Jordany Valdespin went down fighting.

According to a Mets source, the volatile utilityman, upon learning he had been demoted to Triple-A Las Vegas on Saturday, got into a confrontation with Terry Collins, during which he called the manager a “c--ksucker.”

The source said Valdespin, in the course of his heated exchange with Collins, also tried to invent an injury and demanded to be placed on the disabled list.

By the time the clubhouse opened to reporters in the aftermath of the Mets’ 4-2 loss to the Pirates, the 25-year-old Valdespin had regained composure, but had tears in his eyes.

It’s hardly the first time Valdespin has been involved in controversy during his brief career. The most recent incident occurred in May, when he showboated after hitting a home run in a game against the Pirates in which the Mets were getting buried. The next day, Valdespin was sent to the plate as a pinch-hitter and got drilled in apparent retaliation.

Last year, Valdespin angered teammates by wearing a white T-shirt on the team bus, in violation of the dress code. Valdespin later returned to his locker to find the words “El Hombre” written on the shirt, which was mangled.

12:51pm: Kaplan is hearing that Garza will be moved by Saturday, though the Cubs will still make sure that someone meets their price as opposed to rushing a trade. One AL scout tells Kaplan that the Cubs are in a "phenomenal spot to land a tremendous deal" because Garza has looked so strong of late (Twitter links).

12:46pm: Following his recent string of success, teams are willing to engage Cubs president Theo Epstein and GM Jed Hoyer in serious trade talks over the All-Star break, according to David Kaplan of CSN Chicago. A former general manager told Kaplan on Sunday that it's become "crystal clear" to other teams that Garza is at 100 percent.

A second "significant industry source" told Kaplan that the Rangers, Blue Jays and Indians are all involved in talks for Garza, but that the Cardinals are the dark horse in the pursuit of Garza. St. Louis saved loads of money by letting Albert Pujols walk, and their farm system is rife with high-upside prospects. Hoyer and Epstein will have no problem dealing Garza within the division, writes Kaplan, though he cautions that the Cardinals themselves (as well as the Pirates) may be hesitant to deal top prospects to a division rival.

Garza, 29, has a 3.17 ERA with 7.9 K/9, 2.5 BB/9 and a 39.8 percent ground-ball rate in 71 innings for the Cubs this season, his final year before free agency.

The O's were floundering.
Desperately needed a change in direction.
Enter Buck Showalter
The Indians had started to regress back into terrible again, needed a change.

Gene was a hoops stud at Waseca when I was a young whipper-snapper and remember him leading them to the State Basketball Tournament back when it was a big deal, when there weren't so many Classes. Vaguely recall seeing them losing their opening round game on TV wearing some cool blue jerseys.

I am from New Ulm.

Terry Steinbach-memory:

The 3 Steinbach brothers were baseball studs from young on, Terry the youngest. The memory I always think of with him is in like 3rd or 4th grade t-ball league, Terry's team lost a heart-breaker, close game in the play-offs (or championship game) and Terry taking the loss especially hard. Crying at the conclusion of the game.

But based upon offensive statistics, Mauer should be batting 8th or even 9th.

I've said for a long time ... We have some very good 7-8-9 hitters
Unfortunately in our lineup, they hit 2-3-4

by trading Garza the Cubs and Wrigley field grounds crew will save millions on that field drying agent they use when it rains as well.

How unfortunate for Revere to break his foot and probably miss 6-8 weeks. He was hitting .347 since May 1 and .407 since June 12.

Great celebration of Riveras career last night.
Has been one unique dude.
He's unlike anyone, and much better than anyone.

Some great pitchers in both leagues, no worry about that after last night.
Shut down some great hitters.
Felt to me like Papi was the "who doesn't belong" guy in the AL.
Fun to see all the talent, and they played hard or the most part.

A little bummed Perkins didn't get in.

Nathan needed a straw hat and suspenders, would fit in with some of area's Amish residents.

Mo as MVP is a SA-LUTE to his career. Really wasn't anyone who stood out. Good enough choice.

What a team the Twins could have had.

Of course, no pitching. Johan's arm would have been amputated, Garza would have an artifical tongue, Lohse would have screws in his hand from punching doors.

Even if you had 2/3 of that trio, how much better the staff would be.
Add in 4 of those bats?
They'd be a real tem.

WHY!?! If the team was better they'd end up in the playoffs. All those stressful games at the end of the regular season. Extra travel. Addional games AFTER the season is done.

Think of all of that extra work.

Always excited to see a guy like Perk hang around the leagues best for a couple days.
Some guys really soak it in and use it as motivation.
The games best just simply do things differently. Gotta be great to pick those brains and learn those habits.
