I think it's just preparation time. Incredibly hard to devote enough time to both to be great at both at that level IMO.

yeah, it's so tough when they're busy playing cards in the clubhouse [:D]

SoMnFan -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (6/2/2015 9:41:19 AM)

Not asking them to be great
Just don't think those who act completely incapable, should get away with it.

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (6/2/2015 9:41:46 AM)

And those days in-between are exhausting with all the video watching and jogging to stay in shape.

Please.

If a guy wants to be a better hitter as a pitcher, he CAN take the time to work on it. Most just don't.

And for various reasons I'm sure the management (on and off field) does not push it.

Because:

1. Most will be failures as hitters

2. It's just the way it's always been done

3. Too much money invested in them as pitchers. Don't want them injuring themselves in the batter's box.

SoMnFan -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (6/2/2015 9:56:31 AM)

Mets really have piled up some arms
DeGrom is crazy good.
Huge whip action on that lively arm.

Exactly what I was getting at.
They whine about pitchers hitting, yet give them excuses to not get better at it. Jmo.

Right

Because anything, basically since the DH came into being, you get out of a pitcher is a bonus.

djskillz -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (6/2/2015 11:07:49 AM)

There's a lot easier solution to this too; DH's in both leagues. Only a matter of time.

It's basic evolution IMO. I don't want to watch a .190 hitter, just like I don't want to see a butcher in the field (DH's) or a starter go 9 all the time gassed (relievers), etc.

SoMnFan -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (6/2/2015 11:43:15 AM)

How about requiring all to be players.
Not just pitchers, not just hitters.
Be an athlete or go join a band.
That's what I'd like to see.
Just saying, in HS and Amateur ball, your best pitchers are your best fielders and your best hitters.
Why that doesn't follow thru is a choice, IMO.

djskillz -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (6/2/2015 1:39:50 PM)

How many NFL players play offense and defense? [:D]

I'm kidding, but also kind of serious. I hate no DH in both. I want to watch the best do what they do, in whatever capacity that is. I'd rather watch David Ortiz or Edgar Martinez hitting than Clayton Kershaw.

You have to admit it would have been entertaining to watch them play defense on the field too.

Actually, my teammates and I never left the football field, can't tell you how much fun that was. (small school, few numbers)
I love it when pitchers are good enough athletes to get a hit once in awhile.
They all SHOULD be.
Makes managers MANAGE as well. win-win

djskillz -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (6/2/2015 3:32:52 PM)

My point is that while that happens in HS, and "some" in college, at the highest level everything just gets more specialized. That's all I'm saying. I just don't think there's enough that can do both at that level.

SoMnFan -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (6/2/2015 4:23:16 PM)

This Joc Pederson kid for the Dodgers is tearing it up! [:-]
Longgggggg homer today.
Has hit a ton since being inserted.
These young guys do know they don't count more, the further you hit em? [:D]

SoMnFan -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (6/2/2015 4:24:48 PM)

The all-star voting is once again a joke.
Right now its basically KC vs the Cardinals.

Stud. And a great kid with a great family. Rooting for him all the way.

SoMnFan -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (6/2/2015 4:32:17 PM)

These young guys have some great swings.
They look great and appear majestic, but in reality when they are slowed down and looked at, they get the bat around quicker than ever before.
A really great crop of youngsters.

All that money spent

And it's a bargain rook/youngster that is carrying them.

I keep saying it; we are watching some phenomenal all-time-great talent in baseball these days. We should sit back and enjoy it.

SoMnFan -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (6/2/2015 10:21:15 PM)

Right on cue ... Joey Gallo comes up and rips it up for Texas.

Joey Gallo to be called up on Tuesday, Jon Daniels just said on radio

He has even more pure power than Sano. Swings and misses a lot but huge power tool.

Should be interesting.

He went deeeep already.

SoMnFan -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (6/3/2015 10:25:12 AM)

Cool to see the pics of Gallo and Bryce Harper as 3-4 hitters on their little league team together.
Pederson, Gallo, Trout, Harper, Bryant, Stanton.
Baseball is finding its replacement stars. Good to see.

Hate beating dead horses, but watching Ortiz hit last night, made me remember how much I hate watching a guy like that clog bases.
Horse apiece, pitchers who can't hit, DHs who can't run.
Make em all be athletic. That's my request.

Center fielder Andrew McCutchen’s take-home pay for his first two weeks’ worth of work in May was $427,098. That information came courtesy of a picture of his pay stub that landed on the Internet site Reddit last week after being snapped by an anonymous photographer.

Major league players are paid every other Friday, and McCutchen had the misfortune of leaving his pay stub behind in the visitors’ clubhouse at Wrigley Field on May 17 after the Pirates and the Cubs played a three-game series. McCutchen’s gross pay was $820,659 before taxes took away nearly 49%.
