Mr. Ed -> RE: Vikes talk for Twins fans (8/7/2014 10:44:33 AM)

The University of Minnesota is seeking to bar use of the "Redskins" name from TCF Bank Stadium when the Minnesota Vikings host Washington at the venue on Nov. 2, according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

In a letter to U.S. Representative Betty McCollum of Minnesota on Aug. 1, Minnesota president Eric Kaler said the university is working with the Vikings and making "every effort" to not have "Redskins" used on game day in promotional and game day materials, calling the nickname "offensive."

SoMnFan -> RE: Vikes talk for Twins fans (8/7/2014 3:03:04 PM)

Stay out of it, U of M. Please.

Lynn G. -> RE: Vikes talk for Twins fans (8/7/2014 4:59:06 PM)

I don't have any specific opinion about the U of M and their involvement in this issue - but our nation's institutions of learning have a long and wonderful history of taking stands against human rights issues. When I was in college, my school was involved in the anti-apartheid movement and the school's financial portfolio did the whole divestment of South African stocks thing. I was proud then and to this day I'm proud when universities take a leadership role in those kinds of things. It feels appropriate to me.

But "Redskins" is a term of great honor - don't you get it? [&o]

Lynn G. -> RE: Vikes talk for Twins fans (8/8/2014 8:57:17 AM)

Yes, so they say. [:D]

Don't you find it interesting that when people are defending the use of the term, they themselves still can't quite bring themselves to say it. They'll say "Native Americans are proud of the word." Or "American Indians say the word is one of honor and respect."

They use the words "Native Americans" or "American Indians" when describing the community - but never "Redskins." Interesting. If it really is a term of respect why don't you ever hear them say "The redskins I have talked to are perfectly fine with it."

Try walking into the heart of a Native American community and start throwing the word "redskins" around in casual conversation. But wear padding and head protector when you do it.

Dave E -> RE: Vikes talk for Twins fans (8/8/2014 9:20:32 AM)

I have no problem with the U taking this stand -- in fact, it's a no brainer. It's not a debate, whatever Dan Snyder says, as to whether the word is offensive. As Lynn suggests, go to a reservation and start throwing around the word and see where it gets you. Funny that Dan Snyder says it's a term of honor, yet won't do that.

It's the right thing for the U to do, and additionally, the Mdewakanton Sioux gave the U $10 million for TCF Bank stadium. Like any organization, they're watching out for their friends.

I'm proud of the U's stand on this. Not sure if it will work, but I certainly appreciate the effort.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Vikes talk for Twins fans (8/8/2014 9:22:05 AM)

I think anyone with Scandanavian/Viking heritage should be suing Zygi to change the name. The team sucks so bad, it's embarrassing to those with Viking ancestry.

Adding A player w/a future that makes a difference helps, eh?

Jim Frenette -> RE: Vikes talk for Twins fans (8/8/2014 10:46:09 AM)

I like that Zimmer wants to look at Teddy with the #1's in the 1st game. He has 3 other games that he could have done this. They must see something in him because I thought they were willing to let him backup for a year.

Dave E -> RE: Vikes talk for Twins fans (8/8/2014 10:56:45 AM)

Whatever becomes of Bridgewater, it is at least comforting to know that he's coming in and looking good and is pushing Cassell...not that Cassell is a world-beater, but that's far more encouraging than anything we've ever seen out of Ponder.

Exactly.
Gardenhire is a weird combo of Tice and Childress.

Very dumb at the core, but thinks he's smarter than anyone.

The worst attributes of the aforementioned.

Best view on it I've ever heard.
Nice work.

I've already heard more about Teddy being around the training facility a lot studying since he signed, then I ever did about Ponder. He might have, but I'm sure someone would have reported it.m

Ponder was drafted the strike year, so not all of it was his fault that first year, but I agree -- Bridgewater seems like a put-your-head-down-and-work kind of guy. Not that Ponder didn't work, he just...seemed to kind of drift around.

SoMnFan -> RE: Vikes talk for Twins fans (8/9/2014 8:14:49 AM)

Pretty decent first time out.
Love having an animated, intense coach, who appears to actually be among the living during the game.
Not going to miss Fraziers "dead man walking" appearance, even one tiny little bit.
We have lots of issues yet, but its great to see a different attitude so far.
Cassel looked sharp. Patterson has star potential. Our defense looked more aggressive.
Was most excited to see Thielen get some love. Guys like that are tiny parts of teams, but I hope theres always room for them.
He's a great story. Has to be loving life right now. Play til they make you quit, kid.

I forgot about that Dave, thanks for reminding me

Baby steps.

If anyone missed the Cap'n interview by Leber I'll sum it up for ya.

"communication" ~~ as in ~~~ he said that word about 25 times in a one paragraph answer.

what can you bring from Carolina and help the guys with as far as advice?

Oh man, communication. It's all about communications in the secondary. I tell the guys that if we communicate, our communications will be fine. That's what I try to communicate to them and what the coaches are trying to communicate to us. It's all about communicating communications man.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Vikes talk for Twins fans (8/9/2014 12:55:08 PM)

Vikings defensive tackle Linval Joseph was treated and released from a hospital after he was hit in the calf by a stray bullet following the team's preseason game against the Raiders on Friday night, the team announced in a statement Saturday afternoon.

The incident occurred inside 400 SoundBar in downtown Minneapolis. The team described the 25-year-old Joseph as "innocent bystander."

Joseph suffered a minor injury, but the team said he is expected to return this week.

I noticed the difference in play calling. Not sure what it will look like once regular season starts and AP is in the game. As long as they can move the ball passing, I would do that to loosen up the defense at the beginning of the game. AP could then take over

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Vikes talk for Twins fans (8/9/2014 7:38:17 PM)

Posted this in the Vikes forum but will post it here too because~~?????. I'm missing something.

WTH?

So, during the Lions/Clev game. Clev kicks off and the KO return man fumbles. Refs say it's not a fumble because the ground caused it. Clev challenges and the refs say "you're right, it was a fumble but we couldn't tell who recovered so it's Lions ball. Oh, BTW- you lose a TO".

SoMnFan -> RE: Vikes talk for Twins fans (8/10/2014 7:35:35 AM)

Just like I figured.
Johnny Football moves chains.
Johnny Football has a really good football IQ, where he throws the ball away, instead of "into trouble".
Guy is just
damn
fun
to watch, imo.
Doesn't matter what level, he will succeed.

IMO.
