Gonsalves was a high pick last season. As his body matures that heater better pick up mph

---------

LHP Stephen Gonsalves worked 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 9 Ks. Stuff was less impressive. Sat 88-90 early, 85-87 mph later. Loopy slow CB

Twins Jake Reed was very impressive. Was 94-96 mph with a quality slider in his one inning of work. Can't imagine he'll be in ETown long

Reed shouldn't be there to start with.

Reed in CRapids, Louisville stud in FTM.

Advance them out of the gate.

Rookie ball for a 4-year college closer. Stupid.

Twins' Roberts rebounds robustly at plate
After missing most of '13, outfielder collects four hits in third game

After he posted the second highest batting average in Arizona Fall League history in 2012, expectations for Twins outfield prospect Nate Roberts were soaring. Twenty months and two knee surgeries later, the 24-year-old is finally getting the chance to make good on his potential.

In his third game of the season and fourth since the end of 2012, Roberts went 4-for-5 with three doubles, three runs and two RBIs for Class A Advanced Fort Myers in a 12-1 win over Charlotte.

"I had pretty good expectations until I hurt my knee," Roberts said. "It was pretty disappointing. … It hasn't been too much fun."

After hitting .299 with a .433 on-base percentage in 76 games with Class A Beloit in 2012, the 2010 fifth-rounder hit .446 in 19 Arizona Fall League contests, winning the league's batting title with the second-highest average in league history.

With hopes high for a continued breakout in 2013, Roberts hurt his right knee during a preseason workout. He underwent surgery to repair cartilage in the joint, but after rehabbing, he reinjured the knee in his first game back with Fort Myers on May 13, 2013.

He had to undergo a second surgery, this one effectively ending his 2013 campaign. What followed was 13 months of recovery and rehab, including about 30 games in extended spring training this season, before he was able to return to the Fort Myers' lineup on June 19.

"It took me a while since I hadn't played," Roberts said. "I hadn't even run in eight or nine months before I started running a little in February. It took me a while to actually get to playing, get the muscles used to running."

Roberts helped Fort Myers jump to an early lead Monday, ripping a hanging breaking ball to right for an RBI double in the first inning. The hit was his first of the season -- he'd gone 0-for-4 in two games prior to Monday.

"[Blake Snell] had me with two strikes and left a slider up and over the plate," Roberts said. "I got it just past the first baseman [Patrick Leonard] and was able to go two."

He singled in another run in the third on a ground ball up the middle, later scoring on Max Kepler's single. After the Miracle piled up six runs in the third, Roberts led off the fourth with a double and scored on Dalton Hicks' sacrifice fly.

His final double was a one-out shot into center in the fifth -- Roberts and Niko Goodrum were stranded at second and third.

"It's been so long since I've been able to play in a real game and actually feel good with my body," Roberts said. "It's been fun playing baseball again, and to have a game like that, it makes it even more fun."

Mr. Ed -> RE: Players and prospects III (6/26/2014 1:26:34 PM)

Roberts should be moving to AA sooner than later. He's 24 years old.

Ray should be moved there as well to sink/swim. He's 25

talking about mid-season promtion decisions. the whys and why nots

It's a Process

The stats only tell part of the story. Scouting tells us more of it, but still not the entire thing. To understand some of the decisions made, we need to step back and look at the entire picture.

Jose Berrios has been dominant this season in the Florida State League, both on paper and in person. WIth a 2.05 ERA, 10.6 K/9 and 2.3 BB/9, Berrios has had no trouble with High-A ball despite being just 20-years-old. In person, Berrios is even more impressive, with easy mechanics, a plus slider and plus change-up that over-match FSL hitters. It would have been justifiable for the Twins to promote him at the all-star break, as was done with many of the league's best pitchers.

They didn't however, because there's more to the story. Berrios was doing quite well in the Midwest League last year too, but towards the end of the season, he began to wear down. It may have been the rigors of going through a full professional season for the first time, hitting a wall that many young pitchers hit their first time through. It could have been because his size, at just 6'0" 185 lbs., doesn't hold up well to the innings needed to be a starting pitcher. There's no way to know why for sure, but he lost velocity towards the end of the 2013 season.

Not having this happen again is one of the final barriers that Berrios needs to overcome to join the discussion of the game's elite pitching prospects. Scouts in hand will be able to tell if his velocity drops, but by keeping him in the FSL, we have a constant level of competition against which we can compare his first and second half performances. Had he been promoted, it would have been easy to justify any struggles in Double-A, perhaps making the fact that his stuff dropped off at the end of the year again.

With a young player like Berrios, there is simply no rush. He's young and still has a few things (albeit very minor things) to figure out, and can afford to spend an entire year at every level and progress naturally.

djskillz -> RE: Players and prospects III (6/28/2014 9:33:14 PM)

That's a bit of a concern for me with May. He's a really muscled up guy, which isn't always a good thing. Seems to me more strains and pulls with those sometimes. Honestly a bit of a problem in all of baseball IMO. Guys seem to be working just "weights" more than they need to be doing flexibility training, etc.

(Mark would be proud of the above rant I think?)

Travis Harrison transitions to left field for Miracle

Travis Harrison has been playing baseball not quite every day since he was 4 years old.

"I love baseball," Harrison said. "I've never stopped playing. I would play baseball every day of my life if I could."

Harrison, 21 and the starting left fielder for the Fort Myers Miracle, has put his love for the game to good use.

In 71 games with the Miracle, Harrison is hitting .273 (69-for-253) with just one home run but a team-leading 20 doubles. He also has 33 RBI and had stolen five bases in nine attempts.

"He plays the game hard," Miracle manager Doug Mientkiewicz said. "Effort's always there.

"He's learning how to play left field. We're still trying to work him in at third base. We'd still like to see him drive the ball occasionally. He's always gives us a good at-bat, for the most part. He's a team-first guy, which is huge."

The Twins made Harrison the 50th overall pick in the 2011 draft out of Tustin (Calif.) High School. Harrison said he took some pride in being a first-round draft pick.

"That was one of best days of my life," said Harrison, who was in Arlington, Texas, just one day prior, talking to the Texas Rangers. "It was a fun day. To be honest, I didn't think I was going to the Twins. At all. It was an exciting moment, it really was. The Twins, they didn't talk to me that much. But they came to watch me play."

Harrison played outfield and third base in high school and played third for his first year of pro ball in 2012 with Elizabethton (Tenn.) and again in 2013 with low Class A Cedar Rapids (Iowa).

This season, the Twins wanted Harrison to switch to left field.

"It's a lot easier than doing it the other way around," Harrison said of the position switch. "I'm still learning. There's always things you can be learning. But I'm starting to get better out there.

"I played outfield in high school, and I played a little at third. I was terrible my first year. I was a lot better in Cedar Rapids. I feel like if they need me to play third base someday in Minnesota, I'll be able to do that. But I'm liking the outfield, and versatility can only be good for me."

This season, Harrison put together a 14-game hitting streak. Last season, he hit .253 (114-for-450) with 28 doubles, 15 homers and 59 RBI.

"The first couple of weeks, I was just getting acclimated to the league and trying to get comfortable," Harrison said of this season. "And then I started playing really well. Hopefully I can continue that for the rest of the year."

Miracle center fielder Max Kepler said Harrison brings consistency to the lineup.

"He's a great teammate," Kepler said. "He's a tremendous hustler. He always hits the ball hard and puts it in play. The pitchers are going to be expecting a battle."

Mientkiewicz said as the season has moved on, those battles increasingly have been in Harrison's favor.

"His two-strike hitting has improved probably more than anybody else on this team all year," Mientkiewicz said. "It's the biggest improvement, improvement-wise, of anybody on our team. He has definitely come a long way hitting with two strikes."

Being a high draft pick meant Harrison had to turn down his scholarship offer to USC. The Twins gave Harrison a $1 million signing bonus. With it, he brought his mother a Lexus and himself a 2012 Ford Mustang and a Fort Myers condominium.

"It was my dream ever since I realized it was attainable for me," Harrison said, not of the money, but of the first-round draft status. "Playing in high school, I had played with a lot of good players. My sophomore year, I realized it was possible. It became my dream to be a first-round pick."

Berrios managed to limit it to 1K per inning. He's headed in the right direction.

Seeing Kepler quoted prompted me to check his stats. The lad seems to be struggling with high A ball. Is this just the adjustment period or is he an aspiring BJ Garbe?

He'd have to have been drafted #1 to be in Garbe's comparison.

Kepler has talent, still a work in progress.
