Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (6/13/2014 11:45:04 AM)

So much for the feel-good story of Stephen Drew's return. [Drew] could be stuck at four games played this season for some time. The recently re-signed veteran aggravated his right oblique injury in Baltimore on Wednesday and after a workout [Thursday], may need to visit a hospital [Friday] for an MRI. The club is determined to get ahead of the injury, if only to get an idea of what kind of return on its $10 million investment it will get from Drew. ... The Red Sox have not switched Xander Bogaerts back to shortstop in Drew's absence, opting to keep the rookie at third base. However, Bogaerts had last night off following a tough road trip -- 7-for-38, .184 -- when [John Farrell] reported detecting signs that the club's stretch of 38 games in 39 days was catching up to the 21-year-old prospect.

Glad TR stayed away, just as we said he should. [:o]

Stacey King -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (6/14/2014 2:30:44 PM)

Dodgers spend money like crazy.

Gave Brian Wilson $10M this season.

6.14 ERA 2.05 WHIP 14 walks 27 Ks

Wilson has a player option for 8.5M for 2015.

Thinks he is opting in?

The Pittsburgh Pirates finally made the call to promote top prospect Gregory Polanco on Tuesday. A mere 72 hours later, they probably joined the rest of the world in wondering what took them so long. In only his fourth big league game, the 22-year-old from the Dominican Republic made history by recording his first career five-hit game, and to cap the whole night off he also connected for his first career home run.

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (6/16/2014 9:08:16 AM)

Glad this is one guy they didn't sign.

But between him and Pelfrey, the fact they were pursuing EITHER of them says a lot.

Time finally caught up to Bronson Arroyo. [Arroyo] has been the ultimate ironman in his career, never missing a start in his 15 years in the majors. ... After dealing with elbow issues for the past four or five starts, Arroyo may miss his next turn in the rotation, if not longer. ... The issue has been velocity for Arroyo. He's never been a flamethrower, but he could generally get his fastball up to 89 mph when he needed to. But as he's pitched through pain, his heat has diminished. His fastball averaged 83 in his last start and was sitting between 80 and 84 on Sunday -- not much faster than his change-up. "And 84 is when I'm feeling sexy," Arroyo said. "It's just ridiculous. I'm just getting outs on location and being comfortable enough in that environment to throw a bunch of slop out there and get guys out."

Hmmm...I recall a certain self-proclaimed genius around these parts insisting that he would be a nice addition to the Twins' rotation...a fantasy about Arroyo going 7-8 strong and Matt Capps coming in to slam the door...

Dave E -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (6/16/2014 10:23:42 AM)

Holy shit, terrible news: Tony Gwynn just died. No details.

Dave E -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (6/16/2014 10:24:58 AM)

Didn't realize he was undergoing treatment for cancer.

SoMnFan -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (6/16/2014 10:30:07 AM)

Had been losing the battle.
Sad. Young man yet.
A beautiful hitter at times. One of those magical swings guys.

RIP.

Sucks

twinsfan -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (6/16/2014 10:57:47 AM)

My favorite non-Twin player when I was growing up. I knew he was battling cancer, but didn't know it was going the wrong way. Should have known since he wasn't doing any announcing or coaching lately. Sad day. [:@]

Trekgeekscott -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (6/16/2014 11:08:56 AM)

OMG!!! Tony Gwynn.

What a great player and person in general.

Sad day.

SoMnFan -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (6/16/2014 1:51:13 PM)

Hit safely in 75% of the games he played in.
Made him a great player.
Visited every opposing clubhouse and had friends on every grounds crew in the league, according to close teammates.
That made him a great person.

Stacey King -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (6/16/2014 1:55:41 PM)

Juan Pierre

Tony Gwynn once waited for me 40 minutes after a game when I was a rookie to talk hitting and that talked helped me for my whole career!!!

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (6/17/2014 10:18:30 AM)

If any one of these OFs become available and can play CF, the Twins need to pursue.

Fuld had a double last night, but he's a backup, at best.

At some point relatively soon, Shane Victorino, who has been on the disabled list with a right hamstring strain since May 21, will return to the Boston lineup. But when Victorino returns, he will join a group of outfielders that includes Jackie Bradley, Jr., Jonny Gomes, Daniel Nava, Grady Sizemore, and now Brock Holt, whose defensive versatility and offensive production have made him virtually indispensable. So, some moves will have to be made. ... Sizemore could be the one that pays the price when Victorino returns. He is batting just .216/.288/.324. Nava has hit well since he was called up on June 2, batting .379, going 11-for-29 with a .486 on-base percentage. Gomes is expected to stay in a left field platoon, playing against left-handed starters.

SoMnFan -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (6/17/2014 10:21:35 AM)

This

There are lots of good OFs every year that end up unemployed
This whole "gotta try someone who's never played before" joke has to stop.
The better teams have good OFs who will never get a chance like they could have here.
Get someone drunk and get them to take one of these ludicrous pitcher contracts off our books, by taking a chance on an unknown or unused OF

twinsfan -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (6/17/2014 10:23:48 AM)

But those Red Sox outfielders aren't any good. Sizemore is completely washed up. Bradley is the Red Sox version of Hicks (not ready and may never be ready). Gomes? Gotta be near the end of the line. Nava won't be moved. They need him.

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (6/17/2014 10:25:32 AM)

And Fuld is good???

SoMnFan -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (6/17/2014 10:28:15 AM)

[&:][&:]
I wasn't thinking Red Sox really, more like the cards or dodgers or really any team who carries more than 1.5 OFers like we do ....

Stacey King -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (6/17/2014 11:06:01 AM)

Pirates in midst of a good contract with perennial MVP candidate Andrew McCutchen. Have him for 4 more years after this at a very fair rate.

signed him in spring of 2012 for 6yrs/51.5M with a club option for 2018. They won that one. He kept getting better after signing it and he is durable.

14:$7.25M
15:$10M
16:$13M
17:$14M
18:$14.5M -club option-

Why not just be happy with that instead of locking your team into a bad contract for 2019 and beyond?

Yes. Got it.

I re-read your message. I misunderstood it the first time. For some reason I thought you said they were in the midst of negotiating an extension.
