From the Pioneer Press:

LANDOVER, Md. (AP) — Johnny Manziel raised his middle finger toward the Washington Redskins bench as he returned to the huddle late in the third quarter. It was one of the few times a Cleveland Browns quarterback actually found his intended target.

Saw it last night and immediately figured SMF had died and gone to heaven. [&:]

Pretty close.
It threw most of middle America into panic, which is awesome. [&:]

Pretty sure the only panic was in Cleveland....

Ok .... obsession then [&:]

Maybe Manziel was simply playing tribute to the long ago Monday Night Football broadcast when the Houston fan, showed the country that Houston was number 1.

Mick Tinglehoff nominated for HOF by the vet committee. I hope he gets in.

The Mick

Dude was a little warrior.
Undersized, even in that era.
Counted on him for decades.
Man, players just never missed seasons or games or even plays back in the day. A different time.

MINNEAPOLIS -- As elementary as the Minnesota Vikings' game plans have been for their first two preseason contests, the Vikings' wins over the Oakland Raiders and Arizona Cardinals have already seen coach Mike Zimmer and defensive coordinator George Edwards unveil a handful of different defensive looks.

"Once I feel like we have the fundamentals down and the techniques down, then you can worry about tricking somebody else or disguising," Mike Zimmer said.Anthony Barr has played linebacker, rushed the quarterback standing up and moved into a defensive end position on passing downs. Everson Griffen has played left end and right end. Brian Robison has rushed from the left end spot and moved inside. The Vikings have dropped several different linemen into coverage, they've shown a three-safety package in their nickel defense, and they've been unafraid to blitz safeties such as Harrison Smith.

There's probably more coming from a coach who sent a defensive back on a blitz 75 times while he was the Cincinnati Bengals' defensive coordinator last year, according to ESPN Stats & Information. That figure was the 10th-highest in the league, and it was nearly double the number of times (41) the Vikings blitzed a cornerback or safety. But as effective -- and as entertaining -- as different looks can be, Zimmer says he won't overdo it to the point he runs the risk of diluting a player's focus.

"It's a little bit of, 'What can the guy do and still be effective?'" Zimmer said. "Once I feel like we have the fundamentals down and the techniques down, then you can worry about tricking somebody else or disguising. You don't always have guys like Griffen, Barr, Robison that can do a number of different things. Those three guys can stand up and drop, play outside linebacker and rush."

Zimmer said the Vikings are getting to the point where their understanding of defensive fundamentals is strong enough that he can mix in different ideas, but he still knows there's a danger in mixing in too many different ideas. To borrow a musical metaphor, it's no good for a drummer to show off all sorts of complicated fills and complex beats if he can't keep the rest of the band in the groove.

"You don't want to hurt other guys by trying to fit some other guy in something he's not comfortable with," Zimmer said. "There's a cause and effect with everybody."

The Vikings will have plenty of chances to get creative with their personnel this season, simply because of how many versatile players they have in their front seven, but Zimmer's defense is built on sound fundamentals and good communication across the defense more than it's energized by anything exotic. If the Vikings can't handle the basics this season, we probably won't see as much variety in Zimmer's defensive looks

Watched this kid grow up around here.
I'm hoping he does well there in Buffalo.
He's got a certain Paul Bunyan-type following around here.
Sounds like its carried over, even up there in Buffalo.
I saw him do things no other HS kid has ever done, that's for sure.

He has yet to coach a game, but impressions of new Buffalo football coach Todd Bouman — yes, that Todd Bouman, who lists the Vikings as the first of six NFL franchises for whom he played quarterback — are already plentiful.

“The first time I shook his hand, it felt like it went all the way around mine,” senior quarterback Taylor Spier said. “Twice.”

“The first thing I noticed was that he has great facial hair,” senior safety Pierce Moline said. “With that and his big smile, he can be pretty disarming.”

Senior kicker Luke Folkerds summed up what pretty much everyone thought.

“It was a little intimidating talking to him at first, because of who he is,” he said. “I mean, he played for the Vikings. That’s insane.”

Despite an NFL career that spanned 14 seasons, including six with the Vikings from 1997 through 2002, Bouman has always envisioned himself in the position he’s in now. The idea of retiring to South Beach or landing a big-time broadcasting gig never really interested him. Coaching high school football, he said, is exactly where he wants to be.

“It’s funny,” said the 42-year-old graduate of Russell-Tyler-Ruthton high school in southwestern Minnesota. “My old track coach, Tom Thomas, told me that, when he asked me what I wanted to do when I got older, I said I wanted to be a high school football coach. I don’t remember saying that, but it’s something I’ve always wanted to do.”

Bouman, who played in college at St. Cloud State, got a taste of coaching high school football in 2007 as an assistant at Buffalo before he got another chance at a pro career when the St. Louis Rams called. He ended his NFL career after a stint with Jacksonville in 2010 and headed back to southwest Minnesota, where he took the offensive coordinator position at Pipestone High School under head coach and twin brother Troy.

When Gerard Rohl, Buffalo’s head coach since 1992, resigned last spring, Bouman became the school’s target as a replacement.

“I’d heard rumors that they were trying to hire him,” said senior captain Zach Dahl, a wide receiver/safety. “When it was finally announced, there was a lot of excitement. It was really cool.”

While Bouman has been around football his entire life, he admits that he’s still learning the ins and outs of heading up a program.

“There’s a learning curve that I don’t think is ever going to go away,” he said. “Right now, everything is a little bit new. My brother said to me ‘You don’t know how many more aspects go into being a head coach than being a coordinator.’ The phone calls, the e-mails, stuff like that. I’m still getting used to it, but I’m loving every minute of it.”

The adjustment process extends to the Buffalo players as well.

“In our first team meeting, he spit out one of the plays from [his days in] New Orleans,” Dahl recalled. “It was something like 20 words long. We were looking at each other like, ‘OK. What do we do now?’ ”

The football team at Buffalo has struggled recently, winning just 12 games over the past four years. Playing in the Mississippi 8 Conference, the football buzz at the school has grown faint. The conference is home to powerhouses Rogers, St. Michael-Albertville and Cambridge-Isanti as well as emerging programs in Monticello, St. Francis and Chisago Lakes.

Bouman’s arrival has restored some of the hope for successful Friday nights this fall.

“There is absolutely a different atmosphere here now,” Moline said. “Everything is new and fresh. Everyone here is more hopeful.”

After years in the NFL, Bouman is gregarious and outgoing, yet also savvy enough to know the importance of not burning any bridges.

“Gerard [Rohl] has been great, coming down to talk about the program and how things have been done in the past,” Bouman said. “But any time there’s a new coach, even if it’s the Cincinnati Bengals, there’s added excitement because it’s different. It’s what we do with it going forward that makes the difference.”

He knows there are no quick fixes. His primary goal, Bouman said, is helping the players get the most out of the experience and establishing a winning attitude.

“I have such fond memories of high school. I’ve always wanted to give something back,” he said. “It’s such an influential time in a kid’s life. I was very blessed to do what I did for many years, but nobody will ever tell me that there’s anything better than playing with your buddies under the lights on Friday night.”

If Bradford tore his ACL, MN should trade Ponder to STL. [:D]

Thanks for posting that about Bouman

One of those MN kids who excelled at a school other than the U of M.

a 14 year pro career is pretty impressive.

He will do well as a coach.

Can't until after the 1st game. Plus they need a scout team QB

Yep, it was preseason, but that game Saturday night was damn fun.
We have some ass-kickers. I likey.
I'm at least feeling somewhat excited about our direction again.
Our QB sitch looks healthy. Our depth is improving. Our approach is light-years ahead, already.
Feelin good. Expecting a gut punch soon.

Yeah a good dose of reality probably comes in week 1, when the lambs with no real qb, hands it to them.

At least the coach won't look like a deer in the headlights, win or lose.

djskillz -> RE: Vikes talk for Twins fans (8/26/2014 10:47:20 AM)

No doubt we have started to really assemble talent. AD, Patterson, Rudolph, Griffin, Joseph, Barr, Smith can all be real studs. I love our kickers. And I like Zimmer and Norv a ton. It seems like we went from "holes everywhere" to "we're a couple of pieces away" in a short time. Kudos to Spielman's work on that.

As it's been for several years, and even moreso in today's league; it's all about QB play. If Cassell (and soon Teddy) can play well, this team can do some damage.

SoMnFan -> RE: Vikes talk for Twins fans (8/26/2014 10:47:35 AM)

Damn-near cried seeing my boy Thielens success on the punt return.
Such a great kid.
Loved how the vets were all over him, pumping him up.
He's one of those feel-good stories every sport desperately needs. The kid can play.

SoMnFan -> RE: Vikes talk for Twins fans (8/26/2014 10:49:37 AM)

I'm not as down on Cassel as most are.
I think he can manage just fine, if the play-calling continues on the right arc.
He can make most of the needed throws. He's been around. He's hungry for success. All good things.

djskillz -> RE: Vikes talk for Twins fans (8/26/2014 10:50:37 AM)

Just having Norv, one of the best OC's of all time, vs. Musgrave will be a MASSIVE difference. For everyone. AD and Jennings' comments this offseason were incredibly telling on that front.

Getting Norv as our OC coordinator (who I've wanted for years) was akin to if the Twins hire Paul Molitor for me. I could hardly believe it.

The 53 yard TD to Patterson, and the TD throw to Rudolph the week before...

Those are plays rarely seen in MN offense in recent years.

Dave E -> RE: Vikes talk for Twins fans (8/26/2014 2:15:46 PM)

My two cents:

The offense ended up putting up a decent amount of points last year despite the QB carousel and the insistance on continually playing Ponder and a mediocre-at-best OC. Presumably the steady-if-not-spectacular Cassel will be provide better stability at QB; the same for Norv at OC. So the offense has to be at least a little better, right?

The defense was atrocious last year. This year our secondary, while not complete, should be better with a year of experience under X's belt and the Captain at CB as well. LB is basically the same; maybe improved with Barr. D-line looks good so far. Coaching HAS to be better by default; even before we consider that Zimmer has had a lot of success as a defensive coach.

So I don't get all the predictions that we're in line for a four win season. Hell, we could have won 7-8 last year with marginally improved play -- why can't we do that this year? Not expecting a playoff run -- or even the playoffs, really -- but this strikes me as a .500-ish team on its way up.

MDK -> RE: Vikes talk for Twins fans (8/26/2014 2:20:29 PM)

Sure hope that Zimmer is willing to platoon unlike Gardy. I don't know if I want to see AD go both ways.....might get exhausting.

What is all the fuss with Zimmer and Pro Football Focus grades.....Souhan on ESPN 1500 alluded that it had to do with a local sports media person using this information in their articles as if it were the gospel in analysis/grades.

I agree with most of this.

The rub will be the schedule to start.
we could easily go 1-4...but I actually expect better. With Bradford out in St Louis I expect a good chance at a win. and this offense may be dynamic the more they play. If they can get through the first five game gauntlet 2-3 or even 3-2...then 8-8 or better is very much attainable.

Out offense has been cruising this preseason. Moving the ball well. and it's all been vanilla plus no AD. Call it the ZimmerNorv effect, but I expect this offense to surprise a lot of people this year.

djskillz -> RE: Vikes talk for Twins fans (8/26/2014 3:05:25 PM)

Agreed. Our OL isn't great, but it's been together awhile. Usually that's a good thing. Peterson is still the best in the game, Patterson is going to be a hell of a WR, Jennings is still a decent 2, and we've got some other good receiving options. And Rudolph is more than a solid TE. Couple that with one of the best OC's the game has ever seen and we should have a solid offense almost no matter what happens at QB. And I expect at least" decent" out of those guys.

For the defense, I don't really see how we're not a lot better. Coaching is huge. Yes, we lost Jared Allen, but he wasn't the same guy the last couple years anyway. Honestly I think the gain of Linval Joseph (who is a stud) is bigger than the loss of Jared alone. Then you add in guys that should be better with experience and/or better scheme (Robison/Floyd/Griffin/Smith/Rhodes) and add in what should be immediate improvements in Captain and Barr, and I can't see how how both our defense and offense shouldn't be significantly better. I expect the front 7 to be very, very good this year with the back 4 still a couple of pieces short.

I'd put our win range at 6 to 11 this year. And yes, I think it will hinge heavily on those first 4 games or so.

Zone blocking sucks. Childress wasted the prime years of Birk and Hutchinson's careers with that garbage.
