Sigh

Since going 2-for-10 in the Brewers’ opening series against the Braves, Gomez is 14-for-31 with six extra base hits and 25 total bases. In that span, he has a four-hit game, two three-hit games and two two-hit games to his credit en route to a batting line — .390/.432/.732 — that could come straight from a video game. He won’t sustain those numbers, but on the heels of a season in which he led the National League in Baseball-Reference.com’s version of Wins Above Replacement (8.9) by hitting .284/.338/.506 with 24 homers, 40 steals and a whopping 38 Defensive Runs Saved, it’s a reminder of just how dramatically he has turned his career around.

Well it is only Wins Above Replacement. Means nothing. In fact, it means he's not very good at all.

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (4/11/2014 2:12:40 PM)

Given that they gave Hardy away for nothing, what a horrid trade.

GoGo obviously would have blossomed like this with the Twins, too. [&:]

This kid is gonna be ridiculous:

The Royals are our future competition for this division, folks, starting in about 2016. They'll at least make the Tigers sweat a little this year too before the Tiggers fall off the table soon.

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (4/11/2014 2:25:27 PM)

Twins are only hoping they can be like the Royals again. Used to be BertnErnie's punchline. Not any more. Now who do they make fun of. The WSox? Houston?

And for what? The Twins are terrible. It sucks.

twinsfan -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (4/11/2014 2:42:01 PM)

I have a feeling some may find a new appreciation for the WAR statistic this year when Mauer's will be poor. They may even get behind it altogether at that point.

I like that kid.

Still my favorite bat coming up is the Cardinal's Ocscar Tavares. Ankle delayed his arrival by 1 year, but he is back knocking off the rust in Triple A right now.

Cubs are going to win a WS in 4-8 years.
They are going to have a AL type masher line-up soon.
Baez, Almora, Bryant added to Rizzo and Castro as long as thy keep his head screwed on right.

Astros have mucho quality depth of kids coming up soon. They will not be putrid for much longer.

OK, now that's crazy talk on the Cubs.

But I agree with you on the Astros. I believe they will be good more quickly than the Twins will be (way out on a limb there, I know [&:]).

No doubt, Stacey. People laugh now, but all 3 of us/Astros/Cubs should be very, very good very soon. Tons of talent coming. The Mets should be solid again really soon too if Harvey can bounce back.

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (4/11/2014 3:40:43 PM)

MLBPA executive director Tony Clark has asked commissioner Bud Selig to conduct an investigation regarding comments made by several anonymous executives to ESPN's Buster Olney for a column penned by Olney this week, the MLBPA announced in a press release. Olney's column featured a number of front office executives stating (on the condition of anonymity) what they would pay free agents Kendrys Morales and Stephen Drew on an annual basis. The comments violate baseball's collective bargaining agreement, which has language designed to prevent executives from commenting on specific players and their values/contract goals, as it could depreciate a player's market value.

Sizemore making an impact in Boston already.
Sigh.

He'll be on DL in a flash

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (4/13/2014 5:59:57 PM)

Rays lose another starter, Cobb now on DL.

twinsfan -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (4/13/2014 7:44:55 PM)

All the teams in the AL East are in trouble. Both lineups in this Red Sox-Yankees game look poor. Red Sox w/ injuries, Yankees are just mediocre these days. Rays are banged up with their pitching. Jays and O's off to bleh starts. Definitely looks like a one-team playoff division this year. Which is a trend I could get used to.

Could all wildcards come out of the West? Seattle is probably a stretch. But King Felix and Cano could carry them to a surprise playoff berth. All 4 of those West teams (not Houston, obviously) look better than any teams in the East. And they look to be on par with Detroit in the Central. KC has less HR pop than the Twins...which seems impossible. But they have 1...count it....ONE....HR hit through 11 games. If the Twins had started the season with HR output like that, there would be posters threatening to jump off a cliff.

SoMnFan -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (4/13/2014 7:49:24 PM)

Think so Matt?
I still see the best three teams being in the East.
Will be fun to see how it plays out.

SoMnFan -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (4/13/2014 8:01:47 PM)

What bites most ... is that Boston is more excited about their minor leagues than we are. They are loaded at every position.
It gives them the depth to make any deal they will see ... need ... and do.
While we sit on our hands and HOPE kids develop.

I do like the Rays. But the pitching injuries are concerning.

Right now I'd power rank the AL:

A's
Rangers
Tigers
Angels
Red Sox
Rays
Mariners

SoMnFan -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (4/13/2014 8:03:36 PM)

Right now, I'd agree
That As group really impressed me.

Hate how injuries are so much the story these days ... that sucks.

I'd have the Yankees in there, somewhere, of course.
Everyone laughs at them every year, and by the end, there they are ...

SoMnFan -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (4/13/2014 9:52:10 PM)

Kyle Lohse leads Milwaukee to another win today, and the league-best record of 10-2  [:-]
Probably should put this in the ex-Twins thread.
Lots of help from them.

SoMnFan -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (4/13/2014 9:59:14 PM)

Huge job by Phelps getting into, and out of, bases-loaded jam in the 8th.
Stays 3-2 NY

SoMnFan -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (4/13/2014 10:20:02 PM)

Beltran tearing it up for the Yanks so far.
He and McCann really improve the lineup.

SoMnFan -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (4/13/2014 10:50:18 PM)

Jeff Francouer is with the Padres AAA affiliate.
His teammates played a MONTH-LONG prank on him. Incredible.

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (4/13/2014 10:55:13 PM)

Brendan Harris released by LAD

Joe Blanton, whom TRYan had high on the list last year, has left Oakland's AAA team, apparently contemplating retiring.

MAN, can those Twins evaluate Free Agents well!

SoMnFan -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (4/13/2014 10:57:47 PM)

The Yanks were down to one catcher for tonights big game.
Gardy would have had a heart attack on the spot.
Esp after McCann got banged up late.
Beltran had to play first base, no one left there either ...
As Matt said ... teams are wiped out already

SoMnFan -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (4/13/2014 10:58:46 PM)

Yep, they were trying to tout Blanton as another of our saviors  .... unreal

it is incredible who TR has avoided by shear luck in that they didn't want to join us.

he has been saved from himself repeatedly.

How Pohlad cannot see how badly this FO evaluates borderline free agent targets as well as evaluate their own roster is hard to fathom

it says a lot that when he stepped away the best they could pull from their own crop was Bill Smith.

and now Antony is 2nd in command and the voice while he TR re coups.

Ryan is only 60-yrs old too. He will be on the job for at least 10 more years or as long as he wants to continue.
