Justin Turner signing for 4 years, $64 million is a bargain for the Dodgers.

That's nothing. Florimon signed with the Phils!!

Did the Phillies suddenly acquire Gardy's services? I thought he went south to Arizona.

Today In 1973: George Steinbrenner & investors buy the Yankees for $10M.

And today, they could barely afford to pay the concession workers salary for that amount.

Encarnacion going cheaply to the Tribe is the biggest move of the offseason.

His annual salary is pretty high but the length of the contract is very friendly for the Tribe. Only 3 years.

Considering his production the past 5+ years, it is a very good move by the tribe.

The 6+ year contract should really be a thing of the past. Tribe was somewhat dismissed for this upcoming year in terms of top contender with all the attention lavished onto the Red Sox (and of course the Cubs). But the Tribe have pitching and adding Encarnacion is a huge deal. Now if they lose on Napoli, it would be such a huge deal.

Cleveland QUICKLY went from worst to first
I call bullshit when people tell me we can't.
That's putting limitations on yourself and people in pro sports should not be putting limitations on themselves
Get in or get the hell out.

Umm, you actually have to make some roster changes in order for these kinds of things to happen. The Twins have been busy stocking their minor league system with scrap heap players, so that is nice.

By Jay Jaffe's WAR score, which combines career and peak WAR to compare a player to Hall of Famers at his position, Raines rates better than the average Hall of Fame left fielder, 55.6 to 53.3. In fact, both his career and peak WAR are above average.

Most similar player in the HOF: Lou Brock. By Baseball Reference's similarity scores, which use traditional stats, Brock had the most comparable career to Raines. Another speedy left fielder and leadoff man, Brock was a .293 hitter with 776 extra-base hits, 1,571 runs and 938 steals; Raines hit .294 with 713 extra-base hits, 1,571 runs and 808 steals (but was much more efficient). The advanced stats give Raines a clear edge, thanks to his getting on base at a much higher clip: Raines' 69.1 WAR is well above Brock's 45.2, and his 123 OPS+ beats Brock's 109.

Matt noted arbitration elsewhere.

Nats have to give up a big raise to Harper; on the flip-side, he's a budding star, but last year played for much less than what he could earn in MLB as a free agent. Can't even get to that point next year, yet.

The Nationals have avoided arbitration with right fielder and 2015 NL MVP Bryce Harper, tweets FanRag’s Jon Heyman. ESPN’s Buster Olney reports that Harper will receive a hefty $13.625MM salary — a massive raise over his $5MM salary from the 2016 season. Harper’s raise shattered the $9.3MM projection of MLBTR contributor Matt Swartz and stands out as the largest raise ever given to a position player that is entering his third year of arbitration eligibility. Harper will be arb-eligible once more next winter and is a free agent following the 2018 season.

I don't feel sorry for him at all, don't get me wrong, 13 mill is sweet.

But the system is so rigid, with no middle-ground available the majority of the time.

There are plenty of slugs who earn big money for doing little. That part of the process stinks. But for stars, they don't get to match or exceed salaries of those they're much better than, either.

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (1/13/2017 1:19:53 PM)

The part that really stinks to me in this system is getting to FA, and for a lot of pitchers getting that long deal, 5 or 6 years.

And rarely earning that bloated salary.

World Baseball Classic starts in about a month in a half. Can't wait! I love these guys putting it on the line for country pride. USA will have trouble because of a fairly weak pitching staff, but I think their bats are the best in the world.

twinsfan -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (1/16/2017 6:36:06 PM)

Man I love Brian Kenny. Could do without Joel Sherman as a regular on MLB Now, though. That's the challenge with these shows. How do you get 4 guys that are likeable?

Loser's limp is pretty prevalent around the Twins the past six years.

In Dec. 2014, Twins signed Hughes to an extension in which he got 9+ million for 2015 and 2016 and is scheduled for 13.2 million for 2017, 2018 and 2019.

When Twins signed Ricky Nolasco, they gave him 4 years at $49,000,00 or over 12 million a year, a portion of which we are still paying to the Angels for the Twins Angels trade.

Duffy has been injured and the length of the contract is a concern.

But I would take a decent lefty like Duffy and his contract over Nolasco's and Hughes any day of the week and the weekend.

Chicago White Sox pitching prospect Michael Kopech hit 110 mph (!!) during a max-velocity workout.

Holy Hell

José Bautista agreed to a 1-year, $18 million free agent deal with the Blue Jays, the largest 1-year free agent deal for a position player in MLB history.

JANUARY 18: The A’s have announced the deal. Plouffe gets a $5.25MM guarantee, per Jon Heyman of Fan Rag (Twitter link). He can also earn $150K upon reaching 350 plate appearances, another $300K if he gets to 450, and then $300K more if he reaches 525 trips to the plate, per Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (via Twitter). There’s also a one-time, $250K trade bonus.
