Our payroll should definitely be higher. There's analysis out there (and I've done along those lines in the past) that says our payroll should be in the $120M to $130M range annually with MLB revenues now, despite declines in attendance. There's still a ways to go to get to that point.

That being said, Chicago is in Chicago. They're always going to be able to spend more than us. But their decisions are still questionable. That team still doesn't look all that scary to me. And has some crazy contracts.

Black 47 -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (12/15/2014 7:21:22 AM)

I could support a lower payroll now if I knew it was all part of a grand plan and they were saving it so they could splurge when then window is open in a couple years. Unfortunately, we know from their track record that's not how they operate. They operate season to season, and it makes no sense.

WHY NOT bank money for future payroll so they could go out and add the right player when the time is right? Any fan could support lower payrolls during cyclical rebuilds if they knew the team would spend when the championship window was open. Instead we get August 31 deals like Phil Nevin and Pat "pass ball" Borders.

8:02am: USA Today’s Bob Nightengale tweets that Harper and the Nats have agreed to a two-year, $7.5MM contract. Jon Heyman of CBS Sports tweets that Harper will earn $2.5MM in 2015 and $5MM in 2016.

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (12/15/2014 12:30:20 PM)

MONDAY: Liriano will receive a $2MM signing bonus, $11MM in 2015 and $13MM in 2016-17, reports Jon Heyman of CBS Sports (on Twitter). His contract also calls for award bonuses, including as much as $325K per season based on Cy Young voting.

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (12/15/2014 3:22:15 PM)

MONDAY: Morales will earn $6.5MM in 2015 and $10.5MM in 2016, reports Jon Heyman of CBS Sports (on Twitter).

THURSDAY: The Royals have agreed to a two-year, $17MM deal with free agent DH Kendrys Morales. Morales can earn an additional $750K per year through performance incentives. The contract includes a mutual option for a third year.

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (12/15/2014 3:22:49 PM)

The Yankees have locked up one of their top free agent targets, as they announced on Monday the signing of third baseman Chase Headley to a four-year deal. Headley will reportedly receive $52MM over the life of the contract, and MLBTR has learned that he can earn up to $1MM each season for reaching 550 plate appearances, meaning his contract can max out at $56MM over four years.

Anderson to LAD

6:49pm: Anderson would earn the full $4MM in incentives if he reaches 200 innings, Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times tweets.

4:53pm: The incentives kick in at 150 innings pitched, Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports tweets. The Braves and Royals were also among the final teams in pursuit, he adds.

4:20pm: The Dodgers have agreed to a one-year, $10MM deal with lefty Brett Anderson, Buster Olney of ESPN.com reports on Twitter. Anderson, a client of the Legacy Agency, can earn up to $4MM in incentives through the deal, per Olney.

Black 47 -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (12/15/2014 11:33:54 PM)

The Dodgers are insane!

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (12/16/2014 8:30:33 AM)

8:13am: The sides have agreed to a two-year deal, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports on Twitter.

7:11am: The Marlins are close to a deal with free agent Michael Morse, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports tweets. Presumably, Morse would step in at first base for the Fish, where he could be a primary option or a platoon mate for Garrett Jones.

The Padres have agreed to a one-year deal with free agent righty Brandon Morrow, Corey Brock of MLB.com reports on Twitter.

Only in Cubs-land could being a LOSER be attractive

Lester said the chance of winning a World Series with a team that hasn’t done so since 1908 “just adds that little extra for me.” Questioned on the topic later, Epstein admitted the team’s long history of losing actually helped them sign Lester. “We’re not hiding the ball. The fact that we haven’t won in so long helps define who we are. It adds meaning and resonance to what we’re trying to accomplish here, and I think it attracts players who aren’t afraid of that challenge and want to be here for the right reasons and it definitely attracted Jon Lester.”

We've sucked for more than century. Come play for us and help us suck less.

Oh, and here's a metric shit-TON of money to do so.

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (12/16/2014 1:38:14 PM)

The Angels have sent reliever Kevin Jepsen to the Rays in exchange for outfielder Matt Joyce, Tim Brown of Yahoo Sports reports on Twitter.

1:17pm: Descalso will receive a $3.6MM guarantee, agent Steve Cantor tells ESPN.com’s Jerry Crasnick (Twitter link). He will earn $1.5MM this year and $2.1MM next, per SB Nation’s Chris Cotillo (via Twitter). Each contract year also includes up to $500K in attainable incentives.

1:07pm: The Rockies have signed utility infielder Daniel Descalso to a two-year deal, the club announced. Descalso, 28, was non-tendered by the Cardinals earlier in the offseason; he had been projected by MLBTR/Matt Swartz to earn $1.4MM.

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (12/16/2014 1:56:54 PM)

The Dodgers have designated reliever Brian Wilson, the club announced. The move creates roster space for the addition of Brandon McCarthy.

Made his money in a short window
A quirky character who made the most out of a couple years in the spotlight

So, you're saying that a guy who pitches with a ponytail beard is quirky? [sm=scratch.gif]

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (12/16/2014 4:29:16 PM)

The Indians have signed righty Gavin Floyd to a one-year deal, the team announced. Floyd gets a $4MM guarantee with $6MM of bonuses achievable based upon starts made and innings pitched, Chris Cotillo of SB Nation tweets.

Floyd threw last year for the Braves on a similarly-structured contract before suffering an arm fracture that ended his season early for the second season in a row.

djskillz -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (12/17/2014 2:35:38 PM)

The Dodgers basically had my (realistic) dream offseason for the starting staff. McCarthy and Anderson. With Kershaw and Greinke already in the fold. Freaking Friedman.

I see no problem with the Twins making off-season acquisitions like that.
Wait. It involves money.
I see a problem.

Yes, but as usual we've spent money. We're spending $24M on two players next season in Hunter/Santana. We could have bought McCarthy, Anderson and a $2-3M outfielder for the same price.
