Span with a good start to the season.
Starting to pull more for this Nats club.
Lots of guys I like.
About time they have a special season.

Always was a good one. I think their time is now after a bad-luck season last year. They are brimming with talent.

Heard Seth Everett this morning talking about Matt Williams; he said Williams is giddy and was going into great detail on why he had guys in certain spots in the batting order, etc. I guess he's using all kinds of advanced statistics and using it to their advantage for pitching/defensive positioning, etc. Sounds Joe-Madden esque in his approach. So if you add that, plus his experience, and their talent? Look out. That club's going to do some things for awhile.

Not sure if the daniel Murphy paternity leave issue has been discussed but here's my $.02. When you make millions of dollars to play major league baseball, the rules are different. I have no problem with a player being there for the birth of his child, but after that, you got a job to do in which you are paid very handsomely.

You get five months off every year. Six if you include their one month Florida vacation every March. Thats enough. Play ball. Mommy and baby will be just fine. Mommy has her family/loved ones/nurses to help with the baby.

Ballplayers get paid too well, and like I said have six months off a year, to be missing multiple games on paternity. The Mauer situation last year was ridiculous. How many days did they give him? Would they have done that for anybody else?

They do.

Duensing missed his allotted days. MLB gives players so many days for paternity leave. EVERY player.

Screw that.

I have a child on the way that will be born very soon and NOBODY is going to tell me I only get to see that kid sporadically for the next 6 months.

I wouldn't wish that on anyone that wants to be a parent.

djskillz -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (4/4/2014 1:23:09 PM)

I'm with Trekky. I don't have any kids yet, but I have zero problem with a few days off for the first days of your kid's life. Ditto for major funerals, etc. Everyone deals with these things differently. If you want to come back to work earlier than the standard time, more power to you, but you can't make that judgment for other people.

Black 47 -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (4/4/2014 1:58:44 PM)

I think Mauer got more than was alotted. But he's special.

Not saying the Mets player shouldn't have been there for the birth on Monday, but to miss Wednesday's game too? I've always thought the rules should be slightly different for millionaire athletes who only work six months a year. With great money comes great responsibility. Athletes grumble when they have to play on Christmas or other holidays. With great money comes great responsibility.

There will be more Christmases, but this may be the only time you have with a child at this point in there developement. There are more important things in life than playing baseball. They can have a few days off to spend with their wife and newborn child before running off on some road trip.

djskillz -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (4/4/2014 2:06:09 PM)

Exactly. Being a millionaire doesn't change your kid.

SoMnFan -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (4/4/2014 2:11:24 PM)

I have a wonderful relationship with both of my boys who are in their 20s now.
I was running a route when both were born. Wasn't making a million dollars a year.
I spent every minute with my wife while she struggled to have them. Once she did and had to rest, I went back to my job.
Lost a night or two of sleep, and several more thru the years over them. Always did my share or more.
You make it work, and that includes continuing to work. It's part of deciding to have them in the first place.
These guys should be there for the births. And then get back to fulfilling their lucrative, wonderful, blessed, awesome, contracts.
IMO.

Black 47 -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (4/4/2014 2:29:27 PM)

They get paid millions and millions and millions of dollars to play a game six months a year. They have tremendous perks that go along with their job. The public is raped and pillaged to build their immaculate ballparks (which I supported) that allow them to make their millions. They charge massive prices for tickets and concessions, which allow these players to make their millions. And I have no problem with any of this. But like Southern Minnesota guy said, be there for the birth and get back to work. I know three days is their right with the CBA, but I don't have to agree with it.

djskillz -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (4/4/2014 2:51:24 PM)

6 months a year is putting it kind of light too. These guys travel non-stop, put their bodies through hell for more like 9-10 months a year (playoffs/spring training/offseason workouts, etc.). And they're generally working LONG hours on those days. And the vast majority of these guys have been doing these things for several, several years. Even playing in the minors (which IS tough) for 6-7 years on average before getting to the bigs. Not to mention the media pressure these guys go through.

I'm not saying it's some "rough" life, but it's not a cakewalk either. Again, everyone has their own set of beliefs on dealing with family matters, births, etc. Some moms take off for 4-6 months, some until they're teens, some go back to work after a few weeks. I don't have a problem with anyone's choice on that. That's a personal decision.

3 days for a guy to have paternity leave is not a big deal to me, especially to miss a couple of baseball games.

I agree with Boomer. He was over the top with his c-section comment but he offered up some sound reasoning as to why Murphy should be with the team. This is a guy who went through it himself. This is a guy who had a son who was born with cystic fibrosis. I was shocked with what he said but his rationale was sound other than that one comment. Of course, everyone jumps on that

As I recall, Mauer got about double the normal number of days for paternity leave.  Honestly, I enjoyed the time off he had from the Twins.  It was refreshing not having him in the lineup.

Ummm, you guys are being hypocrites.  What about our men in the armed forces.  Do they get paternity leave ifthey are overseas?  I think not.  Are they less human than ML ballplayers?  Do they get the same perks?  Are they paid as well.

Minnesota Nice!

Tanaka with seven good ones in his debut.
Money well spent.
And if not? They'll blow it off and move on.
It's called owning a professional sports team in 2014.
You get what you pay for.

He got the same 3 days. Then he was put on the restricted (unpaid leave) list for 3 more games.

He's damn good.
Good to see some new blood every year.

It would be interesting to find out if those days were actually unpaid leave days.  I would be willing to bet Joe received a full salary last season.  No way in hell he took nearly a $500K loss for missing three games.

I would be stunned if they were actually unpaid. But no way they'll ever reveal the truth.
