Early framing numbers from Gary Sánchez's new catching stance are indicating some improvement over last year, especially at the bottom of the zone. So, what's the deal?

Athletic.com story

Sanchez has a new coach...one of the Twins' guys that moved up. He helped Fred out a lot.

Ricky J -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (8/18/2020 10:08:54 AM)

But from our view - can it really be that different from behind the catcher. Some of those pull backs into the zone are SOOOO obvious. What it says is, "this ball is out of the zone so I'm pulling it back in so you can call it a strike."

We really are missing a good part of the game not getting a view from behind the plate

twinsfan -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (8/18/2020 1:05:32 PM)

I gotta say that was totally against baseball's unwritten rules. I've seen people saying "What, now we're making up NEW unwritten rules?"

uhhhhhh...it's always been that way. When's the last time you saw a guy hit a 3-0 grand slam when you already have a 7-run lead. I have no issue with the Rangers being pissed at Tatis. Cheap way to get your first major league Grand Slam. Do it like your daddy did. Hit 2 in the same inning, not on 3-0 counts with a 7-run lead, and then get back to me.

Rangers manager Chris Woodward on Fernando Tatis Jr. swinging 3-0 on his grand slam: "I didn't like it personally. You're up by 7 in the 8th inning, it's typically not a good time 3-0. It's kind of the way we were all raised in the game. But ... the norms are being challenged."

Padres manager said he missed the sign [;)]

Too bad. IMO more guys should be pounding the 3-0 slop for hits/hr's

but

Those unwritten rules

What if you make an out on 3-0? THE HORROR!!!

Never heard of that unwritten rule. Pitch better, they are pro's.

Really??? Where you been?

And make sure you stay off Matt's lawn.

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (8/18/2020 1:21:49 PM)

Two opinions differing from Matt's traditional stand:

Everyone wonders why baseball has a marketing problem with younger fans. Then they proceeded complain about a young up and coming start hitting a grand slam.

That’s it, that’s why.

Stop complaining about unwritten rules, and start celebrating stars when they do cool things.

If you get into 3-0 count with a big lead you should respectfully forfeit your at-bat and head back to the dugout.

No running out ground balls in this situation either. Don't be such a try-hard.

As an OF, let fly balls drop untouched so the batter can feel good about himself.

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (8/18/2020 1:22:55 PM)

Delino DeShields

The year I stole 101 bags in the minor leagues if we were up by a lot and I got on base and the pitcher picked over knowing I wasn’t gonna steal guess what... I was stealing. Y’all want baseball to be fun again then “let the kids play” if you don’t like it do better.

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (8/18/2020 1:23:47 PM)

Jim Bowden

Let's be real. It's 2020.There are no unwritten rules in #MLB. If it's not in writing, it's not a rule. Young people are turning to baseball more than ever..players like Fernando Tatis Jr. are the reason.Keep swinging 3-0.Keep hitting homers.Keep showing your flash. Keep smiling.

Jim and Delino, stay off Matt's lawn please.

SoMnFan -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (8/18/2020 1:24:46 PM)

Pretty much nailed.

There's a big difference between taking extra bases/stealing/moving up …. and continuing to play the game out.
Tatis got a cookie and drilled it
Don't throw the cookie

Texas Rangers pitcher Ian Gibaut, who threw a pitch at Manny Machado after Fernando Tatis Jr.'s grand slam in Monday night's game, has been suspended three games.

Rangers manager Chris Woodward also received a one-game suspension "as a result of Gibaut's actions," MLB said in a statement on Tuesday.

Was Tatis supposed to not swing hard? I have a hard time figuring out what he did to upset them?

Acting like he shouldn't have swung at that 3-0 pitch is idiotic. It's one of the most favorable situations to swing ever.

Get Thom Brennaman sensitivity training.

Have him sit out the rest of the baseball season.

And give him another shot.

Marv Albert was given another chance.

Brennaman, who calls Reds games for FOX Sports Ohio as well as some national games for FOX Sports, appeared to be unaware that the broadcast of a Reds-Royals game in Kansas City had returned from commercial break when he was heard referring to someplace as "the fag capital of the world."

I don't understand homophobia or racism. I heard the word enough growing up, but knew enough that it was unacceptable language. And that was in the 80s. How a 56 year old "professional" still uses the word is beyond unfathomable to me. He must hang out in a lot of hunting cabins, as that's where this type of language is deemed acceptable. Sad really.

twinsfan -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (8/20/2020 9:12:05 AM)

The Padres have hit grand slams in three straight games for the first time in franchise history. The last National League team to do so? The Cleveland Spiders, who did it against the Boston Beaneaters from June 15-17, 1895.

We used to have some great picnics, watching those Spider/Beaneater tilts back in the day.

Curt Schilling got arrested for fraud with Trump crony Steve Bannon. They took donations for building a border wall and then embezzled the money.

Was Schilling actually arrested? I haven't found confirmation.
