KC releases Brad Penny

Hochevar bypasses rest, will undergo TJ surgery.

Any word on James Andrews' opinion? [:D]

Saw a blurb in the paper today -- turns out the Twins haven't been completely unsuccessful in resting UCL -- Kepler rested his last year and it worked out. So, 1 for 6!

Correction. 1 for 7.

Brad Penny apparently made it easy for KC to release him

Penny reportedly punched a wall and injured his non-throwing hand after having what was described as a "dismal" outing Thursday for the Kansas City Royals in Cactus League play. The club released Penny, a right-hander who has not pitched in the majors since 2012, on Friday.

The Red Sox offer an official apology following the big uproar this week re: Boston not making sure to field a legitimate MLB roster during a ST game this week.
Can we just send out a blanket apology to cover the whole year?. [:D]

Oh, LENIII...

5. Who should vote for the Hall of Fame and why?

Neal: No wonder you asked me to be on this panel (ha!). Look, I'm biased, but I think the BBWAA does an excellent job with Hall of Fame voting. Some fans might not like how some players need 15 years to be elected, or that haven't voted for certain players from the steroid era. But how many players are in the Hall right now who shouldn't be? I think we've gotten it right for the most part. We're open to tinkering with parts of the process -- we have a committee looking into that right now -- and there's a Veterans Committee to elect anyone it feels we've overlooked. I think the reaction to this year's vote reflects the passion that fans still have for this game. You don't experience the same reactions to Hall of Fame voting among the other major sports

Will be very interesting to see how this works out, with Barry Bonds trying to help hitters in the Giants camp.
Nobody swung it better.
Will be interesting to hear if he can help others.

Funny response, BoSox arrogance.

Just like one of their writers, who figures every stud player should consider Boston as a place to play.

Sunday's column, suggested Giancarlo Stanton as the latest.

What's particulary amusing is that through this last ten years of success for Boston, not a huge amount of it has come from big FA deals.

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (3/11/2014 10:58:51 AM)

And now there is Archie Bradley.
Bradley is the powerful righthander for the Arizona Diamondbacks who has created the most buzz of any young player this spring. He is just 21 years old, has thrown only 21 games above A ball and has thrown just 6⅓ innings this spring. And yet he has been so impressive in camp that he just may be writing his own ticket to a spot in Arizona's Opening Day rotation. He has struck out nine of the 26 batters he has faced while allowing only three hits and no runs.
Bradley's path to the big leagues may open if Bronson Arroyo, who has been sidelined with a bulging disk in his back, needs more time to build his arm strength. But Arizona general manager Kevin Towers has been so impressed with Bradley that he said he hasn't ruled out carrying him regardless of what happens with Arroyo, who is penciled into a rotation with Patrick Corbin, Trevor Cahill, Wade Miley and Brandon McCarthy.

Man, we should have splurged on Arroyo. Guy is hurt [:D]

Braves right-hander Kris Medlen received his MRI results Tuesday and consulted with team doctors before GM Frank Wren addressed the media. David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution was on-hand as Wren revealed to the public that the MRI showed "some involvement in the ligament." However, MRIs on patients that have already undergone Tommy John surgery are difficult to read, and Medlen will therefore undergo further tests and meet with Dr. James Andrews to get another opinion before determining if surgery is required.

That quack Andrews will probably advise rest.

That's pretty crazy. Wish our pitchers would hit a batter once in a while. 3 in a row is extreme, I admit.

The guy has no fear -- it's not like he was putting down some no-names -- it was Pujols, Freese, and Kendrick.

Suffice it to say, the league won't be messing with one Scott Baker anytime soon, that's for sure.

Ervin Santana already has a locker in the #Braves clubhouse. Official announcement will be made within an hour.

bparlin -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (3/12/2014 9:09:17 AM)

A couple thoughts on Santana.

- The guy has balls. Reportedly turning down a multiple year deal for a 1 year contract in hopes of improving his value AFTER coming off a career year! Buster Olney reported that a lot of teams were put off by Santana's medicals and the fact he threw a ton of sliders last year. Some think his elbow is a ticking time bomb.

- That being said, did I want the Twins to sign him? Yes. It's not my freakin' money and he's better than Deduno/Gibson/Diamond. Although, I don't really believe the Twins were in any serious talks with him.

Balls or craziness, agree.

I have no doubt the Twins offered him a three year deal. I have no doubt they were well aware there was no chance he was interested at what they were offering. I also wouldn't call that serious talks.

Why are all of Santana's highlights against the Twins?

Thanks Ed! That looks like an awesome game. Wish they had career mode or dynasty mode, though. That's how most games are these days....and I prefer it. Otherwise it looks like a lot of fun. One problem: My console is PS2 - and I've hardly played in the past 7 years because I've finally reached the age of not having much interest in video games. So I'm not about to drop money on one of these newer systems. I don't think they make any games for PS2 anymore. [:@]

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (3/17/2014 1:58:27 PM)

Twins should be on the phone with Arizona

The Diamondbacks open their season ahead of the rest of the major leagues thanks to a series in Australia against the Dodgers, but already it appears that Arizona has suffered a major loss. On Sunday, the team revealed that scheduled Opening Day starter Patrick Corbin has a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament. The 24-year-old lefty may face Tommy John surgery, and even if he doesn’t, he’ll miss significant time for an injury that will test the depth of the Diamondbacks’ rotation.

You don't have to make a killing. Heck, even a PTBNL for one of those back end guyswould suffice.

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (3/17/2014 3:44:37 PM)

Pitches are dropping like flies

2:38pm: The Athletics have announced, via Twitter, that right-hander Jarrod Parker will undergo Tommy John surgery for the second time in his career next week.

It's a big blow for the defending AL West champions, and though the team has more pitching depth than most clubs, they also shut right-hander A.J. Griffin down for three weeks over the weekend and will likely be without him for at least the first month of the season, per the San Francisco Chronicle's Susan Slusser (on Twitter). Beyond that, offseason signee Scott Kazmir was scratched from today's Spring Training start due to triceps stiffness.

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (3/17/2014 3:49:16 PM)

REALLY bad shin splints

MONDAY: Iglesias tells reporters, including MLB.com's Jason Beck, that he has been diagnosed with stress fractures in each shin, but he believes he can play at some point this season (Twitter links). Beck tweets that Iglesias will see a specialist tomorrow, which will give Detroit a better idea on his timeframe for a return.

MLB Network Radio's Jim Duquette first reported (via Twitter) that Iglesias' injury had worsened from shin spints to stress fractures earlier this morning.

SUNDAY, 1:09pm: Iglesias will need "extended rehab" for months and possibly the entire season, a source with knowledge of the injury tells the Boston Globe's Nick Cafardo (via Twitter). Meanwhile, Red Sox manager John Farrell told reporters, including Sean McAdam of CSNNE.com, he feels for Iglesias, who played for him last year, but was "aware (the shins were an issue) to the extent we had to monitor. We had to get him off his feet because he felt some pain and soreness there."

11:22am: The Tigers are sending Iglesias for a third opinion, but GM Dave Dombrowski says that the shortstop will definitely start the year on the DL, reports Tom Gage of the Detroit News (Twitter links). Initially, at least, the team will look to fill in for Iglesias internally, said Dombrowski.

SATURDAY: Tigers shortstop Jose Iglesias will miss most of the 2014 season with a shin injury, Jim Bowden of ESPN tweets, citing a player close to Iglesias. The injury has fueled speculation that the Tigers will now pursue Stephen Drew, Bowden notes.
