This about sums it up, from Dwayne Allen:

@NFLonFOX not a story. They could have played with soap for balls and beat us. Simply the better team. We have to continue to build! #BTM

And this is pretty interesting:

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/11/24/sports/football/eli-mannings-footballs-are-months-in-making.html?_r=0

Again, why do the teams get so much control of these? I would think a "high speed scrubbing/months-long process" would have at least as much effect on a football as deflating them a bit.

John Childress -> RE: Around the NFL (News) - 2013 Season (1/21/2015 10:37:40 AM)

Colts tight end Dwayne Allen, however, said on Twitter that the issue still didn't affect the outcome of the game.

the outcome has no bearing on the premise.

its the rule, they tampered with ball. that is against the rule. regardless if it affected the game outcome

maybe it affected the outcome against the ravens

Exactly. Whenever someone gets caught it's not the first time they've broken the rules. Ravens game was much closer...a better ball could have meant a win for the Pats. Edelman sure threw a nice ball for a TD. No Pats win against the Ravens and Indy hosts the freaking AFC title game.

It's incredibly short sided to say that the Pats won 45-7 so who cares about the balls.

djskillz -> RE: Around the NFL (News) - 2013 Season (1/22/2015 9:55:07 PM)

This kind of arrogance is why so many of us hate the Seahawks:

http://espn.go.com/nfl/playoffs/2014/story/_/id/12213078/seattle-seahawks-cb-jeremy-lane-says-new-england-patriots-te-rob-gronkowski-good

And people say the Patriots are classless?

Lynn G. -> RE: Around the NFL (News) - 2013 Season (1/23/2015 7:40:39 AM)

That looks like pretty standard NFL player stuff. It's funny how protective of the Patriots some people seem to be. If you diss a Bears player, it's all good. But dare to point out a chink in the armor of a Patriot and oh boy, the gloves come off. Dare to point out that the Patriots may have cheated and suddenly rules are not supposed to be enforced.

{shrug}

I guess as fans we all do that to a certain extent, but monolithic franchises like the Yankees and the Patriots hardly need to be protected from random comments on the internet.

EXACTLY

If the Seahawks were employing a murderer like Hernandez people would call them thugs and say Pete Carroll allows anything

Meanwhile the Pats had this psycho there for years and get no blame for not noticing they were paying millions to a gang member - a real one - not the BS the Eagles made up about Jackson either.

They call Seattle classless but the Pats have now twice been caught CHEATING and we are supposed to ignore that?

Tom Brady is the main man behind this but he is a "good guy"?

Child out of wedlock just like all other ball players but he is Tom Terrific

pure bull

El Duderino -> RE: Around the NFL (News) - 2013 Season (1/23/2015 8:30:24 AM)

I don't think anyone is saying not to enforce the rules. You can be in favor of enforcing the rules while still thinking the violation isn't that big of a deal.

To me, under inflated balls is just not that big of a violation. Cheating? I guess, but not of a variety that actually has any impact on games played.

This. I can see them being fined or something, like the $25K that the rule calls for. But nothing beyond that. The vitriol of some people against the Patriots is way worse than anyone defending them. Canty of the Ravens comparing it to PED's, Aikman saying it's worse than Bounty Gate, where a team was putting players' careers AND LIVES at risk, etc. If this wasn't the Patriots, the story would be over already. But a lot of people hate them and try to come up with excuses for their success.

As for Hernandez, the Patriots knew? Where's the proof? They cut him THAT DAY when it came out. None of these teams are full of model citizens. The majority of athletes (not just NFL), actors, musicians, etc. are not what I would call "good people". But we all separate that to some extent based on our own entertainment preferences. Heck, look at us with AD. Taking out the child abuse scandal, would you say he's a "good guy" when he's had 4-5 babies with different mothers, etc? I wouldn't. But I can separate that as a fan because I don't idolize him or look up to him in any way off the football field. I think he's a great football player and I enjoy watching his talent; that's where it ends. Ditto for ANY of these guys. All of them. Because unless we personally know them we can't speak to that.

My point is about class as it relates to carrying yourself and respecting an opponent. Rarely have we seen the Patriots (Bellichick, Brady, etc.) disrespect an opponent. We have seen it quite frequently from the Seahawks over several years now, from several of their players.

That's shockingly narrow minded and stupid.

Lynn G. -> RE: Around the NFL (News) - 2013 Season (1/23/2015 9:56:59 AM)

I agree completely that if Aikman said it's worse than bountygate he's a total moron. I'm still fuming about that, by the way. It took two egregious parties to make that happen - - - the team that created bountygate and the refs that let it happen. No one can kid themselves that they didn't notice what was going on in that game.

djskillz -> RE: Around the NFL (News) - 2013 Season (1/23/2015 9:59:00 AM)

To clarify: I don't think he said it's worse than Bounty Gate, but he said the punishment should be worse than Bounty Gate. Which really amounts to the same thing. That's just completely stupid.

Again, if it's that big of a deal, why is the penalty in the rule book only a $25K fine? Can anyone answer me that question?

Lynn G. -> RE: Around the NFL (News) - 2013 Season (1/23/2015 1:21:39 PM)

I think the answer is that it clearly is NOT considered on the level of bountygate.

Bill Jandro -> RE: Around the NFL (News) - 2013 Season (1/23/2015 4:55:55 PM)

How can you fine or disipline the Patriots when the officials approved the balls during pregame inspection?

Sounds more like a piss poor inspection more than anything.

Lynn G. -> RE: Around the NFL (News) - 2013 Season (1/23/2015 5:59:48 PM)

Bill - the footballs were inflated correctly at the beginning of the game, so the officials did nothing wrong. It was only after they were turned over to team handlers that "something" happened and they were slightly deflated.

John Childress -> RE: Around the NFL (News) - 2013 Season (1/23/2015 6:13:48 PM)

The pats are repeat offenders

Of course their punishment should be severe

Not sure that it is possible according to a report I heard on the radio. A former ball boy for the Bears said his job was to prepare the footballs according to QB's specs. He said the officials never tested air pressure with any instrument they would only pick them up and sqeeze them. The inspection is very brief and then the officials escort the balls out onto the field roughly an hour before kickoff. He said there is media everywhere and absolutely zero chance to deflate the balls w/o someone noticing.

Chances are the balls were at the low psi when inspected but still passed.

Lynn G. -> RE: Around the NFL (News) - 2013 Season (1/23/2015 8:46:02 PM)

It sounds like the report you heard on the radio doesn't gibe with what everyone else is saying. Perhaps their source was screwy.

Bill Jandro -> RE: Around the NFL (News) - 2013 Season (1/24/2015 8:08:55 AM)

Its all pretty murky as to what happened until the investigation is complete which still might not shed alot of light on it.

I thought the interview with the ball boy was very sincere and informative.

djskillz -> RE: Around the NFL (News) - 2013 Season (1/24/2015 9:27:28 AM)

Interesting Bill. That's always seemed like a plausible explanation to me too; that the inspection was off in the first place, not the Patriots' handling of them. Unless they take all the balls back to the lockerroom or something after the inspection and before warmups, where do they tamper with them where no one would notice?

Did he say if the inspection is done in the open? On the sideline or near the field?

Lynn G. -> RE: Around the NFL (News) - 2013 Season (1/24/2015 9:34:40 AM)

Then it's just a total, crazy coincidence that the only balls that were changed were the Patriot's balls, not the Colt's? That seems pretty far fetched.

Someone on one of the sports shows demonstrated how easy it is to insert one of those needle jobbies (small enough to fit in his hand and thus easily hidden) into a ball for about three seconds to release just enough air to account for the lower air pressure. It really isn't that difficult to explain how it happened. The "who" and the "when" are small details.

Lynn, not sure we're on the same page. I'm saying that it's plausible the initial inspector just "felt" the balls (it's tough not to be sophomoric when discussing this ridiculous topic [&:][&:]) instead of properly checking for PSI, and maybe passed all of them, Patriots and Colts. Then another official during the game noticed the Pats' balls may have been slightly under regulations, etc., and they did a more thorough check at halftime and re-inflated them.

Not saying that's what happened, mind you. But it wouldn't shock me. Depending on the "chain of custody" following the inspection. If the balls did not go from the initial inspection to a back room, etc., then I find it hard to believe that anything could be done to them without someone noticing. Maybe the equipment guy just sat on the bag of balls a bunch between then and warmups? [:D]

Lynn G. -> RE: Around the NFL (News) - 2013 Season (1/24/2015 10:36:48 AM)

I know what you mean about the sophomoric thing. You can tell that news and sports people are being very careful to say "footballs" instead of just "balls" when talking about this. [:D]

I understood that there was a more formal examination ahead of time, with the footballs being weighed and the psi measured - not just feeling them. And later, when they were all examined again, it was only the Patriots footballs that had changed.

I wouldn't have a problem with someone from the league as opposed to a home team employee being responsible from this point forward for all of the handling of the footballs. That would prevent anything like this from happening again.

In the meantime, rules were broken and a punishment of some kind is in order.

John Childress -> RE: Around the NFL (News) - 2013 Season (1/24/2015 10:38:52 AM)

“They were trying to suspend Marshawn for gold shoes and that [deflating the ball] really affects the game,” Sherman said, according to the Boston Globe. “You suspend Marshawn for gold shoes, then you’ve got balls being deflated and that’s the issue.”

Sherman has a history of calling out what he sees as NFL hypocrisy. Late last year, Sherman held a press conference alongside a cardboard cutout of teammate Doug Baldwin -- Baldwin hid behind the podium for some reason -- in which the duo criticized the league’s requirement that players talk to the media but make sure to wear the appropriate headphones when they do. (The league bans players from wearing Beats by Dre headphones on camera immediately before and after a game.)

The duo also pointed out at the time that the league says it worries about player safety, but sometimes makes teams play two games in five days.
