Was it a cricket or a grasshopper???????

Todd G -> RE: Baseball Trivia (4/26/2011 12:11:37 PM)

We were going for the longest consecutive string of different poster smartass comments.  The board record is only 6, so we had a good shot at it.

Better luck next time.

That is so lame, that is really lame.

Dave E -> RE: Baseball Trivia (4/26/2011 2:58:44 PM)

Tried to get the streak started again, Todd, but Matt has to go and put a fly in the ointment.

twinsfan -> RE: Baseball Trivia (4/26/2011 3:00:49 PM)

Lameness in dogs can be caused by insect bites. The streak continues.

Dave E -> RE: Baseball Trivia (4/26/2011 3:03:56 PM)

My, we're chippy today, aren't we Matt -- ants in your pants?

TJSweens -> RE: Baseball Trivia (4/26/2011 3:51:52 PM)

No he's just a pissant.

I used to post 12 straight some nights ... when the gameday thread was lonesomeville. So I'm doubting that "6" number. [:D]

SMF used to carry on conversations with himself and never realized he was the only one posting........[;)]

Then again, SMF never won a contest.[:D]

Sorry my man, I just can't believe that you still believe runs and wins in baseball are important.  So I had to pile on.[&:]

6 is the official number that I pulled out of thin air, disprove it. Take me to court. I dare ya. My lawyers got a fancy new law degree (just give it a few weeks).

What happened this day in Twins history in 1994?

djskillz -> RE: Baseball Trivia (4/27/2011 12:03:21 PM)

My second "favorite" Twins pitcher of all-time threw a no-hitter.

TJSweens -> RE: Baseball Trivia (4/27/2011 12:04:58 PM)

Was that the year Erickson threw a no hitter? I think that was Erickson and the teams one highlight for the year.

He is just your second favorite because he married Lisa Guerrero.

Rule Review Quiz.

Below are five hypothetical situations.
Answer whether the statements are true or false.

1. Minnesota Twins left-hander Francisco Liriano delivers a 1-2 pitch to the Baltimore Orioles’ Matt Wieters. The pitch hits the ground in front of home plate, and Wieters foul-tips the ball into the mitt of catcher Joe Mauer. Wieters should not be called out on strikes.

2. The Kansas City Royals’ Alex Gordon hits a foul ball that rolls toward the dugout. Detroit Tigers first basemanMiguel Cabrera throws his glove at the ball. The glove makes contact with the ball about 3 feet from the dugout. The umpires should award Gordon three bases.

3. The Chicago Cubs’ Aramis Ramirez hits a fly ball that strikes a bird. The ball comes down and is caught by Cincinnati Reds outfielder Jay Bruce. This should be ruled a legal catch.

4. The Boston Red Sox have Jacoby Ellsbury on first base when New York Yankees right-hander A.J. Burnett balks by not coming to a complete stop in his set position. As Burnett delivers the pitch, the plate umpire calls a balk, but Adrian Gonzalez swings and hits a home run. Because of the balk call, the umpire should rule the play dead, with Ellsbury going to second base and Gonzalez remaining at bat with the same count.

5. The San Diego Padres’ Chase Headley is hit on the hand on a pitch delivered by the St. Louis Cardinals’ Chris Carpenter. Headley should not be awardedfirst base because thehand is considered part of the bat.

I'll give it a shot:

False
False
True
True
False

Dave E -> RE: Baseball Trivia (4/29/2011 4:42:56 PM)

Not sure about the first. Otherwise, I'll go with Dustin's picks.

Guest -> RE: Baseball Trivia (4/29/2011 5:01:47 PM)

I thought when the ball hits the ground, it is dead........I am going with Dustin's choices but disagree on number 1.

When I read 3, I thought the fielder caught the bird, not the ball.

What game did Randy Johnson throw a pitch, hit a bird and killed the bird...it was in Toronto, correct?

Stacey King -> RE: Baseball Trivia (4/29/2011 5:02:45 PM)

False. A pitch that bounces in the dirt is treated like any other

2. The Kansas City Royals’ Alex Gordon hits a foul ball that rolls toward the dugout. Detroit Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera throws his glove at the ball. The glove makes contact with the ball about 3 feet from the dugout. The umpires should award Gordon three bases.

False. A batter is only awarded three bases when a fielder deliberately throws his glove and makes contact with a fair ball or a ball that has a chance of becoming fair.

3. The Chicago Cubs’ Aramis Ramirez hits a fly ball that strikes a bird. The ball comes down and is caught by Cincinnati Reds outfielder Jay Bruce. This should be ruled a legal catch.

True.

False. If the batter and all runners advance one base when a pitch follows a balk call, the balk is ignored.

5. The San Diego Padres’ Chase Headley is hit on the hand on a pitch delivered by the St. Louis Cardinals’ Chris Carpenter. Headley should not be awarded first base because the hand is considered part of the bat.

False. The hand is not part of the bat.

Can't remember. Winfield definitely offed a bird there with a warm up throw, but can't recall if Johnson did as well.
