119 RBI and .292 batting average.

Ken Boyer: Seven-time All-Star, five Gold Gloves and 1964 NL MVP with the Cardinals batted .287 with 282 HR and 1,141 RBI.

Gil Hodges: Eight-time All-Star, three Gold Gloves batted .273 with 370 HR, 1,137 RBI. Also managed Mets to 1969 World Series title.

Bob Howsam: Cincinnati general manager from 1967 to ’77 who later helped bring Major League Baseball to Colorado.

Jim Kaat: Had 283-237 record in 25 seasons, including 190-159 in 15 seasons with Twins. Won 16 straight Gold Gloves starting in 1962.

Minnie Minoso: Seven-time All-Star was in top five MVP voting four times. Batted .298 with 186 HR and 1,023 RBI.

Tony Oliva: Eight-time All-Star, three batting titles and five-time AL leader in hits. Batted .304 with 220 HR and 947 RBI.

Billy Pierce: Seven-time All-Star was 211-169 with 3.27 ERA; led the AL with 1.97 ERA in 1955 and had 193 complete games.

Luis Tiant: Won at least 20 games four times, finishing 229-172 with 3.30 ERA and 187 complete games. Was 7-3 for Twins in 1970.

Maury Wills: Batted .282 with 586 stolen bases, leading NL six times in a row starting in 1960. NL MVP in 1962 and a seven-time All-Star.

anyone care to ffoer their opinions?

Kaat is much like Bert imho. If he only had another 17 wins...
Oliva is borderline only because medicine could fix knees back then like they can now.

I would vote for Allen, Hodges, Kaat, Oliva, Tiant and Wills.

twinsfan -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (12/5/2014 12:24:44 PM)

I would vote for Oliva and Kaat only.

djskillz -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (12/5/2014 12:53:42 PM)

LOVE those guys. But wouldn't vote for any of them. Just didn't do it long enough in Oliva's case. Or well enough, in Kaat's case.

I do think there are well over the maximum of 10 players currently eligible that should be voted in right now. But sadly the old crotchety baseball writers will continue to be hypocrites on performance enhancers.

This is the Veterans commitee list, I don't think anyone from the PED era that you may be referring to would be eligible for this committee.

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (12/5/2014 1:38:48 PM)

: The Rays will hire former big league catcher Kevin Cash as their next manager, reports Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (Twitter link). Cash was reportedly one of three finalists with Raul Ibanez and former Mariners manager/current Royals bench coach Don Wakamatsu. Ibanez had reportedly withdrawn himself from consideration earlier this week.

Oh, I know Trekkie. Separate point. I just figured it was a natural extension of this HOF discussion.

admitted cheaters are already in the HOF (Gaylord Perry anyone?) I really think they should just set aside the PED thing and vote for them. I agree there are a bunch that should be in regardless. And there are a few with no ties or evidence of use, only suspicion that are being "barred" as well.

just admit that baseball perpetuated the situation to recover from a debilitating strike and put them in.

Twins have a chance to bring back another key ex-Twin

The Dodgers announced that they have claimed catcher Ryan Lavarnway off waivers from the Red Sox and designated fellow backstop Drew Butera for assignment
