Well I think it worked out for him being promoted to Gardners staff as well....he was a very young man at the time but they brought him up to work with those players....something I expect we will see with Doug M next year once all those dudes are moved up

He was a great 3B coach those years. I remember Carney Lansford was ready to strangle him when TK got him to cut off the throw to the plate while he waved his runner home. Another time Micky Hatcher was on 2B and TK called him over to 3B for a quick instruction. When Hatcher got there he asked TK what wanted. TK told him to stand on 3B because the ump never called time. TK was the only one on the field who had noticed it.

E-Twins

Return of guys who didn't advance, or tried and were sent back......Minier is STILL in GCL

ELIZABETHTON — It didn’t take long for the word “rivalry” to crop up when the Elizabethton Twins arrived at Joe O’Brien Field on Monday.

“When do we play those guys 15 minutes away?” Twins pitcher Dereck Rodriguez wondered aloud as the team prepared for its first workout at its home field.

Rodriguez was talking about the Johnson City Cardinals, who won the Appalachian League championship last season after a spirited first-round series win over the Twins.

“I want to play those guys already,” Rodriguez said. “It’s fun. I had rivals when I was in high school and when my dad played for the Yankees for a half season, it was awesome seeing them play the Red Sox.”

Rodriguez said his feelings about the Cardinals intensified when he heard that they had won the title.

“Yeah, especially the way they beat us here and the way they won,” he said. “We want it back.”

The Twins open the season tonight at Bluefield when they open a three-game series. Their home opener is set for Friday night when Pulaski pays a visit.

For the record, Elizabethton doesn’t play Johnson City until July 11 when the teams start a three-game series in Elizabethton.

Rodriguez was Elizabethton’s best reliever last year and is being converted to a starter. In fact, he’s starting tonight’s season opener. He was 2-2 with a 1.05 ERA last season for Elizabethton. He made two starts at Class A Cedar Rapids this season and allowed nine hits and seven runs in seven innings.

“I’m a little surprised (to be back),” Rodriguez said. “But I think it’s more because they’re trying to make me a starter, getting my feet wet a little and getting more experience in a starting role. Hopefully if I do well enough, I’ll get out of here.”

Rodriguez, son of former All-Star catcher Pudge Rodriguez, began his professional career as an outfielder before switching to the mound last year.

“He hasn’t been pitching very long,” longtime Twins manager Ray Smith said. “Last year was his first year pitching and we used him out of the pen. This year they want to take advantage of his arm and they figured he might profile better as a starter. He was a setup guy and he closed late. He did a fine job for us.”

Rodriguez is one of five returning players from last year’s Elizabethton team.

First baseman Tyler Kuresa, one of the league’s top run producers last season, is back after struggling to start this year at Cedar Rapids. Kuresa hit .298 with five home runs and 44 RBIs last year. He was second in the Appy League in RBIs, trailing only Johnson City’s Casey Grayson.

Kuresa was hitting .194 with one home run in 36 games in Cedar Rapids before being sent down to Elizabethton to start the Appy League season.

Pitchers C.K. Irby (1-1, 1.35) and Kuo Hua Lo (3-0, 3.69) are also back as is outfielder Austin Diemer, who hit .227 in 55 games last year.

“That’s typical, and probably, if they get off to a start, they’ll be the first guys to get out of here,” said Smith, whose team lost eight players to call-ups before the playoffs began last year. “That’s typical for us. You want to win, but it’s all about developing players.”

The will be Smith’s 22nd year as the Elizabethton manager, and he still gets excited when the season gets ready to start.

“I still get that Opening Day nervous anticipation,” he said. “I wish I could still be out there playing, but then my body tells me something different. Now I’m kind of relegated to banging some ground balls and throwing a little BP. There’s always a little boy in us no matter how old we are.”

Smith said he doesn’t know much about his team after spending a couple of days with them in Florida before heading north.

“I’ve seen them about a day and a half; That’s about it,” he said. “We’ve had some meetings with the scouts and gone over the scouting reports. I’ve met the guys but I don’t have the names and faces yet.”

Oliveros a clear case of succumbing to the frustrations of "what else do I have to do to get called up" syndrome. He's probably losing hope, and it's affecting his performance right now. Pinto was suffering from the same thing before his concussion.

Twins slugger Lewin Diaz "has Miguel Sano power"

[image]http://i62.tinypic.com/33ufl3l.jpg[/image]

"He honestly has Miguel Sano power," said Gulf Coast Twins outfielder Roberto Gonzalez, referring to the Twins third base prospect who hit 35 home runs in 2013 but then missed 2014 because of an elbow injury. Sano, also from the Dominican Republic, is playing third base in Double-A this season.

Lewin Diaz can put on a show in the batting cage.

That pure power from the 18-year-old first baseman's 6-foot-3, 263-pound frame wasn't the only thing that convinced the Minnesota Twins to give the left-handed hitter a $1.4 million signing bonus out of Santiago de los Caballeros in the Dominican Republic, where he has an older and younger sister.

The middle child, who turns 19 on Nov. 19, always stood out in terms of his stature and power throughout the scouting process, said Minnesota Twins vice president of player personnel Mike Radcliffe.

"Most guys see him as a power guy," Radcliffe said. "But we think he can hit. At the end of the day, we offered the most money. We think he can hit (for average) along with having that power.

What gets you signed down there is your present ability. Lewin, he's bigger and stronger than anybody else his age. Everybody knew about Lewin."As the Gulf Coast League Twins begin the 2015 season at CenturyLink Sports Complex, Diaz will be looking to improve his conditioning, his defense and his English, of which he only knows a few dozen words. The native Spanish speaker is taking classes three nights a week and living in the Twins' player development academy adjacent to his new home field.

Diaz hit .257 (37-for-144) with five of his team's seven home runs and 27 RBI in 43 games last season for Minnesota's Dominican League team.

Diaz said about 35 percent of his signing bonus is going to coach/agent William Valdez. Diaz's father, a landlord who owns eight-to-10 houses, will help him manage the rest.

"My name is Lewin Diaz, and I like to hit home runs," Diaz said for a video shoot.

His new teammates recognized this.

Gulf Coast Twins outfielder Tyree Davis said he would enjoy watching a home run derby with Diaz, Sano and two other powerful swingers in the Twins organization, Kennys Vargas and Adam Brett Walker.

Vargas, in the big leagues now, hit 26 homers last season. Walker hit 25 homers for the Fort Myers Miracle last season and is in Double-A with Sano this season.

"Now that's a competition," Davis said. "When I first saw Diaz in B.P. (batting practice), I was like, 'Who is this guy?'"

Gulf Coast League manager Ramon Borrego said he has high hopes for Diaz.

"He can be really good, I can tell you that," Borrego said. "He has really good potential to be a power hitter. And he's a big guy, but he moves well."

Diaz reminded Borrego of a young David Ortiz.

"With the approach he has at the plate, and the hand-eye coordination he has, he can hit the ball everywhere," Borrego said.

"When he does hit the ball," Gonzalez said of Diaz, "it ain't coming back to the field."

Once the games are played, they often lose.

The Twins will have two representatives in the All-Star Futures Game, the minor league component of MLB All-Star week that features some of the game's top prospects.

Pitcher J.O. Berrios and outfielder Max Kepler will be on the World Team, MLB announced Wednesday. Berrios is from Puerto Rico and Kepler is from Germany.

Each of the players is having a standout individual season, and might be in the Major Leagues before the season concludes.

Berrios, 21, is 7-3 with a 3.23 ERA in 14 starts for Double-A Chattanooga. He had 86 strikeouts and 23 walks in 83 2/3 innings for the Lookouts. Berrios pitched in last year's game as a 20-year-old. He was joined that year by fellow members of the Twins organization, Kennys Vargas and Alex Meyer.

Kepler, meanwhile, is having a great season at the plate. The 22-year-old is hitting .332/.402/.535 with 30 extra base hits, 27 RBIs and 12 stolen bases. Kepler was included in the game as an infielder, as he's played some first base this season when a teammate went down with an injury. But Kepler is primarily thought of as an outfielder in the Twins organization.

"Kepler's more of an athlete that can swing the bat and he can run and do a lot of things," Twins GM Terry Ryan said recently. "He's having a good year."

The Twins didn't have any players selected for the U.S. Team. The World Team has players from seven different countries. The Dominican Republic is the most represented, with 13 players, followed by Venezuela (5) and Puerto Rico (3). Curacao, Germany, Nicaragua and Taiwan are each represented by one player on the World Team.

The Futures Game will take place in Cincinnati on Sunday, July 12.

Ken Griffey Sr. will manage the U.S. team and Tony Perez will manage the World Team.

Nobody, and I mean nobody deserves to play in the Gulf Coast League if they cannot hit.
It is beyond me how some players get a free pass on hittiing just because they are a "Prospect"

Some don't like to hear the truth I guess.

Like all "realists" I'm in simpler terms an "Asshole"
