Terrible. Take all of Alex Cora's WS titles away.

RIP Don Larsen, one of the greatest of all-time.

Don Larsen, forever famous for pitching the only perfect game in World Series history, died Wednesday at age 90.

I have a friend who is a bar owner in my area. About 20 years ago, he shared a story with me about one of the times he was in Cooperstown. This was in the 80's ifI remember correctly, so that would have made Larsen in his mid-50s (about where I am now). He was at a party somewhere and Larsen was there, passed out on a chair, legs spread eagle, with a huge piss stain on his pants. Rock on, dude!

I am going to have to ask my friend the next time I see him. I could be mis-remembering, but I am pretty sure I am not.
It could have been my friend was the one passed out, spread eagle on a chair with a gigantic piss stain and Larsen saw him and woke him up.

Either way.....I am glad it never came to that for me[&:]

It will be very interesting to see if Walker and Schilling get in. Remember, Marvin Miller and Ted Simmons are already in this year via the Modern Baseball Era Committee.

I can't wait for tomorrow's announcement!

------------------------------------------------------------------

Former Expos, Rockies and Cardinals slugger Larry Walker is in his 10th and final year of eligibility.

Derek Jeter is as slam-dunk a candidate as it gets; the only question is whether he will join his former Yankees teammate, Mariano Rivera, as the second player in history to be voted to the Hall unanimously.

Walker’s hopes, on the other hand, are very much up in the air. He’s firmly in “toss-up” mode, having appeared on 85.4% of public ballots through Sunday (as tracked by Ryan Thibodaux, aka @NotMrTibbs on Twitter) but likely facing less support from voters who prefer to keep their ballots private. Walker came into his final ballot year likely needing to “flip” about 44.9% of his “no” votes from 2019 into “yes” votes, and he had flipped 54.9% of those votes known to the public through Sunday. Various Hall of Fame forecasts have him right on the bubble, so stay tuned.

Three more longtime holdovers -- Curt Schilling, Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens -- are also trending right around the 75% threshold on public ballots, but they have historically garnered much less support from private voters. So, this year appears to be a two-horse race with Jeter and Walker.

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (1/20/2020 2:32:18 PM)

Jeter and Bonds

Or Clemens or both

Then you have the headline

Jeter and Cheater get into the Hall

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (1/21/2020 9:11:12 AM)

Speculation and ballots made public have Walker falling short by a few ballots:

Apparently Peter Gammons only voted Jeter, reasoning he should be the only one in when voted in.compared to Jordan and Gretzky.

Ummm

Yeah he was a great player

But really.?

Gammons must be losing it.

That would suck for Walker. Link?

SoMnFan -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (1/21/2020 9:42:58 AM)

Jeter should be unanimous, imo.

I’ve been following this guy on Twitter who has focused in the hof in addition to being a Twins techno sheep

Agreed

But the only one?

Maybe

Again he was great

But he didn’t do as much for baseball as Gretzky and Jordan in theirs.

JMO

SoMnFan -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (1/21/2020 9:57:09 AM)

See your point Ed
Not a game-changer, or a high number producer
But in all other areas, no-brainer, imo.
Highest possible scores in morals, leadership, success, being an example, self-motivation, sacrifice for a team, etc …
Lets face it, each fan looks at players differently, what they brought to the table, what they did with it.
His end results were about as good as could have been expected. Rivera the opposite in some ways, more number-related.
Its a good balance, those two.

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (1/21/2020 10:01:32 AM)

No doubt he was the driving force in the engine that cranked out some titles.

I’ve believed he would be unanimous since retiring

Read some speculation into future classes

ARod labeled a cheater that won’t get in

But Ortiz only has a small cloud over his candidacy

And may have to wait a year

BS

If Ortiz goes in
Put Bonds Clemens and ARod in too

I agree

But Jeter to baseball similar to Gretzky to hockey

Gammons is making a huge stretch.

I am ok with Jeter compared to Jordan since BB has also had other stars who have dominated and won championships like Russel, Magic, Bird, etc.

But I still think there is only one Gretzky in hockey.

*Walker hit .313/.400/.565 in his career. The only players in baseball history who qualified for the Hall of Fame (appeared in at least 10 years in the majors) and slashed .300/.400/.550 were Babe Ruth, Manny Ramirez, Jimmie Foxx, Frank Thomas, Ted Williams, Lou Gehrig, Stan Musial, Hank Greenberg, Rogers Hornsby and, yes, Walker. Only Walker and Ramirez aren't in the Hall and Ramirez has two PED suspensions. Walker has zero.

*Now is about the time people bring up Walker playing home games in Coors Field since he spent a big portion of his career with the Rockies. First off, nearly all players hit worse on the road. In Walker's career, he hit .282/.372/.501 away from Coors Field. Did you know Dave Winfield hit .283/.353/.475 in his entire career?

*Further, OPS+ factors in ballpark and era conditions. Adjusting for ballpark and league hitting averages, Walker posted a 141 OPS+ through his career, meaning he was 41 percent better than the average hitter. Vladimir Guerrero was 140 in his career. Reggie Jackson? 139. Al Kaline and Paul Waner were at 134 with Tony Gwynn at 132. Winfield and Roberto Clemente both finished with a 130 OPS+. This isn't to say Walker was a better player than these Hall of Fame right fielders. It is to say dismissing him as a Coors Creation is foolish.

*Walker's black ink includes three batting titles. He also led the league in OBP, slugging and OPS twice. He led in doubles, homers and total bases once.

*Walker won the 1997 MVP while also winning seven Gold Gloves and three Silver Sluggers.

*He never won a ring, but Walker hit .357/.438/.929 in his only World Series appearance (2004 Cardinals).

Gammons was on High Heat. It looked like he had multiple players he voted for.

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (1/21/2020 1:18:33 PM)

Ok my bad

I read but not well enough

Gammons dropped Walker
Another writer has Jeter as a near deity
And a third didn’t vote for Walker because his stats are skewed by Coors field - even though roughly only 31 percent were in his career

I don't think Sid has a vote anymore
but
some of the sportswriters are as dumb as Sid like the ones who thought Coors field skewed Walker's results.

How about Fenway skewing Jim Rice's stats

Or recognizing that when the wind blows out at Wrigley, all offensive stats are skewed. If players had more days playing in Wrigley when the wind blows out, then don't let them into the hall.

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (1/21/2020 2:45:14 PM)

Walker on Twitter thinks he’s short votes.

Will have to go in via veterans committee if so, his last ballot year.

Phil Riewer -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (1/21/2020 3:25:22 PM)

Schilling was on MLB yesterday or day before.....he has not aged gracefully; didn't he have cancer a couple of times?

You are correct. He voted for 6 players, I believe. But for some reason he dropped Larry Walker because he didn't want him to get in with Jeter. Gammons voted for Walker in past years. Weird.

twinsfan -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (1/21/2020 3:51:53 PM)

How can these HOF trackers narrow it down to 3 votes? Unless they are getting a lot of inside info from so-called private voters? It makes no sense to me.

twinsfan -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (1/21/2020 3:55:47 PM)

Based on Walker's tweet, do you think these guys are given a heads-up hours before the official announcement?
