Just

Wow

The representatives of free agent righty Jeff Samardzija are telling teams that the hurler already has at least one $100MM offer on the table, Jayson Stark of ESPN.com reports on Twitter. Needless to say, that’s a huge number for a pitcher coming off a down year, but speaks to his popularity among scouts and executives.

Pathetic what the real ball players down there are supposed to exist on.

On Wednesday night, the Houston Astros traded backup catcher Hank Conger to the Tampa Bay Rays for cash considerations, just minutes before the midnight deadline to tender 2016 contracts to arbitration-eligible players. The glass-half-empty take on the trade is that the Astros, who gave up two MLB–ready players to acquire Conger from the Angels last offseason, decided he wasn’t worth the $1.8 million he’s projected to earn in 2016, which is less than half of last season’s average major league salary. The positive spin is that the Rays, who aren’t known for their cash flow, decided he was worth that sum, plus the convenience fee they sent to the Astros. And that’s curious, considering that Conger’s 2015 season made him, by one measure, the most incompetent catcher of all time:

YEAR

CATCHER

STEAL ATTEMPTS

CAUGHT

2015 Hank Conger 43 2.3%
1999 Brian Banks 28 3.6
2012 Rod Barajas 99 6.1
1970 Bill Sudakis 32 6.3
1983 Luis Pujols 46 6.5
1959 Clint Courtney 30 6.7
1990 John Russell 28 7.1
2009 Chad Moeller 27 7.4
2010 Mike Redmond 27 7.4
2010 Craig Tatum 27 7.4

By all accounts, the 27-year-old Conger is a good guy: He just won an award that says so. Conger is well-liked in the clubhouse, politically conscious and a master of memes. He’s also really, really bad at throwing the baseball. Conger’s 2015 caught-stealing percentage sits atop a deeply undistinguished list of catchers who couldn’t control the running game. Forty-three runners tried to steal a base with Conger behind home plate. Forty-two succeeded, including 11 from the division-rival Rangers.

Pelfrey, 32 in January, is coming off a three-year stretch with the Twins that saw him struggle in a return from Tommy John surgery in year one, battle further arm injuries in year two but bounce back to deliver solid, if unspectacular results in his final season in Minnesota. His 2015 campaign included 164 2/3 innings of 4.26 ERA ball with 4.7 K/9, 2.5 BB/9 and a 51 percent ground-ball rate.

While Pelfrey struggled throughout most of his time in Minnesota, the 2015 season saw his average fastball velocity climb back to 93.3 mph — its fastest mark since undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2012. Pelfrey’s ground-ball rate was also the highest it’s been since his TJ operation, and if he can maintain a mark north of 50 percent, that should play well with a strong defensive double-play tandem of Jose Iglesias and Ian Kinsler behind him in Detroit. (Of course, the corner infield situation — Miguel Cabrera and Nick Castellanos — certainly leaves something to be desired, from a defensive standpoint.)

How do you ignore these numbers

last 8 starts: 1 outing 6 IP
3 outings 5 - 5.1IP

last 4 seasons, BAA of .300 or MORE
and 5 of last 10. LOWEST BAA in the NL was .275

Career OPS is .770 vs Pelfrey
Career OBP is .353
Career SLG is .417

So all that is worth 9 mill/year

Boras is one heck of a salesman.

Yup, that's very true.

twinsfan -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (12/4/2015 11:56:37 AM)

But the Royals finished. Luckily.

twinsfan -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (12/4/2015 11:58:40 AM)

The Royals are, as the headline of a story in the Kansas City Star read, "The Anti-Moneyball Team." Or as Sports Illustrated's Tom Verducci proclaimed: "Moneyball is dead." Wrong. Moneyball is alive and well, and Kansas City has quietly become one of the smartest organizations in baseball. As a result, the Royals have plenty to teach other MLB teams. It's just that the lessons are different from what most people have been talking about.

WTF Verducci? It's the new Moneyball. Stock your bullpen. Find market bargains. Verducci apparently didn't understand the essence of Moneyball.

twinsfan -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (12/4/2015 12:00:23 PM)

SO WITH ALL those decidedly average stats, exactly how did Kansas City win the World Series? By assembling undervalued players to form a devastating weapon: defense.

Defense and bullpen arms. That was the key.

Verducci is an idiot.

twinsfan -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (12/4/2015 12:01:28 PM)

MLB'S SHARPER TEAMS are already catching up with the Royals' approach. Jason Heyward, who sports a .268 career batting average, is set to snag one of this winter's richest free agent deals, in part due to defensive stats that mark him as one of the very best corner outfielders in baseball.

Time to find the new value in MLB. It's getting to be harder and harder. But someone will figure it out.

twinsfan -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (12/4/2015 12:06:35 PM)

Moneyball techniques are mostly for the regular season. It will get you to the postseason. The postseason is crapshoot time. The A's very well could have won a WS or three. I do believe the Royals kind of Moneyball has a better chance of translating to postseason success. Pitching and defense won't slump as easily as hitting can.
