Cubs are announcing that no one they have is untouchable.
Interesting

We're talking about a group that includes Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo, Javier Baez, Willson Contreras, Kyle Schwarber and Addison Russell. Not to mention pitchers such as Jose Quintana and even Craig Kimbrel.

Here I thought they were poised to win the next 10 WS titles.

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (11/13/2019 2:12:56 PM)

Kimbrel sucked

They want to shed some salary

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (11/13/2019 2:14:15 PM)

Theo has some work to do without Madden

Big year coming up for him

That is a lot to pay for a pitcher who throws one inning about two-three times per week.

twinsfan -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (11/19/2019 8:28:08 AM)

Here are players appearing on the HOF ballot for the first time:

Bobby Abreu
Josh Beckett
Heath Bell
Eric Chavez
Adam Dunn
Chone Figgins
Rafael Furcal
Jason Giambi
Raul Ibanez
Derek Jeter
Paul Konerko
Cliff Lee
Carlos Pena
Brad Penny
J.J. Putz
Brian Roberts
Alfonso Soriano
Jose Valverde

Are any other first-timers worthy?

As far as the non-Jeter portion of the rookie class, there are no other slam-dunk selections. Using the Bill James Hall of Fame Monitor -- a rough scale in which a player scoring over 100 is likely to be inducted and a player under 100 is less likely -- these are the first-timers with the highest scores:

Jason Giambi: 108

Alfonso Soriano: 105

Bobby Abreu: 95

Paul Konerko: 80

Adam Dunn: 75

Cliff Lee: 72

Within that group, Giambi was the 2000 AL MVP who hit 440 homers with 2,010 hits and 1,441 RBIs in his 20 seasons. Soriano totaled 2,095 hits and 412 homers with a .500 slugging percentage and 289 steals. Abreu hit 288 homers with 1,363 RBIs, 574 doubles and 400 stolen bases in his 18-season career. Konerko had 2,340 hits, 439 homers and 1,412 RBIs and helped lead the White Sox to their first World Series title in 88 years in 2005. Dunn hit 462 homers across 14 seasons, to go with a .364 career on-base percentage. Lee was the 2008 AL Cy Young winner, and he had a 118 career ERA+ as well as an impressive postseason career, with a 2.52 ERA in 11 starts.

Of the holdovers, Curt Schilling (8th year on the ballot) has the best chance of joining Jeter as an inductee. Schilling appeared on 60.9% of ballots last year.

It's Larry Walker's final (10th) year on the ballot. He appeared on 54.6% of ballots last year, so he would need a really big jump to get to 75% this time. However, he did jump from 34% to 54.6% last year.

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (11/19/2019 9:06:43 AM)

So it’s Jeter and ?? Getting in

TJSweens -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (11/19/2019 9:14:42 AM)

Underwhelming class, outside of Jeter. Giambi is a cheaten ass bastard. Schilling is a monumental douche bag (which is not grounds for disqualification). Konerko was a great leader and very good ball player, but I don't know that I consider him Hall worthy. I really have no problem with Jeter going in alone.

I think Schilling gets in this year. It's a weaker ballot than most years with 4 players being voted in last year. It's kinda hard to justify not putting Schilling on the ballot.

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (11/19/2019 9:43:09 AM)

Schilling should get booed at his acceptance speech

That would be worth watching

Agreed it’s not a stud class

I would put Walker in way before Giambi and Konerko

And I’m not that big on him going in

SoMnFan -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (11/19/2019 9:53:52 AM)

Derek Jeeeeeeeetahhhhhhhhhhhh
Enjoyed the hell out of that career.

Agreed Ed. As far as I am concerned, the HOF has become watered down as it is. It used to honor the elite players that stood out from the others. Now it seems to be enough to have been "pretty good".

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (11/19/2019 3:05:34 PM)

Felipe Vasquez now facing 21 felony count

His career be over

Sounds like you could get him cheap.
Somebody the Twins would pursue...

TOKYO -- The "Baby Shark" is moving to Japan.
Outfielder Gerardo Parra has agreed to a contract with the Central League champion Yomiuri Giants, the team said Tuesday.
A two-time Gold Glove winner and a backup for this year's World Series champion Washington Nationals, the 32-year-old outfielder has a .276 batting average with 88 home runs and 522 RBIs over 11 major league seasons.

Yup. Matt would entertain Brad Radke as a HOF player. And Scott Baker becoming a 50%+ vote getter. Of course, Joe Mauer is a first ballot guy. [&o]

The Padres and Brewers have broken open a quiet trade market with an interesting swap of young big leaguers. Outfielder Trent Grisham and righty Zach Davies are heading to San Diego, with second baseman Luis Urias and southpaw Eric Lauer going to Milwaukee in exchange.

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (11/27/2019 2:07:20 PM)

Has been quiet

Some believe a lot will get going by the meetings that start December 8th

The Rangers have announced the dimensions for Globe Life Field via a press release posted to Twitter by Sam Blum of the Dallas Morning News. The 2020 season will mark the Rangers’ first in their new ballpark in Arlington after 26 seasons in the stadium original known, aptly, as the Ballpark In Arlington. Globe Life Field is set to open officially on March 23, 2020, just across the street from Globe Life Park.
The distances of the wall from home plate has been orchestrated with a rather inventive flourish to honor players whose numbers have been retired by the Rangers. The new park will be 329 feet down the left field line, to honor Adrian Beltre’s #29, 407 feet to straight away centerfield, in honor of Ivan Rodriguez’s #7, 410 feet to the deepest parts of the ballpark just to the left and right of dead center, in honor of Michael Young’s #10, and 326 feet down the right field line, in honor of Johnny Oates’ #26, who managed the club from 1995 to 2001.
Franchise history is also immortalized in the power alleys: 372 feet to the left field power alley to commemorate the team’s first year in Arlington (1972) and 374 feet to the right field power alley to commemorate The Turnaround Gang, the 1974 squad that went from 59 to 84 wins to record the first winning season in Rangers’ team history. The walls will be eight feel tall from foul pole to foul pole. Not to be forgotten, there will also be a distance marker 334 feet from home plate in left to honor Nolan Ryan’s #34.

Marvin Miller and Ted Simmons have been elected to the HOF by the Veterans Committee. Good choices. Simmons probably should have been voted in by the writers back in the day.

https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/simmote01.shtml

I doubt Mauer will have to wait as long as Simmons did.[8|]

twinsfan -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (12/9/2019 8:30:31 AM)

“There’s never too long a time to wait if you finally make the leap,” Simmons said. “Today I did.”

He did it, he acknowledged, with the help of the analytics community. While the switch-hitting Simmons had strong attributes in the traditional sense -- 2,472 career hits, 483 doubles, 248 homers, 1,389 RBIs, eight All-Star selections over 21 seasons with the Cardinals, Brewers and Braves, and a World Series appearance with Milwaukee in 1982 – the deeper appreciation only arrived as stats like on-base percentage and Wins Above Replacement became a part of the regular parlance.

Simmons’ 50.3 career WAR (per Baseball Reference) makes him one of just nine catchers with 50 or more. The other eight -- Johnny Bench, Gary Carter, Iván Rodriguez, Carlton Fisk, Gabby Hartnett, Yogi Berra, Mike Piazza and Bill Dickey -- are all already in the Hall. Simmons, meanwhile, lasted just one year on the BBWAA ballot after netting 3.7% of the vote in 1994.

“If it weren’t for the analytics people, my career as a potential Hall of Famer probably would have been shut down and forgotten a long time ago,” Simmons said. “When they started talking about on-base percentage and WAR and how WAR was comprised, it became a real study and then the real comparisons started to develop.”

The New York Yankees have offered Gerrit Cole a contract worth more than the record-breaking seven-year, $245 million deal that Stephen Strasburg and the Washington Nationals agreed to Monday, sources told ESPN's Buster Olney.
It is unclear specifically what the Yankees offered to Cole, who also reportedly has attracted interest from the Los Angeles Angels and Los Angeles Dodgers.
ESPN's Jeff Passan reported last week that signing Cole was the Yankees' top offseason priority, and that general manager Brian Cashman has ownership-level approval to offer the right-hander a record-setting deal.
Strasburg's deal with the Nationals surpasses the previous high for a pitcher's contract, set by David Price when he signed a seven-year, $217 million deal with the Boston Red Sox.
Strasburg also has the highest annual average value, eclipsing Zack Greinke's $31.5 million. Both records might not last long, however, given the interest in Cole from the Yankees and other teams.
