What I find interesting here, is that at that time, we said, Wow, Big Kid

Nowadays, the kid that isn't Husky, stands out in the crowd.
And it isn't all the kids fault, it's BIg Food Corporations.

This young lad looks like a future 350 pounder plus. And he may get there before he graduates high school. [:@]

Well Mark,
It's Prince Fielder and he is done with HS

I was a Philips fan. This is a bummer. Great career.

And his name just came up here in the last week. The quintessential super utility player.

5+ WAR every year 1991 to 1993

Frank Thomas
Ken Griffey
Barry Bonds
Robin Ventura
Devon White
TONY PHILLIPS

Aren't magical stats like WAR wonderful? They can put an average player like Tony Phillips and put him on par with far better talent than he.

Tony Phillips was far better than average. Over 2000 hits in an 18 year career. 160 HR's, close to 900 rbi's, an ops of 763 and an ops+ of 109. And could play any position.

I don't see Robin Ventura and Devon White as head and shoulders above Tony Phillips. All three were pretty similar.

Stacey King -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (2/22/2016 12:26:42 PM)

Tony Phillips was anything but average.

Tony Phillips' career WAR was 50.8, more than Jason Giambi, David Ortiz, and David Wright.

Most walks 1992 to 1997
Barry Bonds 743
Frank Thomas 697
TONY PHILLIPS 681
Rickey Henderson 581
Jeff Bagwell 552

Highest WAR, played 1B,2B,3B,SS, all OF, & DH:

Paul Molitor 75.4
Buddy Bell 66.1
Bert Campaneris 53
Tony Phillips 50.8
Ben Zobrist 38.5

Trekgeekscott -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (2/22/2016 12:32:55 PM)

Seriously?

You guys are way too dependent on the new fangled sabremetric statistics.

There is no way Tony Phillips belongs being mentioned in the same breath as Barry Bonds, Ken Griffey Jr and Frank Thomas.

on par with White and Ventura sure...but not those three and if your stat puts him there. then the stat is worthless.

TJSweens -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (2/22/2016 12:33:04 PM)

Which only serves to underscore what a worthless stat WAR is.

EDIT: Scott beat me to it.

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (2/22/2016 3:36:26 PM)

The White Sox announced on Monday that they’ve added shortstop and former Phillies cornerstone Jimmy Rollins on a minor league contract with an invitation to Major League Spring Training. Rollins is a client of MVP Sports.

Awesome to see the new gal from the ESPN booth get in the cage and take some pretty sweet swings while her and Boonie were talking about the way Posey loads.
Could feel it was her way of becoming one of the boys ... But it worked for me.

When you look at this list, is career WAR completely useless? It rewards excellence produced over many years.

http://www.baseball-reference.com/leaders/WAR_career.shtml

Notice that Jim Rice, a person who should never have been inducted into the HOF, does not do very well in WAR.

WAR, what is it good for.......

I am working hard to make Murf's team out of ST.[;)]

Make the team? Hell, you're a 1st ballot HOFer!

You (and a few others) are definitely on the team, Miles. You're basically a founding member. And we welcome you with open arms.

McMurfy -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (2/24/2016 9:34:55 PM)

As a Chemist, Miles clearly has a Mathematical advantage over common men.
Advanced stats are good for that type of fan.
But he has never once used his math for evil.

He's like Mr Miyagi.
It's there if he needs it, but he doesn't go out looking for trouble with it, like some punk Cobra Con

djskillz -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (2/24/2016 11:34:17 PM)

I guess that's probably what's always drawn me to them, Murf. I've always been a super math guy, so I can't NOT look at the advanced stats compared to the "basic" ones.

SoMnFan -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (2/25/2016 7:59:29 AM)

This is how much of a numbers guy I am.
Every time y'all start talking WAR .... the music gets so loud in my head, that I can't think about anything else.
HUHHHH, what is it good for ....
Say it again! HUHHHHHHHH

Deep, I am not.

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (2/25/2016 11:11:53 AM)

MLB announces new timed 30-second visits to the pitcher's mound by managers and pitching coaches.

MLB has added Rule 6.01(j) on permissible slides into second base. Runners must make "bona fide attempt to reach and remain on the base."

Joe Torre and former umpire Charlie Reliford will visit #MNTwins camp Friday to discuss the rules changes.

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (2/25/2016 11:45:48 AM)

The so-called "neighborhood play" at second base will now be reviewable under the replay system for the first time, per MLB rules changes.
