MLB
Report: Yankees Acquire Giants Outfielder Andrew McCutchen

The Yankees traded for Giants outfielder Andrew McCutchen on Thursday evening, ESPN's Buster Olney reported.
The New York Post's Joel Sherman first reported the deal was close to completion and that infield prospect Abiatal Avelino would be part of the return for San Francisco. Avelino is ranked as New York's 23rd-best prospect according to MLB.com.
McCutchen bolsters the Yankees' outfield depth ahead of a playoff push with Aaron Judge still recovering from a fractured wrist. A McCutchen trade was long rumored as the Giants fell out of the playoff hunt this month, but the team waited until nearly the last moment to part with the outfielder. Friday is the last day to trade or acquire players through waivers.

The Giants failed.

And people wonder why I follow the Yankees.
They go get the players I want. [:D]
And they need.
Without mentioning salary, weather, concessions, etc.
See need.
Try to fill need.
Its called professional team management.

SoMnFan -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (8/31/2018 9:43:43 AM)

And the Giants tried, nothing wrong with them, either.

How in the HELL can the Royales be 17 games worse than us?
Wasn't that supposed to be a helluva team for years and years?
How can you fall that fast and that hard? [:-]

I mean, we seem to be in purgatory here, but wow, 31 games out. In THIS division?

And the Royals have played the Twins well.

Bizarre.

The AL Central is a terrible baseball league and ML baseball needs to be looked at as collusion committed among the owners for its present condition.

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (9/6/2018 9:37:18 AM)

Sprained UCL; Platelet treatments.

Like the thoracic thing Hughes has, that rarely works.

Such is the case of Ohtani. Threw hard first inning Sunday, then dropped way off. Astros had guy mic'd, I think Springer, and after a HR in 2nd at ba said he was concerned, the velocity had rapidly dropped off.
Angels said he was fine Monday; now say that TJ surgery is recommended.

This goes back to shortly after signing him when there was concern about the UCL.

Though Tommy John surgery would prevent Ohtani from pitching in 2019, Angels general manager Billy Eppler left no doubt that the Halos still view him as a two-way player in the long run when speaking to reporters in a conference call (link via the OC Register’s Jeff Fletcher).

“We do still see him as a two-way player,” said Eppler. “Shohei has demonstrated the ability to be impactful on both sides of the baseball and that is something that we, and I don’t want to speak for every other team, but I think every team would want impact in the batter’s box and on the mound.”

Eppler didn’t want to commit to the possibility of Ohtani serving as a regular designated hitter for the Angels next year. However, Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports spoke with four surgeons who “regularly repair torn UCLs,” with each expressing the belief that Ohtani can indeed serve as the Angels’ DH next season — even while recovering from Tommy John surgery. Certainly, each case is unique, but Passan’s column provides a detailed walkthrough of just how and why those medical professionals believe it to be possible.

And, if there was any question as to whether Ohtani can make an impact at the plate as his right elbow mends, the 24-year-old may have given the most emphatic answer possible last night; just hours after the announcement that surgery was recommended, Ohtani went 4-for-4 with a pair of home runs, a walk and a stolen base (video link).

Sept. 5: Tommy John surgery has been “recommended” for Angels starter/DH Shohei Ohtani after an MRI revealed additional damage to his ulnar collateral ligament, the club announced (h/t Jeff Fletcher of the Southern California News Group, on Twitter). It is not yet certain whether he will undergo the surgery, but it certainly sounds as if that will be the case.

Ohtani, 24, has amply justified the hype that formed when it became clear he’d be coming to the majors in advance of the 2018 season. Though some questions formed during his showing in Spring Training, Ohtani has been outstanding both on the mound and at the plate.

While Ohtani has continued to knock the cover off the ball since being diagnosed with a second-degree UCL sprain earlier this year, that development led to obvious concern as to his outlook as a pitcher. He was able to make it back for one outing, showing his typical upper-nineties heat before suddenly dropping off in the third inning.

Whether or not the additional UCL damage occurred during the outing, the fact is that Ohtani will almost certainly miss the entirety of the 2019 season — as a pitcher, that is. Typically, position players are able to return from this particular injury on a much shorter timeline.

It’s important to bear in mind here just why Ohtani was put back on the hill late in a season in which the club was already out of contention. Having received platelet-rich plasma and stem cell treatment, and completed a course of rest and rehabilitation, Ohtani was deemed ready to test the ligament. Had Ohtani instead waited until next spring to take the bump, only then to find that it could not withstand full-throttle pitching, then the recovery timeline would have prevented him from hitting for much or all of the 2019 season and perhaps forced his pitching rehab to push into the 2020 campaign.

The good news for the Angels here is that they are still playing with house money so far as Ohtani is concerned. Because he chose to cross the Pacific before he was eligible to sign outside of the existing MLB international spending caps, he has been limited to a relatively meager signing bonus and the MLB minimum salary. The organization still possesses five full seasons of control beyond the present one.

Still, it’s another hugely disappointing injury for an organization that has had more than its fair share of late. Having already dealt with numerous pitching injuries in recent seasons, this year’s Halos roster went without players such as Zack Cozart, Garrett Richards, and Matt Shoemaker for long stretches. While Shoemaker is now back on track to be a factor in 2019, Richards will hit the open market after succumbing to TJS this summer. The Angels’ front office will face a difficult task in putting together a competitive rotation.

Looking ahead for Ohtani, the news will no doubt re-spark the debate as to whether he would be able to perform as both a pitcher and a hitter at the game’s highest level. Some may now wonder whether that effort will be shelved. But it’s frankly hard to imagine either player or team desiring to cut short what has thus far been an unbelievably successful attempt. In his first attempt at the major leagues, Ohtani has turned in 274 plate appearances of .276/.355/.547 hitting, with 16 home runs and six steals, along with 51 2/3 innings of 3.31 ERA pitching, supported by 11.0 K/9 against 3.8 BB/9.

If anything, perhaps, Ohtani and the Halos will need to assess just how to allow him to perform with the bat in 2018 without jeopardizing his throwing rehab. With nearly six months to go before camp opens, there’s plenty of time for a plan to be mapped out. Though we’ll all be robbed of a chance to see Ohtani’s amazing two-way spectacle for the time being, there’s still reason to hope he’ll be able to resume the grand experiment in 2020.

This is hilarious

Tigers announcers reportedly involved in 'physical altercation'

Baseball broadcasters are paid to say interesting words about the game and have decent on-air chemistry. They are not, however, paid to be friends with each other. Some are natural friends, but others are very much not.

Detroit Tigers broadcasters Mario Impemba and Rod Allen are definitely on the “not friends” train. Katie Strang of The Athletic reported Thursday that Impemba and Allen got into an “altercation” that resulted in their absence from Wednesday’s broadcast.

“ Multiple sources told The Athletic that neither Impemba nor Allen were part of Wednesday’s broadcast due to a physical altercation between the two television personalities following Tuesday’s game in Chicago against the White Sox. It is not immediately clear what prompted the attack.

Details of what happened during the reported altercation aren’t known, but one source who spoke to the Detroit Free Press described it as “severe.” The pair were broken up by a third party.

Impemba has been the play-by-play announcer for Tigers TV broadcasts since 2002. Allen, who spent five years in the majors, has been one of the Tigers color analysts for 15 seasons. Off the air (and sometimes on it), the two are not known to be close, or even very friendly. Strang said that there has been “simmering tension” between the two for some time, resulting from their opposing personalities and broadcast styles.

Allen and Impemba went back to Detroit after the reported altercation, but their travel arrangements were made so the two would not be traveling together. They were replaced on the broadcast by Matt Shepard and former MLB player Kirk Gibson.

Strang contacted Fox Sports Detroit about the incident, and general manager Greg Hammaren didn’t say much, but he didn’t deny that the altercation happened.

“ “My only comment is this we are addressing an internal matter and we will not have any further comment at this time.”

The Detroit Free Press reported that Impemba and Allen will meet with Fox Sports Detroit’s executives on Thursday to determine what should happen in light of the incident

As far as Dick Bremer is concerned, not sure how he cap so eagerly hop into the broadcast booth for next season knowing what a shit-show it will be from day one. This season had high expectations. Playoff chance was anticipated. There is NOTHING to look forward to in 2019.

Bad news for White Sux

Michael Kopech will likely undergo Tommy John surgery after tests revealed a tear in his UCL. He is expected to be ready for Spring Training in 2020.

He will receive a second opinion in the days coming to confirm today’s diagnosis.

On Tuesday, deGrom registered his 26th straight start allowing three runs or fewer, surrendering just two runs across seven innings against the Marlins. The previous record was set by Leslie "King" Cole in 1908. It took 108 years for his mark to be topped. Once again though, the Mets handed their ace a tough-luck loss. deGrom's record dropped to 8-9 on the year.
His quality outing actually raised his league-leading ERA from 1.68 to 1.71. Such is life for a top Cy Young Award candidate. It would still be the lowest single-season ERA for a pitcher since Zack Greinke finished the 2015 season with a 1.66 figure for the Dodgers.
deGrom has dazzled this year, whiffing 230 batters through 188 innings in 28 apppearances entering Tuesday.

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (9/12/2018 1:48:10 PM)

The left-handed hitting Palka, who was claimed off waivers from Minnesota on Nov. 4, 2017, ranks third among American League rookies with 22 home runs, 57 RBIs and 39 extra-base hits (tied). His 22 homers are tied with Pete Ward (1963) for the most by a left-handed hitting rookie in White Sox history.
According to Statcast™, Palka's 108.6-mph average exit velocity on his home runs is third-highest in MLB of the 213 hitters with 10-plus homers. He narrowly trails Giancarlo Stanton (108.8) and Gary Sanchez (108.7).

They chose to leave out the fact that in 108 games, Palka has 130 strikeouts and is hitting all of .239 with OBP of .288

Those types of numbers were what Palka generated in AAA, which is why the Twins let him go.
