Really good, and fair, writeup on Gordon over at minor league ball (one of the best sites out there). Very encouraging:

Looks like s true SS prospect. Not another prospect who projects as a 2b.

I've only gotten to see him play twice live, Steve, but from what I've seen, absolutely he can/will stick at SS longterm. I haven't felt that way about any of our other guys (Goodrum/Michael/Polanco).

I will be at tomorrow's game versus the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers.

Because it is on work time it doesn't look like I'll be able to have any alcoho. - so I'll probably be able to give one.

Can't wait to see Gordon one day.
Accelerate this pace please.

Josmil Pinto, put on the DL with concussion symptoms 18 days ago, is throwing and able to do conditioning stuff. Good to hear. #mntwins

CPAMAN -> RE: Players and prospects III (6/29/2015 2:59:54 PM)

I rarely do this but I was interested in looking at Oswaldo Arcia's minor league progress/stats this season. Two words = not good!

Games = 26
PA = 102
AB = 94
BA (not important) = .202
R = 6
H = 19 (also not important)
2B = 5 (extremely important)
3B = 0
HR = 1 (nice, but not necessary)
RBI = 10 (meaningless, depends upon the players in front of you)
BB = 5 (need more of these)
OBP = .235 (very bad!)
Slug = .287 (ugly!)
OPS = .523 (embarrassing [:o] )

Hmmm, something is really haywire with Mr. Oswaldo. His numbers are career lows across the board. This is serious shit for a player with his ML tenure and potential for a big payday. He is literally throwing away millions upon millions of dollars. His trade value has to be close to zero right now. The Twins cannot give up on him yet but he is literally hanging on by a thread.

TJSweens -> RE: Players and prospects III (6/29/2015 3:46:59 PM)

Mike Berrardino allude to Arcia coming up to the bigs for the first time with a fairly compact and level swing. He made more consistent contact and still hit for power with that swing. He reveled in the oohs and aahs when he jacked one out of a major league ballpark and started swinging for the fences on every pitch. That's where he developed that very pronounced hitch in his swing. The result is that can still blast one when he gets ahold of a pitch, but he misses a lot more pitches by a country mile. Bruno and Molitor put a lot of work into ironing it out of his swing, but the young man is a bit stubborn and defiant about it.

Right now, hitting .180 at AAA, risking demotion even lower, Arcia will hopefully grow up some and ask for help.

TJSweens -> RE: Players and prospects III (6/29/2015 3:51:50 PM)

Yep, it really seems to be kind of a macho thing with Arcia. He is young stubborn and stupid right now. After all, what would Bruno know about hitting the long ball at the major league level? [&o]

Mr. Ed -> RE: Players and prospects III (6/29/2015 3:53:11 PM)

It sounds a lot like Vargas; I saw some notes where he was sent out, in part, because he was trying to BP swing everything. Apparently he got the message.

Frankly, I am surprised that he hasn't already been demoted to AA or even A Fort Myers. He was actually doing considerably better at the plate with the Twins before being demoted. Really, he could not be any worse than he is right now. He is worse than most pitchers would be if you gave them a similar number of AB. Very sad and frustrating. Worse that a person could be that stupid not to listen to sound advice and get your act together.

djskillz -> RE: Players and prospects III (6/29/2015 9:46:31 PM)

He's got to get moving, but Pudge's kid (Dereck Rodriguez) with another good start today at Elizabethton. 1 hit and 1 walk in 7 shutout innings. 7 k's.

He's 23 (converted to SP) so he's gotta get going, but still encouraging signs.

Niko Goodrum finally hit his first AA homer tonight.

Playing CF again tonight. He's certainly an athlete, but it's very disappointing he couldn't stick at 3b (at least for now). Because there's just no way he's going to pass the other OF'ers on this team. We still need 3b depth behind Plouffe. And he was our only option.

@tlschwerz is the JO Berrios scoop machine. Berrios is indeed on his way to AAA. Matter of time until that arm is w/ #MNTwins.

THIS

Because once this bunch is gone, the well is pretty empty for help for awhile again.

Which is nuts, since the Twins have been drafting high in the order.

But the next potential is coming from this year's draft class of athletic OF's and Diaz/Minier/Gordon

Outside of that, there isn't much in the cupboard beside filler.

NO ONE is standing out hitting-wise in A ball.
Some college guys are getting it back together on the mound, among the pitching, but that's about it.

djskillz -> RE: Players and prospects III (6/30/2015 9:25:43 AM)

Yep. It's awful to watch Cedar Rapids or Ft. Myers right now. There's just nothing there hitting-wise outside of Gordon.

At least the pitching has been fine at Cedar Rapids.  Team ERA under 3 (2nd in the league) and lead the league in strikeouts - how often does that happen?

Jorge is developing. That's good news. Still too many college guys there.
